Nice job Brian But lord, I cannot stand the VPC's blathering. Their new meme is "weapons of war" Who made them the arbiter of what people "need"?

Driving by on 65 and saw an ambulance at the nashville armory. I hope everything is ok and it's just someone passing out when they found they couldn't find an Ar-15 in stock.

The fact that no such data exist proved our point. And regarding your prior comment: " I can show you statistics, for example, that show the states with the highest gun ownership also have the highest violent crime rates." You realize that correlation does not equal causality. And this statement is looking at aggregate numbers not rates which would adjust for population differences. Based on this statement I like say that sttez with the highest auto ownership have the highest violent crime too. The problem is not with the data, it's the abuse of interpreting it. Most people don't have a stat background and those who wish to spin data know that.

The signs been there for a while but they just opened today Locked and Loaded at the intersection of TN25 and US231. Next to the army/navy surplus store that's been there forever. They actually had a couple of AR's, lowers and mags. I'm sure they won't last long. PS: I told the owner to contact David to get a sponsorship

Brian - You say you don't want to get into a statistics debate. I would suggest that if you published some of the credible statistics it would be the best thing in terms of informing your readership. It would be nice to see Logos in addition to Pathos in a newspaper story. I think you're doing a fine job in exploring the issues and I can only hope you choose to publish as many facts as possible in addition to opinions. PS: please post the link to the story here once it goes live

NY Times - Nashville Based Mommy Blogger On Guns
Hershmeister replied to R_Bert's topic in General Chat
Another meme to demonize gun ownership. The question "do You have guns in the home?" is the wrong one. The better question is "if you have guns are they properly secured so that children cannot get into them?" This question is non- judgmental and addresses the big issue - are you a responsible gunowner? If you're a hoplophobe it also answers your fear without ruining a friendship -
Brian - it just occurred to me that you places the NRA on the same footing as the vpc. That's not reasonable - the VPC is a small group funded by George Soroa and the NRA is a 4 million + member organization which supports safe responsible firearms ownership. These two "sides" are no where close, and that's the problem with the two sides type of reporting. Just imagine an article which discussed the nra'a position and support of gun safety education and such. Most people might be shocked to learn this. But it's always got I be the story of thenNRA wants everyone to own rocket launchers and the Vpc or maig wants to find a "reasonable" compromise. And it's just a dishonest argument.
We have tried going to the admin just get voicemail with no return call. They have not disputed that they owed the refund, just giving us the runaround over actually issuing it. Tried calling the insurance company and they basically said that was between us and the provider.
Send a polite but firm letter (certified return receipt) to the head cheese and explaining the facts (be brief) and what outcome you would like to happen and by when. Let them know how this has dragged on for whatever period of time has and that that failure for them to resolve the issue in the time You set forth or to contact you to Discuss an amicable solution will result in you having to pursue legal remedies. Express how you hate to have this issue when you should be enjoying the thrill of your new child - and buying diapers!

Brian - I'm just using the NRA as a convenience. Any thinking person evaluating the VPC's claims will see through their misrepresentions. (as I did in my prior post) All I ask is you not serve as a parrot for their specious claims And as for violent crime, my argument would be for someone to prove their us an issue with "assault rifles" in terms of crime vs me having to prove a negative The FBI crime stats show that "rifles" are used in less than 3-5% of violent crimes (can't recall exact #). Evil AR-15s are a subset of that. So the proof is clear that ar's are not a meaningful issue when it comes to violent crime Did the sandy hook shooting shock the senses? Of course. But its a meaningless data blip in terms of statistics that would suggest that "assault weapons" are a problem in this country

FYI: my favorite is their published paper on "Concealed Carry Killers". Which claims 485 CCW holders who killed someone - including suicides- or justified defense shootings which they conveniently fail to mention on their press release. Their research method also fails to include justified shootings where the CCW holder was not charged with a crime. their research consists entirely of newspaper clippings. http://www.vpc.org/fact_sht/ccwprivatecitizens.pdf My favorite listing has to be the one on page 27 of the PDF - "Emanuel Rivera" who was a CCW holder and drug dealer allegedly shot and killed Lekeefe Lee as the result of a drug deal gone bad. So the man is allegedly a felon who is not legally allowed to possess a firearm. Yet someone the VPC can use this to say CCW is a bad thing. Are their hotheads who made really bad and deadly choices? Yes but their numbers are so small as to be statistically irrelevant.

The VPC aggregates gun shootings/deaths and draws conclusions without any consideration of the portion of those numbers which are criminal on criminal shootings. Clearly that subset is a much larger and different issue than your "random spree killer" or suicide or crime of passion shooting. Yet the VPC lumps them all together and draws their usual conclusion that more guns = more shootings. An overly simplistic conclusion. Based on that logic we could conclude that more cars = more auto accident deaths. The volume of a thing has nothing to do with the rate or percent chance of a thing occurring. The FBI crime stats back up the notion that violent Crime is down during a period where the AWB was repealed and gun ownership has risen. Just google NRA VPC and you will see the counter arguments. Or google VPC debunked for other sources. Don't beleive me / do your homework and you'll see how they consistently misrepresent stats to drive their agenda
May I ask who you are going to for the other side of the issue? I haven't figured out everyone I'm going to speak to yet, I'm still researching. But I'll likely reach out to Mayors Against Illegal Guns or someone like the Violence Policy Center. Perhaps local politicians, if I can find some who are vocal about the issue (either for or against). I'll also be speaking to John at TFA for balance to the policy wonks on the other side.
Brian - ill ask that you do something rarely done in your industry - and that is to not automatically grant authority to people who simply lie and mistate facts. MAIG and the VPC both are well known to misrepresent information in significant ways. Feel free to talk with them but I BEG of you to at least publish actual facts and not just make it a "two sides if the argument" type of story. Sadly much "reporting" now is simply regurgitation of taking points from partisan sources. While finding impartial sources is challenging for any topic, that is your job. What would Woodward and Bernstein looked like if they just wrote an article talking about what nixon said and why unnamed aources said and they left it at that? I applaud you for coming on here to perform research, and folks have given you quite a lot of facts to work with. I'd encourage you strongly to source some quotes from the Heller and McDonald cases. I'm sure John can help you. You would be performing the duty of the media. Please - thanks for your consideration.

I strongly suspect this panic buying will continue. Right now I'm just beginning to hear the news on the radio and regular non-gun enthusiasts are just being exposed to this. Once the retailers begin to be resupplied there will be additional buying due to pent up demand from folks who don't buy at the current prices - this in turn will continue to keep retailers stocked out of many items until the market demand is satisfied. Political and media rhetoric will determine how long this goes on but i for one think it's going to be a long rocky ride
-
Excellent post. High prices in a shortage situation ensure that the available supply is there for the person most in need ( assuming they have the $$ I'd course) Keeping prices low just encourages hoarding as the market "knows" there is High demand and low supply. Thereby moving the supply from the retail channel to the secondary market at the higher price it should have been at in the first place

Have you had any backlash because you are a gunner?
Hershmeister replied to a topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
My interesting convos with libtards wind up having them say that "well you're a responsible gun owner so I'm ok with you having a high cap mag but not the "other guy" I then ask them who gave them the power to decide Silence usually follows -
