.5% of US gun owners would be the worlds largest armed insurgency.

TN should pass a law prohibiting unmarked cars from doing traffic enforcement... It's too big of a safety risk for the public to be pulled over by unmarked cars.... And the reality is that marked cars doing traffic enforcement have a better effect on road safety than unmarked cars. The only reason cities want to use unmarked cars is for revenue, NOT road safety, it's time we place the safety of our wives and daughters above revenue in this state.

We don't need to spend more tax dollars... parents and other law abiding citizens could pick up the slack... I outlined one such idea here: http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/topic/56243-column-gun-free-zones-provide-false-sense-of-security/#entry861296

Where are all of the pro- gun voices?
JayC replied to superduty's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I've been taking a different tac... I ask them to see what even one of those police officers are carrying everyday, Glock's and AR's... They are some of the best firearms on the planet to protect yourself from a threat, so why should we have the same ability to protect ourselves as the police have? So far so good. -

I don't much care if the NRA or GOA is speaking out in public as long as they're running rough shot over any Republicans in the House who even think about supporting gun control.... It's very unlikely that the Senate can get 60 votes for gun control, but the real firewall is the house... We just have to remind representative that if they pass gun control, and there is a government left in 2014 they will be out of a job for life. -
Who cares... I'm not a threat to anybody who isn't out to cause me harm... Maybe if they notice more of their neighbors carrying they'll realize it's not so scary.

Column: Gun-free zones provide false sense of security
JayC replied to xRUSTYx's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I disagree... Having parents and locals volunteer to protect children isn't a police state at all, it's called being good neighbors... By making the positions volunteer you remove the profit motive, since they're not out arresting people, they're only providing security they don't have a negative impact on society but a positive one. Not only that, but you can toss in come CERT and other training so you now have extra adults on hand to help deal with tornadoes and earthquakes... There are very few downsides to using volunteer officers and deputies to help safe guard the community... Here is the major problem with your thought process on mental illness... how do you screen out 100% of these guys without creating a police state? How do you prevent 100% of them from getting a gun, or a knife, or a bomb and attacking a school? You can't... The only way to stop the ones which slip through the cracks is by having armed adults on site to respond and stop the threat. There is no substitute for an armed citizen in this situation. -
Column: Gun-free zones provide false sense of security

We don't need tax dollars at all... Why doesn't every police department have a reserve officer program to provide volunteers to each school for extra security? It's not because it would cost too much money that is for sure. I'm sure if you asked HCP holders and parents to volunteer to provide one volunteer Reserve Deputy/Officer as security for each 250 students, you'd have enough qualified people to provide that security in every county in this state. And the cost to tax payers virtually nothing... a little bit of paperwork/computer time/desk space to run the program (also by volunteers)... The cost of a single officer part time to run the Reserve POST training program for the department... again, this could be ran by volunteers in most situations. Then instead of having a single 'resource' officer per school, you'd have enough parents and volunteers to provide security not only for the school itself, but all field trips and school activities. These reserve officers don't need uniforms (plain clothes would be best), can provide their own firearms (requiring a standard 40 cal or 9mm to conform to department standards might reduce the # of volunteers but not enough to matter), and you could even ask them to shoulder the cost of badges, and ID card - maybe even ask them to cover the cost of the POST reserve training. How many here who are retired, are a business owner, or otherwise have a flexible schedule would volunteer for such a program one day a week even if you had to buy a department approved weapon, and cover the cost of POST reserve training (say $250-300 per student)? This solution would be very cost effective, and provide better safety than paying for armed security guards in every school. All without raising taxes. -
This isn't 1994, some in the population will see this as a violation of our 2nd Amendment rights, and more death will result from an AWB being passed. Many can barely stand what is going on today, any move to disarm otherwise law abiding citizens will be seen as a move too far by the federal government. Most on this forum think TN's relatively relaxed firearm laws are a violation on our God given rights already. There is a reason why almost every police department in this country uses these types of firearms, they are an effective tool in protecting the officers, that therefore means they are a valuable tool for citizens protecting themselves, as such any ban on new (let alone a ban on current owned) firearms, magazines, or ammo would be a clear violation of our God given freedoms, and would remove the legitimacy of any government passing or enforcing those laws. If our government breaks the social contract, then freemen (and women) are no longer bound by that social contract to allow tyrants to stay in power, any force is then reasonable to remove said tyrants from power.

