H&K USP .40 has significantly less recoil than any other .40 I have shot. I am slightly biased though.

Thanks guys that's what I suspected. Same mag both times.

Plausible explanation for ammo shortage
9teeneleven replied to bvarnell's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
At some point, everyone is going to have enough ammo to stop stockpiling. Then, demand will fall, and there will be overstock. -

USP .40. The last bullet in the clip is jamming the slide. This happened twice in about 150 rounds yesterday. Both times it was the last bullet. That may just be a coincidence. My first guess is that the spring in the clip is worn out. This is a very old mag. Any ideas why the last bullet might jam?

Walther P22 is a fun, inexpensive gun to shoot. Edit: Just saw that you want it for defense, so that is not a good option, but these are really fun guns to shoot for little $$.

Any H&K USP shooters been able to find a straight-thumbs grip that works? The safety switch is bulky enough to be murdering the inside of my thumb joint when I do a thumbs over safety grip. The recoil just nails the hard edge of the safety into the joint. Anyone that shoots a USP regularly use a straight-thumbs grip, and if so did you have a similar issue?

If you are into building teles, they had quite a bit of 8/4 basswood when I was there last. I picked up enough for about 6 guitars, and the two I have made out of it were exceptional sounding. It is a really soft wood, so I can dent, but has a nice sound to it.

If you know where the big cemetery is on Chapman, Jefferies is in the industrial complex behind there. They have a good selection of exotic woods (many which I think would be of interest to gun and knife enthusiasts, lots of cocobolo, and rosewoods). Their really nice maple comes in and out pretty fast, but they consistently have some decently figured stuff. They don't have much 6/4 maple for bookmatching as carved guitar tops, but they do have some, and I've found some really nice stuff there. They will resaw too. Prices are very fair, especially compared to getting wood at somewhere like woodcraft.

Severely limiting all political lobbying, forcing politicians to rely on listening to their constituents who make an effort to make their own voices heard on a diversity of issues.

I wouldn't trust the Daily Mail to gauge the country's health. It is the equivalent of the New York Post.

I've never joined because I don't think that a lobbying group no matter what the lobby is for should have as much power as the NRA does based on lobbying for a single issue. The real world is not a single issue place.

I think you are right on the whole, but copper seems to be an exception: Linkage -

I am somewhat uncertain what to do at the moment with regards to buying ammo. I want to have a good supply on hand. At the moment I only have 500 rounds of handgun ammo. I have never shot less than 100 rounds on a trip to the range. However, I don't want to contribute to the buying frenzy, but is it actually going to subside? The cost of metals is skyrocketing, so it is not just politics (or the fear of politics) that is driving the cost up. A year from now, will we look back on this and laugh, or look back and wish we had bought more when we had the chance? Hard to answer that one IMO, but I would love to hear a more informed opinion. -
Making the checking on grips
9teeneleven replied to 9teeneleven's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Thanks, looks like I'm gonna check some of these out: http://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/store/catsearch.aspx?c=1449&p=4812 Here is a cool link I found once I knew what tools were used: http://forums.1911forum.com/showthread.php?t=182832 -
A lot of the tools came from stew mac. All the wood is local though, Jeffries in Seymour.

I just finished building this guitar from scratch: I don't play nearly as much as I used to, but do get great pleasure from building them now.

Eh, I like old guns, I am sure there are plenty of people on this forum who would admit to owning an M1. And would like to own a PSL since I am a fan of 7.62x54r. Interesting link: http://www.politico.com/static/PPM116_mike_ross.html

Alcoa= aluminum foil?

I completely agree with you (though, what is the Alcoa bandwagon?). However, it is simply untenable in my mind to let, say, a person convicted of violent crime to legally own a gun. That is what I meant by a right that can be lost. I realize that this is not a position without contradiction or danger. For starters, laws themselves are not a guarantee of a perfect justice system. Additionally, laws which might be broken may be unjust. However, the declaration of independence also argues that there is a time when it is justified to break the laws of an unjust state. You do not revolt against an unjust state without becoming a criminal anyway (Nor am I advocating, just discussing the issue).

I am interested in making some grips. I have a full service woodshop, and know my way around it. I am not a big fan of smooth grips, so my question is about the checking on the grips. Is there a non-machined way to do this? I was hoping maybe someone on here had tried this, or at least knew how it might be done with consistent results.

I'm not too big to come back on here and say I was wrong. I've been thinking about it since this thread started. I made no secret that this is an issue I haven't given much attention to. In fact, gun ownership on the whole is not an issue I had given much serious thought to until the last few years. I was raised in a home without guns, and never shot one until after I was 21. We are often ingrained with ideas without fully considering them. I have had long guns in my home for years, but only in the last few years brought a handgun in. I tend to not think about guns with regard to defense, though do have them available if the need arises. I primarily enjoy shooting, and shooting sports. I still stand by the idea that there are some limits which we should accept on the 2nd amendment, and my previous posts present that argument. However, I was wrong on my original post regarding the "assault weapon" ban. After consideration, I agree that these semi-autos are not justifiably different than any other firearm that we as a society should consider acceptable for civilian ownership and use. Gun ownership should be treated as a right, but not one that is earned. However, I still believe that that right is one you can and should be able to lose. I do acknowledge that this is a slightly problematic position given that unjust laws exist, especially in an unjust government. I can live with this contradiction if it keeps weapons out of the hands of those who would use them to do injustice. However, law abiding citizens should not be treated as potential criminals, and gun laws should not be legislated based on that premise. Thanks for you patience. I would like to stay around this forum, and hope that I didn't make too abrupt of an entrance.

Any truth to his statement about not cleaning the gun for the first few hundred rounds to facilitate break in? As he says, "it seems that a gun that's allowed to get dirty and still forced to function wears in better."

I will admit that the Sound of Music and Streisand are a little suspect . I still consider the PT-1911 a pretty good deal if after a new mag and extractor you are still under $615 (which it looks like you can do) for a new 1911 with some nice features. The stock plastic grips probably need to go too, but I actually like the feel of the thinner grips even though I have big hands.
