  1. Great info Brasil!   JaxJohn...I have extra holsters and mag pouches...mags as well...that you can use if you like.   I have no class...which is well known to my friends...so it's not a concern for me. But I'll require some direction as well.
  2. Definitely come try it out.   I'm certain some very knowledgeable folks here will answer your questions much better than I can.   But I carry a Glock 19, about as factory as they come as far as internals, Trijicon sites and Perkins Modified Grip Reduction and Enhancement Package (How's that for a description? ).   A lot of folks will, I'm certain, utilize holsters and other gear that will enhance their performance. I'll be using my EDC IWB holster and mag pouches...plus a couple of additional magazines. But that's just my preference. Besides, I lack the ability to benefit from the match purpose gear.   As far as ammo? By looking at the stages from the ORSA Facebook page it should be around 120 rounds. But since I plan on missing...probably a lot...I plan to bring 300 rounds. LOL.   There's an update at the ORSA Facebook page addressing member and non-member match fees. Very timely.     Time:  http://orsaap.com/USPSA%20page.htm
  3. No Sir JaxJohn. No membership required.   Come on out and join us.      http://orsaonline.org/faq.asp   http://orsaonline.org/contact.asp
  4. I was hoping to squad together as well since I'm gonna try and get Spiffy and Brasil would be my "lead bearers" . :pleased:     Rocks? I gotta bring rocks? Things have certainly changed since we referred to it as "IPSC" back in the day... :squint:
  5. I'll be shooting my first USPSA Match since the late '90's out at ORSA this coming Saturday. I am really looking forward to it.   My work schedule (every other weekend off) only allows me to shoot matches about 6 months out of the year. I am psyched ti finally have a "Match Weekend" off for this.   I have been shooting IDPA there for a short while (couple of years) and thoroughly enjoy the quality of the stages and the folks I've got to know at ORSA.   Now I will need some remediation LOL, so I'm counting on a little help there guys. :pleased:   I actually linked to the ORSA USPSA Facebook page ...a major step for me since I'm a dyed in wool technotard. The stages are listed there and they look to be fun and challenging!   https://www.facebook.com/pages/ORSA-uspsa/119338841557558   See you folks there.   I'm the "Skinny Col. Sanders" looking old curmudgeon.
  6. My old "standby" powders have been Unique and W-231 for 9mm and 45 acp...for nearly 25 years. But the shortage forced me out of my comfort zone and I discovered American Select from Alliant and absolutely love it for 147 gr lead 9mm. AA#2 is great for my .38's and a little goes a long way...   My favorite primers are Federal and Winchester. But I've had good luck with Wolf magnum small pistol primers for 9mm. I'm not so pleased with the "lead free" Tula primer (small). I relegate them strictly for range/practice...they allow for the occasional malfunction clearance drills and therefore save wear and tear on my orange dummy rounds. LOL.
  7. Welcome aboard "Slim"!     Man...there is absolutely no screening process around here... :ugh:   Just kidding Buddy. Heck...they let Spif and Brasil...and me on here...
  8. I'm a cigarette smoker myself, and "make my own". But occasionally I do like a cigar, especially something like a Macanudo or a cigar along that like with a maduro wrapper. I don't pretend to know much about cigars, just what I've stumbled upon that I like.   Quality cigars are generally costly though. I discovered Backwoods Cigars, Honey Berry in particular, several years ago. I know some folks will say those are sissy flavored cigars, but I think they are pretty darn good..and they're affordable.   I do have a couple of pipes. 2 I inherited from my father, and one I picked up in Germany back in the 70's. I really do need to try them out, but haven't a clue as to what tobacco to try. Pipe tobacco recommendations are welcome and appreciated.   My grandmother (back in South Mississippi) taught me to make corncob pipes when I was 5 years old. She had me make them for her mother (full blooded Cherokee lady). It kept me busy and kept her mother happy. Smart lady my grandmother.
