I do not know how you can tell the age of it. You have to manually rack the bolt for shorts. Mine has the same words on the barrel. Sounds like a Savage 6A. The hole in the front is locks the bolt so you can use shorts and longs. They call it the click clack gun because of the sound it makes. The next time you shoot it pull the trigger and hold it the trigger, the bolt should stay open until you release the trigger.

They are a great gun I love mine. I mainly use the federal 550 bulk pack and I have not any problems with the 15/22. It is a little lighter than a AR/15.
