  1. that show made me feel dirty.
  2. Eh, I'm out too. This thread had bad juju written all over it from the start for me. I gotta try and steer clear of these political threads, though I will admit that the AW thread got me thinking more seriously about AWs than I had in the past. It just seems I make more enemies that friends any time I get into them. I'm not a troll, I enjoy talking about guns. Must... Resist... Politics...
  3. Since when am I the spokesperson for the left? I have no more love for MSNBC than I do Fox News. Poor writing skills are becoming increasingly pervasive as more "news" is forced to sacrifice quality and context for speed and entertainment value. I just find particular irony in bad grammar in the writing of people who routinely attack higher education.
  4. I like your analogy. However, were you equally up in arms when Bush was openly eroding the separation of powers that is so fundamental to the constitution? I happen to think that stinks on both sides of the aisle these days. There has always been division in politics, but we have perfected it as an art in recent years. Jumping on the bandwagon of divisive rhetoric does little to alleviate that problem. What we should do is hold all leaders accountable on the merits of sound arguments presented so that they may be heard by all persons, even if they choose not to listen. One thing that I have always respected about gun owners is that as a group we are active in making our voices heard to legislators. I am not sure that the same is also true when making the case to those who might disagree. For example, how productive do you think that Coulter article actually is? It reeks of preaching to the choir to me. It is also more likely to divide than to encourage open-mindedness. That is how Coulter makes her hay though, and that is why I have no respect for her, even on the rare day when she might raise a valid point.
  5. There is a clear difference between a published article and a typo on an internet discussion forum.
  6. I don't agree with a lot of his policies, but guess what, he is the democratically elected president of the United States. He can never revoke term limits, or take away your right to vote. Don't like the direction he is taking the country, don't vote for him. To call him anti-American is simply a weak way of trying to engage his positions without actually dealing with them. Democracy requires a constellation of viewpoints on a diverse number of issues, and the freedom to express them and vote upon them. I am no more liberal than you are conservative (in fact, I probably have more traditionally right positions than I do traditionally left). People like Coulter reduce that complexity a democracy requires to the equivalent of college football fandom.
  7. I do think that satire can be effective, and funny. I just find it problematic that we are beginning to rely so heavily on it for our political discourse. In this particular instance, I don't disagree with a lot of what she is saying. What I disagree with is how she makes her message (though more often than not, how she makes her message is her message). That article posted above sets up her classic strawman: the liberal, and does so, largely at the expense of her actual argument.
  8. I have a slight issue with the move to satire as the acceptable form for a large part of our political discourse, right or left. Satire rarely deals with the actual person or issue. Instead, it evades complexity for chariactures. I would say that there is one big difference between Coulter and Stewart; vitriol and hate. Rarely is John Stewart vitriolic, but it is par for the course with Coulter. Regardless of your politics, a passage like, "who told co-workers 'America sucks' yet somehow was not offered a job as a speechwriter for Barack Obama" is not satire, it is a character attack.
  9. Jeez, you guys are quick to judge. I admitted from the get go in that AWban thread that that I was open to discussion, I also admitted that my mind was changed. However, on the topic of Ann Coulter unless she suddenly become more than just a hate spewing demagogue I see little chance of me giving a moments consideration to anything that she has to say, right or wrong. If you like your world in black and white, then continue to cling to terms like liberal and gun-hater. Also, feel free to ignore anything that I have to say, it won't bother me one lick. If you want to make progress on the issues that you care about, consider the possibility that people don't always fit well into the little boxes that people like Ann Coulter try to fit them into.
  10. Well, to attack her message is not hard either. Her logic is rarely better than her grammar. The "message" is full of straw-men and anti-POTUS rhetoric. It is simply divisive hate-mongering poorly dressed as satire. I see not value in anything she has to say, even if I might agree with a point here or there. However, I do lament that a Cornell graduate can't put a comma in the right place, or construct a legible sentence.
  11. I counted three egregious examples of misplaced modifiers in that–not sure what to call it. I've seen third graders with better command of the written word.