  9. I just never understood the attraction to $5.00/cup coffee from a drive-through...     I much prefer to brew my own.   Community Dark Roast or Breakfast Blend.      Excuse me while I pour another cup. :pleased:
  10. Welcome Goose.  :hat:
  11. Welcome aboard Mike.   You've found an exceptional community with helpful and knowledgeable members...make yourself at home. :pleased:
  12. I saw this last evening. Thanks for the link Steelharp.     It reminds me of the "bolo" shotgun rounds of yesteryear. An ingenious solution to a nonexistent problem. :shake:      Aim small, miss small. It's the hits to the vitals, with adequate penetration that'll carry the day...
  13. I think Luke and Serbu pretty much nailed it.   I was recently reading an article regarding the growth of firearm purchases over the last several years...and it is dramatic. For that I'm glad....more members in our ranks. Buy more members needing ammo too.     And I don't have any issue with any shooter stocking back any amount of ammo they choose. I know I kick myself in the butt for not putting back 10 or more cases of Blazer 9mm back when Academy sold it at $89.00/1000 as recently as 2006. But I didn't...so my bad.   When I find a bargain I'll consider it. But I handload the vast majority of my ammo these days and focus my limited funds towards that particular addiction.       Scalpers...hustlers and carnies ...  and I mean no disrespect to the hustlers and carnies.
  14. I just wanted to bump this back up for any updates and/or new suggestions.   I completed Book 6 of the Holding their Own" series by Joe Nobody (Bishop's Song) and found it to be right on par with the rest of the series, meaning, imho, excellent.   I'm just starting the "Dark Grid" series and the first book looks promising so far. http://www.amazon.com/Dark-Grid-When-Lights-Permanently/dp/1468079158/ref=sr_sp-atf_title_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1389191290&sr=1-3&keywords=dark+grid+series     Robert: What do you think of "The Carrington Effect: a novel of hope" by Andrew B. Dill so far?
  15. Don't worry Spiffy...   We just ran around air-gunning and going "BANG" "BANG" "BANG"...no live ammo nor animals were harmed during our practice sessions as my scores attest to. :surrender:       Brasil is correct Rickey...we'd be happy to have you as a neighbor my friend. :pleased:       I like the IDPA = "I Don't Practice Anymore!" Spiffy... that's funny.
  16. Welcome aboard.   And Thank you for your service Sir.
  17.   Congrats Brasil!   Well done Sir.   Great shooting by all of you guys!           It sounds like there's a story to be told about that flat...   Gunshot Wound? Sabotage? Flat only on one side?   Inquiring minds... :pleased:
  18. LOL. I'm glad you enjoyed the pickles Brasil.   "picklegasm"...You are just inviting abuse Brother.       I saw Spiffy pull over when I was leaving...and asked if he needed help...but he flagged me around him. I guess he wanted you to watch him change his tire...go figure...     Rickey my friend, if I hadn't taken notes I couldn't have remembered to post about the match! LOL.     I'm looking forward to the next match for sure.
  19. Good link and point Randall.   In my experience, we...as a society...want a prescription for "something" every time we see a physician or NP or PA...just so we "feel" they are doing "something".   Antibiotics don't "kill" a bacteria in the generally accepted sense.. They were never designed to do so. They interfere in cell wall growth or formation (RNA/DNA) in some manner, allowing the body to complete the job....oversimplified explanation I know...   Link: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=how-do-antibiotics-kill-b   One issue as far as the proliferation of superbugs is, as Randall mentioned, overuse and or inappropriate use and (my biggest pet peeve) not completing the antibiotic dose regime. Incomplete dosing (i.e. having "left over" antibiotics) as folks sometimes do because they stop taking them when symptoms diminish only accelerates the bacteria's ability to develop resistance. The length of time an antibiotic is prescribed for isn't an arbitrary time frame, but a length of time and dosing scientifically proven to be optimal for elimination of that particular organism...   My point being that if a person chooses to store antibiotics just to make sure you know when to use them, which one is needed for what type of bacterial infection, be aware of drug allergies and interactions, learn the treatment regimes, and don't use them for viral infections in general... You don't have to go to medical school to be safe on this. Great info is available...both online and from your health care provider...while you still have one anyway thanks to the Unobtainable Care Act and .gov....     "Where there is no Doctor", "Ditch Medicine", A PDR (Physician's Desk reference) and a "Dorland's Medical Dictionary" aren't bad to have on hand for SHTF.   The TC3 or "Tactical Combat Casualty Care" guidelines are pretty helpful as well.     Thanks to the OP for the topic btw... I'm not wearing my tinfoil hat today anyway.
