Wow! I've never seen a tire fail like that during street riding. Generally, a delamination like that only happens on the race track at high temperatures. I can't see the brand of tire in those pics, do you mind sharing? I run Bridgestone or Michelin for the most part, but have Dunlops on my HD. I'd send photos to the tire manufacturer. I'm betting they'd like to have that tire for analysis, and might provide you with a new one. A couple of questions: Did you check tire pressure before your ride? How much pressure were you running? Was the rim damaged? How old was the tire? (manufacture date?) It looks like it had plenty of tread life remaining. Finally, what was the approximate air temperature? Nice job of not crashing! I've had tires go flat, and it's a handful, but never had one throw a huge chunk of tread like that. It sure looks like a defective tire, assuming that the pressure was good.

school shooting in Nashville at the Covenant School

I'm confused by this statement. I just looked at the vote totals and they were 72-25, 69-26, and 65-30. I understand that Ms. Johnson avoided removal by only one vote, but 72 voted to remove Mr. Jones and only 65 to remove Ms. Johnson. Still, it's hard to attribute the difference to racism in the absence of further information. Perhaps it was reverse-misogyny, perhaps it was that Ms. Johnson's action was seen as less egregious, or maybe she was just better liked. No matter the reason, it IS a terrible optic, though. And that admonition about avoiding the appearance for impropriety probably comes from the Bible verse, My mother used to this one on me when I tried to wriggle out of something. 1 Thessalonians 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil. -
Costco can have some pretty good deals IF you can find what you want. I don't think I've ever seen bedroom furniture there, but we bought a nice couch, loveseat, and recliner there a couple years ago.

I did the Jungle Environment Survival Training (JEST) in the Philippines. The aboriginal instructors made fire in minutes using a split length of bamboo. I managed to bloody my hands trying.

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/04/opinion/nashville-shooting-guns This is worth a read, I think, as it gives us an idea of what the anti-gun crowd are thinking. The comments section makes me nuts, but what else can one expect from NYT readers? (I must admit, though, that I read it, too.)

Will you fire the first mag through it?

Here's mine. I can see no way that damage could occur during normal use. Maybe the gun was dropped and just happened to land against the frame? Who knows? .

My brother sent me this photo without any information. It looks to me like some kind of outside mechanical force did the damage here. I can't think of a mechanism where this would happen during shooting, even with overly heavy loads. Interesting though... I have the same model Kimber and it seems to be well built.

school shooting in Nashville at the Covenant School
Darrell replied to FUJIMO's topic in General Chat
Legally, they are adults, not children. And I believe that JayC's point point was that most of those deaths are the result of gang violence and other criminal activity. I don't think it's at all reasonable to include those deaths when speaking of children killed by firearms. Do you? -

That's stomach churning. Interesting, too, how early reports had this animal entering through an unlocked door. -
He probably should have stopped after one double-tap.

Hey LS, maybe it's time to take a deep breath and make a fresh start. I'm still a newbie as compared to most of these guys, but those I've dealt with have been honest and helpful. This isn't a "club", it's a forum of folks who share a common interest. There are a lot of divergent ideas about politics and religion, so we try to keep the conversation on firearms related topics. It's really easy to have miscommunication when dealing with terse written responses, and my guess is that you'd probably find that you like and have much in common with most of us. Good luck.

There's a book available called "Bluebook of Gun Values". It might be worth buying the latest edition in order to get a ballpark idea of the gun values. There are auction sites, too, which seem to yield top-dollar for guns that sell. But there is an attendant hassle that goes with using that route. KahrMan is on the money, too.

Biden to sign executive order to expand background checks
Darrell replied to Darrell's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
What that generally means is that private sales must be conducted through an FFL with a required background check. -
I've never attended either, but it might be worth an hour's drive. I'm tempted!

This from a Fox News story this morning. It looks to me like it outlaws an already illegal activity, but what do I know? President Biden is expected to announce an executive order on Tuesday that would expand background checks to more firearm sales by expanding the statutory definition of a firearms dealer, the White House said. Biden is set to sign the order during a trip to Monterey Park, California, where he will meet with families and the community impacted by the mass shooting that killed 11 and injured nine others in January. The White House said the executive order will bring the U.S. "as close to universal background checks as possible" without additional legislation. BIDEN VOWS TO BAN ASSAULT WEAPONS 'COME HELL OR HIGH WATER' Under the executive order, Biden is also directing Attorney General Merrick Garland to develop and implement a plan to prevent former federally licensed firearms dealers, whose licenses have been revoked or surrendered, from continuing to engage in the business of dealing in firearms.

