Ok, so I finally got my Marlin 1894 in 44 Mag after waiting 70+ days. When it finally arrived, the stock was cracked and one of the tenons that interface with the receiver was broken off. If that happened before it was shipped (would not surprise me) or if it happened during shipping, the seller is basically non-responsive, so it is what it is. I was able to repair the cracked stock my injecting wood glue into the crack and clamping. I was able to glue the tenon back on as well. I then removed the poly finish someone added (it was even coating the butt-plate, unless that was the norm for Marlin in 1976) and went back with a hand-rubbed Danish oil finish. I really, really like a hand rubbed oil finish on walnut, as opposed to a poly finish. I may add a cross-bolt through the hand-grip part of the stock to strengthen the repair. I just need to figure out the pieces I want to use. I have put the rifle back together. I hope to shoot it soon, although I may wait until I decide on the cross-bolt addition. Now I need to line all the levers up again for a new family portrait.

In what caliber is it chambered? What is the other Winchester in the photo?

With the cross bolt safety, it should be from ‘83 or later. What are the first two digits of the serial number? Subtract that from 100 and that should be the year of manufacture. 17 = 83, 11= 89, etc.

I was always under the impression (assumption) that an uninsured motorist claim should not affect your rates. We had a similar situation in reverse and we did not want to file a claim (my daughter had recently totaled a car (or 2). We asked them to get a coupe estimates and we would pay the repair facility directly. It worked out in the end. Then my daughter killed another car. I will say, if you can get USAA auto insurance, do it. They are awesome. My wife (through her dad) has been a USAA member for 30 years and while our insurance it high at the moment (teenager and totaled cars) they didn’t kick us to the curb, and our rates are still decent.

I know, I know. I do want this (badly) for my collection of Birth-Year Marlins. I have just spent too much recently.

Ah man, and it’s a ‘69. That is definitely on the list. I’m still dealing with this 44mag and the broken stock. But I will remember this guns location and I will be following the thread.

I think she planned to die all along, either by the hands of the police or her own hand. I attribute the relatively low loss of life (one life is too many in my opinion) to both the efficiency of the MPD and the training and quick actions of the staff to secure the children and remove them as targets. She tried unsuccessfully to shoot her way into two different 3rd grade classrooms, expending I believe well over 100 rounds, in the effort. Only one death occurred after the stairwell shooting and that was Dr. Koonce. Hale was unable to find or target any students once they were locked down. Thankfully, in all her planning and research, she didn’t realize the training that the staff had taken, nor did she know of the other measures the school implemented to secure the students and rooms. The training of the teachers (especially the two third grade teachers) allowed them to very very quickly assess what was happening, and move their students back into the rooms, secure the doors, and prevent additional loss of life. I praise the MPD officers who remained “visible “ outside the school, basically as targets to keep her occupied, which allowed the officers who entered the building to confront her.

So it is a “new” 1873? I do have an 1873 on the list of levers to own. I just think I want one from 1873ish. If there is an “America’s Gun”, it is not an AR-15. It’s a Winchester Model 1873!

I don’t think you can speculate as to why she acted as she did. I will say, as far as I know, her gender identity had nothing to do with this. It’s my understanding that it was only recently that she may have started identifying as “he”, but she had been planning an attack for years.

She did attend TCS and I believe graduated from TCS. That is what likely put TCS on her radar as one potential target.

It’s correct Hale chose the school due to a perceived lack of security and the isolated nature of being on the hill. She had considered two other schools as well as a public location but determined she would have more success at TCS. This is written in her notes which I will address in a sec. While there was not an SRO at the school, measures were already being put in place to have trained and armed staff on site along with the active shooter training they had recently completed. There was not a “Manifesto” as one might think. That was a poor choice of words for the police chief to use. There were 17 notebooks filled with research of every school shooting, logistics of the TCS building, camera locations, employee info, etc. Hale had been monitoring the building for two yrs and compiling info. She was hyper focused on this aspect thus the large amount of data on covenant and on how to successfully conduct a school shooting with maximum deaths. According to police, this was the most planned school attack in US history and they're still processing info. It’s an active investigation that they expect will take another year to complete. It’s true the police don’t want this research and info out there since it will most definitely aid future shootings. As far as the school, church & parents not wanting the “manifesto” released, there are unwell people out there wishing harm towards the school as evidenced by continued letters and calls to the school. It’s unfathomable but the rumors people have created, pushed, and subsequent anger has made an unsafe environment for everyone there. My wife has fielded calls and received letters several times. People have traveled to Nashville to stalk the school. Releasing the notebooks would be equivalent to police releasing schematics and security details of your personal home knowing someone activity wants to hurt your family. Protection of staff and children who are still experiencing trauma from seeing their classmates killed is paramount.
