The Russians would just coat their guns in Cosmoline, which is just an oily substance. That will prevent rust.

I've had this hand gun for several years now, and it is a great piece! I've shot just about every type of casing though it and it just loves it! it does stove top on Winchester ammo tho. I'd buy it again!
