I love this. But I just bought two new pistols last week. @Gurn might be fun except for the tennis elbow from pulling the handle on the turret press.

Blue Alert issued after one Maryville officer killed, another injured
papa61 replied to Kano's topic in General Chat
THIS!!! If my phone goes off with some alert every night from halfway across the state, I tend to ignore what might be pertinent to myself. When you get endangered child alerts for 17 year old runaways it kind of makes it unimportant. Chicken Little comes to mind. -

I feel pretty good for a 84 year old man. Problem is I'm only 62. That said, I have had issues with STM for a few years now, sometimes forget my password when logging back in after lunch. Asked my doctor about it and he was not concerned, told me everyone experiences this as they age. That doesn't comfort me at all. I have enough meds and am working hard at lowering what I have to take. I did read a study recently that showed that using certain scents in the bedroom at night helps with STML. I have respiratory issues that won't allow me to do that but I'm sure you could find the study. There are specific scents and what I got out of it was to rotate them. Good Luck and as others have said, remain as active as possible.

How do I soften a hard leather holster ?
papa61 replied to tercel89's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
Saddle soap then neatsfoot oil. lots of patience and no more heat, that's how we make them hard. Use enough water with the saddle soap to allow it to soak in. Then seal it in a ziplock and allow it to soak in. Once it's softened you can use beeswax to help maintain the oil level. It's hide, just like your skin, moisture is good. There are also cream type conditioners that work well, I don't have a recommendation there but any good leather conditioner will help. It's like losing weight, didn't get fat overnight, won't get skinny overnight. -

My Pa had a well pumped into the house to bathe and wash dishes. Couldn't drink it but I never knew why. Had to draw a bucket from the hand dug well out front. I tell you that was the sweetest coldest water ever. Oddly, they never had a toilet and he had the worst outhouse EVER! Dad grew up in Red Boiling Springs where they have seven distinctly different Sulphur waters. Used to be a resort town with the different "flavors" touted to have assorted healing powers. Dad LIKED Sulphur water and stopped at one of the hand pumps down in the park area to fill a jar. He had to have a drink and that was a really sour ride home. -

What kind of holster for working outside?
papa61 replied to Darrell's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I have several holsters in process for my own use. Bought a new pattern for a shoulder rig but have yet to cut the leather. I too prefer belt carry but I have some heavier pistols that cause me to act like an overweight deputy in an old comedy. I quit with IWB when our fine legislators passed the no permit carry, not too worried about who sees what anymore. I have read that people either swear by or at shoulder rigs so we shall see which side I land on. Working especially outside lends well to chest carry, I used a GI tankers holster in the service and found it quite handy for keeping a 1911 accessible and still out of the way when climbing in and out of hatches and working in the field. -
Very nice!

I don't always carry when going back and forth to shop or garage but if I'm going to be there for a bit I usually have my 32 in a pocket holster. Have about 3 acres here and I always have it when out working or mowing. Figure 8 rounds will get me to the house. -
Thoughts on the recent Hybrid / EV registration penalty?
papa61 replied to Erich's topic in General Chat
I'm a hard no on pure EV. I know Toyota has said they are close on solid state batteries that would solve many of the issues of electric vehicles. I just refuse to sign on to moving the pollution and oil dependance around so that it appears we are making progress. I totally agree with getting @gov out of the picture though. It takes time and miles to lower the carbon footprint of an EV to below that of ICE. Most EVs are being traded before that equalization. If I recall correctly, two years by the average American driver. Therefore, EVs are greater pollutants at this time than EVs. Meaning the extra energy required to build EV is higher than that of an ICE. This is all before the used up batteries are factored in. This doesn't factor in where we would get the power needed to charge all of them. A hybrid with the modern ICE efficiencies you mention overcomes these issues. -

I would look for a hunting style chest rig with a flap. would work equally well with shorts or over a shirt under the bib. What do you typically carry when working your place? -

maybe tax by the pound since heavier vehicles put more stress on the pavement. I like hybrid vehicles, I think they are the long term solution to pollution and oil. But I do not agree with giving any vehicle lane priority or tax breaks. Maybe our state needs to tax all of the freight hubs rather than giving them tax incentives. They will build where it is most convenient for their interests. Bribing companies to locate in our state has caused the current road/traffic issues, not hybrids an EVs. nope, I am not progressive. -
I don't do that either, me and wood do not get along. I just go to Home Depot and buy them or pick something up from marketplace/craigslist. I mean, I measure 3 times and use a square and still can't make a 90 deg corner. If I went to a barn raising I'd have to cook.

Damn, average Tennessean only getting 24 MPG? Guess I need to drive my truck more to fill those potholes since 120 miles per day at 30 MPG isn't paying my fair share. I didn't know they were hitting them so hard. Consider this, the average EV owner has higher income level and this tax will not sting them as badly as the working class commuters who drive hybrids by necessity.