One of the guys who used to work for me turned around on an on-ramp in his car when traffic wasn't moving. A motorcyclist was coming the right way, but on the shoulder, up the on-ramp. They collided head-on at fairly low speed, and the biker was deader than a doornail. Somehow the guy that was in the car didn't go to jail, but I never figured that out. Something about both being at fault, which is true, but the biker paid with his life.

Approaching?!? Socialism has been here for a long time, my friend. Our country is chock full of social programs from great to small. An interesting read is Ronald Pestritto's "America Transformed".

TN legislature is considering two new proposals: One, HB0042/SB1450 , will allow motorcyclists to ride without helmets, with some exceptions. The other, SB0298/HB1454, will allow lane splitting (or filtering). I first started riding on the street in California in the early 70's, where helmets were not required and lane-splitting was legal. I'm old now, and more cautious, and I personally would not ride on the street without a helmet, but I think that those who want to should be allowed. I REALLY like the idea of legal lane-splitting, which makes a lot of sense to me. I think the main opposition to lane splitting is that some people hate to see motorcyclists get to move a little more freely. If you ride, check out the proposals.

Do you still trust Sean Hannity, Tucker Carlson and Laura Ingraham
Darrell replied to Links2k's topic in General Chat
I miss David Brinkley. I watched him "News Hour" for years and years before I finally discovered that he was a conservative. CNN and MSNBC don't even try to hide that they're shilling for the left. Fox shills for the right. I try to read a wide variety of news sources, (though I just can't get through an MSNBC article) but I still have trouble sorting out what's true and not. It's rare these days to read a hard news piece that doesn't have some opinion tossed into it. "Reporters" or more accurately, producers, cherry pick the statistics and quotes that they use to advance their narratives. "Gotcha" politics prevails, and when a politician can't give his honest opinion for fear of having it twisted to fit an opposing agenda then we know that the media doesn't serve us at all. I spent 24 years as a volunteer firefighter and I never read a story that had all the facts straight on any of the incidents I attended. And that was a small, local news outlet covering local events. I can't imagine how a huge organization based in New York can hope to get it right about anything at all. -
Warning-Graphic Picture of my Stupidity
Darrell replied to Defender's topic in Knives, Lights, EDC Gear
yes, and I've been carrying it for the past couple of weeks. It's a lot lighter than most of my knives, but it seems to be solid and is what I expected. -
The sniff test is the best way to tell. I've had some cans of powder for many years with no noticeable degradation. If smells good and looks good, and if the caps are not discolored or damaged, then the powder is probably good. If it were me, I'd probably dispose of any cans that are nearly empty anyway, and I'd load low-pressure loads with the powder I kept. Keep track of your loads and pay attention when you shoot.

Kits are readily available. This one is inexpensive: https://www.amazon.com/Motorcycle-Wrench-5-0‑6-8mm-Caliber-Motorbike/dp/B0BGHBY7GB/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=spoke+torque+wrench&qid=1677847763&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzRjc5RlNURktPRDZEJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwODAyNDM2MVdDUTRXVFhIMDExRyZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNDg0OTU5MjUzOTc5NEhOVDE3ViZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU= Depending upon how you ride, you'll need to adjust your spokes more or less frequently. Generally, I go through the spokes on my trials bike twice a year, but those wheels take a beating. I have a spoked wheel on the front of my Harley, and I check alignment whenever I change a tire. I've never had to adjust it. You'll need something like a balance stand for checking runout, and a good dial indicator that can be mounted to the stand. YouTube can be your friend.

Problem with my Marlin 336 .35 Remington
Darrell replied to Old StarPacker's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
I've had a similar problem with a Model 70 that I've owned since new. As Photoguy67 suggested, the problem was a gummed-up firing pin caused by old lube inside the bolt. But one would think that your rifle, having twice been to gunsmiths, would be clean and free. With the bolt out does the firing pin protrude through the bolt face properly when pushed all the way forward? Is the tip of the firing pin smooth and intact? Do you have a means to check head space?