  12. You need to buy a PSL to help get rid of some of that ammo!
  13. That is a weird rebuttal. At the end, he does what he is accusing the fox article of. The whole refusal to disclose why these other weapons aren't being traced is highly suspect. If he knows, tell. There is certainly some smelly stuff going on on both sides of this issue. The truth is out there, and we aren't hearing it from anyone at this point.
  14. It was political suicide in 1994. I just don't see it happening again. The will is there, just not the political capital.
  15. Are there restrictions on HB1395, like when it may come into conflict with an existing law? For example, if I am an employee of UT, can I take my shotgun to work if I am going to the range afterward, as long as it is locked in the trunk, or would this be prohibited, since my employer is also a post-secondary institution?
  16. I had similar luck last Sat. morning when I wandered over to the ammo counter after they had put out .40 S&W. $28 for 100. It looked like they only had two boxes, but when I said "I'll take all you have," and three more boxes appeared, I was grinning.
  17. Thanks for the Wolff suggestion. I just bought two new factory H&K mags. I was really excited about the price ($13 each), but a little dismayed when they arrived and I realized they were ban-era 10 round mags. I like the idea of the larger capacity for my primary clip, but also like reliability, even in a range gun. Therefore, I think the $10 for the wolff spring will be money well spent.
  18. Well I've got a nickel to add. The Capitalist system is based on two things that I see neither of anymore. 1) Rationality 2) Competition. What they have been replaced with is 1) Emotion based Consumerism 2) Entitlement, Greed, or Passivity. The point that I think the original poster makes, which is a valuable one is that the system that we are living in is not functioning properly. I see a clear lack of any sense of direction in the majority of our youth. Socialism may not be the answer to that problem, but as a country we are going to have to do something to regain our bearings.
  19. Ok, I signed up.
  20. Well, these finnish rifles are considered matching. Mine has all matching numbers. The Finns just built up the "new" rifles around old receivers, often captured Russian ones, but mostly new old stock receivers, hence the pre 1889 parts on many of them. The Finnish mosins are generally much better, and much more consistent that their russian counterparts. Mine is certainly dead nuts accurate. They generally are more collectable, better made, more accurate, but also cost at least twice what a Russian mosin does. I also much prefer the pistol grip. Sorry if I got this tread a little off track.
  21. I'm pretty sure it is only the receiver on these M39s that is pre 1898, not the whole rifle. Apparently, that is enough to qualify them. Mine is a 1944 with a pre-98 hex receiver. Here is a wiki quote (sorry, I hate to quote wikipedia): "Since it the date of manufacture of the receiver that is relevant to identifying a gun as antique or modern, it is possible to have a weapon with date marks post-1898 but still be considered an antique gun. For example, some Finnish M39 (Ukko-Pekka) Mosin-Nagant rifles with hexagonal profile receivers are considered antique because some were built on receivers dated pre-1899, even though the rifle itself was adopted in 1939. Many of these were assembled using a mix of old round and "hex" receivers from then on, until as late as the 1970s. To be identified as pre-1899, however, Mosin-Nagants that have been re-barreled must be disassembled to see the date stamps on their tangs.[11]. A similar situation exists for 7.65mm Mauser Turkish Model 1893 bolt actions, most of which were re-arsenalized at the Ankara arsenal in the 1940s, and rechambered to 8x57mm Mauser. Despite this re-arsenalization and rechambering, they are still considered antiques under US law."
  22. Really, even if the receivers are pre 1898(??). My understanding is that those don't even require a C&R. My experience with gunsnammo bears that out too. I got this one shipped right to my door with 0 paperwork, just a fax of my drivers license. It is one of my favorite guns.
  23. Sorry, my bad, these are antiques not C&R, so you don't even need a C&R license.
  24. If you are going to go the mosin route, go with a finnish M39. Really nice, and accurate rifles. www.gunsnammo.com has them for $200-300, many of them are C&R so you can have them shipped to your front door.
  25. Ha, I just got done watching Enemy at the Gates.