  20. This is a topic of interest to me as well.   It is my understanding that the antibiotics used in veterinary medicine is exactly the same as used for humans...same manufacture, same equipment, just different labeling.   There was a study conducted by our military several years back entitled SLEP or Shelf Life Extension Program. Our military was trashing countless millions of dollars worth of meds related to an arbitrary expiration date agreed upon by the FDA and Pharmaceutical companies. This study (which was pulled from general circulation...you can Google it for more details) indicated that the vast majority of oral antibiotics maintain up to or greater than 90% of their efficacy 10-15 years after their expiration date. As with all things LTS (long term storage) protecting the items from extreme temperature changes, moisture, light and oxygen dramatically extend their shelf life. IIRC liquid medications ( IV antibiotics) did not store as well, nor as long. The vast majority of IV antibiotics we use are in powder form and mixed prior to administration.   Big Pharma makes big bucks selling meds and on disease maintenance...so I'm sure they were really happy about the SLEP and wanted the info freely given to the public... :squint:   The SLEP is still listed via a few .gov websites, but access is restricted. I've had a couple of my prepper buds that happen to be physicians try to sign up to gain access, but were denied as they were not active military not .gov employees. ymmv.   Regards the tetracycline like antibiotics. As best I have been able to discover that concern over "outdated" tetracycline being deadly stems from a case in 1960 or 1961 where a patient with multiorgan system failure and complicated disease processes died...the most recent antibiotic having been tried being tetracycline and the drug was blamed for his death...which was imminent anyway. And so the legend of deadly tetracycline was born. Now bear in mind that I in no way recommend anyone storing any medication, nor purchasing any medication from any source you an uncomfortable with. Most folks may just be surprised how helpful your primary care physician would be in helping you to build up a reasonable supply of appropriate non-controlled medications. My advice is to simply express your concerns and needs with them in a reasonable manner...I probably wouldn't mention zombies ( although I'm certain more than a few inhabit our local Emergency rooms late at night  ).     Just my unsolicited and ever devaluing :2cents: .
  21. That was a fun match! And the weather actually turned out great...much better than the snow storm last year!     I doubt Mike Madden ever looks on here (he should). I shot in his squad yesterday and just wanted to say Thanks to Mike. He is a genuinely a good guy. We had several new shooters in our group and Mike spent a great deal of time helping them get grounded, and feel welcome. +1 to Mike.     I only get to shoot matches about 6 months out of the year because of my work schedule. So it was good to see Brasil, Spiffy, Johnny, Nathan et al. Got to meet DL and Rickey (Rickey already told me he'd forget who I was by the end of the day...LOL) ...I'm the old fart that looks like a skinny Col. Sanders...only I'm broke, yet alive. :pleased:       btw...are you guys saying that air-gunning by flashlight is unethical?   I think Brasil uses NVD's anyway...
  22.     LOL...me either.    But a man can dream. :pleased:
  23. Heck of a job on the Colt.   Man...that would have tempted me to tweak it a bit more into  Fitz Special. Something I always wanted to do, but just never got around to having it done.   Thanks for posting the pics.
  24. Great photos all.   But I'm really liking the sawed off 12 g and Bucheimer (or facsimile) Blackjack...Old school but stills Rocks.
  25. I've shot untold thousands of rounds of jacketed handloads through my Glock's (17-19-26).   About all I handload these days are 147 gr lead rounds. But as mentioned above I purchased aftermarket barrels and I now have peace of mind. In my case I picked up a couple of Lone Wolf barrels and a "U" die or "undersize die" because of the much tighter tolerances in the Lone Wold barrels. Reliability is remarkable, and of course, the rounds are capable of much greater accuracy than I am.   Good read from Runco above btw.