Explain to me how the last 3 major shootings, movie theater, mall, and school were all three gun free zones? You think it's 3 separate evil nutters just happened to randomly select 3 targets that were all gun free zones? No offense but you're nuts if you think the soft targets aren't partly soft because we disarm all the law abiding citizens in them. These people rarely pick a gun store, or a police station to go shoot up... wonder why?
-
I'm sorry but I disagree... The root of the problem is we as a society create gun free zones... and smart people who should know better continue to place themselves and their loved ones in these gun free zones... Which seem to be the only place where evil nutters like this one show up and start shooting people. Israel had a terrible attack on their schools in 1974 called the Ma'alot massacre, after that they made it policy to arm all of their teachers at all times... There is a picture of a school teacher with an M1 carbine on page 3 of this thread. That was a very successful choice, because no schools were successfully attacked in Israel until March of 2008... when a school was attacked and 8 people lost their lives. In that attack, the terrorist had a fully automatic AKM with between 500 and 600 rounds of ammo. He was stopped in minutes by a part time student (who was allowed to be armed) and a Captain in the IDF. If it had not been for a part time student the death toll would have been much greater, Yitzhak Dadon was a hero that day. The problem is not allowing otherwise law abiding citizens from being armed, and in the case of teachers giving them the responsibility and capability to protect those in their charge.

Of course you do Dave :) What a shock... :surrender: I'm not going to go unarmed anywhere... if that scares some sheeple then so be it. Better they be scared than me be without a firearm when I need it.

Just a quick heads up, it appears while he did have a .223 Bushmaster he never entered the school with it... It was found locked in the truck of his car, and seems not to have been fired at the school. Seems the media isn't highlighting this little fact. So, just keep that in mind when you hear calls to ban 'assault weapons' one wasn't even used in this crime.
-
I wouldn't pass judgement... my wife owns 2 out of three (and owns a lot more than 3 firearms total) of those guns, and she bought them herself, including an Armalite AR. Times are changing it's not uncommon to see more and more women purchasing AR's and other firearms for self defense.
-
We don't need a 'special' class for teachers, any law abiding adult should be allowed to carry while on public school property (if private schools wish to post that is their business).
-
And many won't, some might even see such a law as the last straw... banning guns will result in a lot more deaths than was seen in CT today.
-
Please tell me you're joking? Schools are already too much like a prison, we should be getting rid of government ran schools, not turning them into prison camps.

carry on property owned by a university

According to the Attorney General, the site doesn't have to be posted, you just need to know... yes the law is really that crazy. -

Monkey, the issue is bad laws which aren't enforced are the worse kind of laws to have on the books. They allow for selective enforcement... More importantly, they don't have to charge you, they only have to write a letter to TDOS and have your permit revoked for life. And while elected officials like the DA or a judge might bend to public pressure, some nameless administrative "judge" working for TDOS doesn't care about any of that. Also, it's a HUGE risk, we're not talking about a slap on the wrist if they do charge you, we're talking about a felony conviction, or losing your permit for the rest of your life. Not something I personally would want to be the test case for. A much simpler solution, is to just deny access to school groups, or refuse to be a member of a range if they allow school groups to use the range... When schools can't get access to ranges, they'll help push for more sanity in the gun laws. -

Why should an otherwise law abiding citizen be disarmed when they visit a college campus? Somehow across the street they're perfectly sane and safe, yet stepping one foot on a campus suddenly turns them into a crazy madman? The issue is our gun laws in TN are bad, and they all need to go... but I agree this one, 39-17-1351t, and the fact that 39-17-1308 doesn't say exception instead of defense are 3 of the worse laws on the books today. -
Banning private sales in 35+ states would cause a large uproar... ATF is in the crosshairs already.. the last thing they want to do is push more gun regulation... I've heard Senators openly talking about doing away with it altogether... And parts of the NFA may be struck down in the coming years by SCOTUS. You have 5 states which have passed a law allowing commercial sales between state residents, you think they're going to roll over and agree to FFL only transfers? I seriously doubt it.

carry on property owned by a university
JayC replied to me04070's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Monkey good catch, my bad I didn't completely read the post I was replying to... Yes I agree, if a school (including colleges) is there doing a school sanctioned event the place is a no carry or handle firearms zone. The current law is written very poorly and we've discussed this before... the way the law is written if a college club walks into a restaurant while on a school activity, the owner and any armed patrons are in violation of the law. If a school bus stops at McDonald's on the way back from a game and the kids get out to eat, it's a no carry zone while they're on site. Yet another reason to repeal or remove certain parts of that silly law. -

School sanctioned shooting events/clubs are one of the few exceptions to the school no carry law. -
carry on property owned by a university
JayC replied to me04070's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
IANAL but you're dancing with fire... If the school (and in TN schools include virtually ever college and university), owns, leases, or operates the property/grounds/building/room that you're in, it's a violation under TN law to carry there with very few exceptions (and HCP isn't one of them). If the streets are public, then they are not covered under 39-17-1359 or the law that prohibits carry on school grounds... neither would the sidewalks of those public streets... but I'd be very careful to verify the streets are public... and not owned by the school through some crazy deal with the county or state.
