1. Some excellent advice has already been offered.   The below is a good source of information and well worth the time to read, imho.     Doctor Gary Roberts, DocGKR   http://www.ar15.com/ammo/project/Self_Defense_Ammo_FAQ/
2.     And there's the rub. I carry a 9mm and feel confident that it will do it's job, if I'll just do mine.   I think there is wisdom to the old adage "carry the largest caliber you can handle"...but truly mastering a Magnum caliber is no easy feat. Shot to shot time can be pretty slow as compared to a non-magnum caliber. And since predators do seem to hunt in packs, that shot to shot accurate placement is critical.   I've treated patients shot with .357's, heck, nearly every handgun cartridge except the .357 Sig. It was always placement into an appropriate vital target (with adequate penetration) that ruled the day. But a human's reaction to be shot is extremely variable and based on many, many factors.   My personal preference is a handgun I can shoot accurately, rapidly, and has a lot of rounds...more rounds = better survival chance imho.   As has been mentioned, shooting on a square range at 2 dimensional targets with no one shooting back at you is one thing...2 way range with full on "flight or fight" response? Not gonna be so easy...   :2cents:
3.     Thank you Lowpower. I appreciate that.   I'm always looking for recommendations Sir. But some books are worth a re-read periodically.
4. LOL. I finished it last night Erik.   Good read...I'm looking forward to the next installment.
5.     There is a lot of truth here folks. It requires a great deal of dedication, skill, and knowing and accepting the limitations.   There are a few folks out there to emulate in this regards, Claude Werner is one of them. (aka Head Hunter) I have only "interacted" with him during my time on TPI. A couple of my friends trained with him. But my J frame is what I refer to as a "Werner Setup" as I put it together based on his recommendations.   http://www.personaldefensenetwork.com/claude-werner/   I would still want at least 2 of them though...
6.     Actually all 3 isn't that unreasonable.
7.   Sage advice!   All things mechanical can, and do, break. Murphy goes to more training classes than I manage to get to LOL.
8. I do carry a J Frame...but 99.9% of the time as a second handgun...accessible primarily to my "other" hand. My primary is a Glock 19 or 17 and spare mags.   I don't live or work in a high risk area...but I definitely acknowledge that such events as Randy described above can and do happen. I have had far too many patients either drive in or walk in with multiple handgun wounds to feel confident that 5 rounds may be all I need.   I have lived and worked in that high risk area and carried 2 Glocks during that time frame...but the potential exists even now...so it's a comfort, not a burden. But it's a choice we all must make.   Parrothead: I understand the point you are making. And Yes, there are folks that carry daily, and periodically, that feel comfortable just knowing that they have "something" besides that sharp stick available to them. I hope they never need that tool, and the odds are they never will. I'm just not a very good gambler...   Yes, there are times, that 0.1% I mentioned, when I will have just my J Frame...but that would be a non-permissive environment where I would otherwise be unarmed...and I do feel under-gunned during that period of time.     Handgun rounds are woefully inadequate. Predators hunt in packs. And Murphy follows close at hand. We all have to live with the choices we make and I don't judge anyone that chooses to do anything differently from what I do...it's a personal decision.   :2cents:
9. Chinook Med is also having a "Black Friday" sale.   I've done business with Chinook Med for a long time and highly recommend them.   http://www.chinookmed.com/cgi-bin/category/offerdetails?utm_source=CMGWebsite&utm_medium=Photo&utm_term=BlackFridaySale&utm_content=HomepageHeader&utm_campaign=BlackFridaySale     The Kerlix Gauze roll is a good buy. These are extremely useful for wound packing. I keep several in all of my kits and use Kerlix almost daily at work.   fwiw...Wound packing is a technique use to apply pressure to a deeper wound. For additional info you might want to view this link, in particular the section on "Gunshot Wounds". http://medic.wikia.com/wiki/Special_considerations_for_gunshot_wounds_and_shrapnel_wounds
10. A Happy and very Blessed Thanksgiving to you Bersa. And to all of the good folks here at TGO.     I'll be working Thursday but we have a turkey in the oven as I type this.   I hope you all have a great day...and stay away from my E.R.!  ( I mean that in a good way folks LOL).
11. Thank you for posting this SupaRice.   I just joined.   I am also a Knife Rights member and I am extremely appreciative for the hard work Knife Rights, Todd, and all the rest put forth for our State.   I have no doubt the same efforts will go towards removing further obstructions to exercising our Constitutionally Protected, yet violated, Rights.   Todd has already demonstrated he knows how to work to makes the changes happen. Dig deep and help folks.
12. I applaud you for wanting to train with the gun you carry.   The majority of training now days is geared towards running a semi-auto handgun mainly because the majority of students carry a semi-auto. But a quality instructor should definitely be able to help you maximize your potential with your chosen handgun...revolver or semi-auto.   A revolver is definitely slower to reload, but you go into this class already acknowledging that fact.   Bring several speed loaders and / or speed strips. Carry them as you would in everyday life. And learn all you can.   Steinbeck put it well "The final weapon is the brain, all else is supplemental".   :2cents:
13. I couldn't wait, so I ordered it from Amazon anyway LOL.   The reviews are pretty decent...and..it is Joe Nobody. :pleased:
14. btw....Has anyone read "The Olympus Device" by Joe Nobody?   http://www.amazon.com/Olympus-Device-Book-One/dp/0985563494/ref=sr_1_14?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1416564175&sr=1-14&keywords=joe+nobody
15. Thanks for the Head's Up superduty.   I'll get it ordered. I had no idea either.     I'm glad you got to read U.C. Erik. It does go on & on after a while. I found the "evolution" of the degradation of our "Gun Rights" particularly interesting and well written.
16. That is awesome Bersa!       What a great community!
17.     LOL. No worries Sir...it was just an excuse to whine a bit. :pleased:     And I sincerely do hate to miss this class. It will be an excellent experience I have no doubt.
18. LOL.   My apologies Dustbuster. You are fine. It's Dolomite I'm a might concerned about now... :yuck:
19. something is wrong with you Dustbuster... :ugh:             me too I guess because that's funny! :pleased:
20. While not a gong, I would love to have a few of these.   https://www.wideners.com/itemdetail.cfm?item_id=8800&dir=1020|1022   1st hand experience will have to come from folks more fortunate than I am LOL
21.   Excellent advice and I strongly second that recommendation.     Another considerations is a Wilderness First Aid course like one taught by NOLS: http://www.nols.edu/wmi/courses/wildfirstaid.shtml
22.   That's an incredible price on the QC! Good deal!   My larger trauma kit does have airway and IV gear in it. I'm very fortunate that the majority of my training and shooting buds are Paramedics and ER physicians...kinda handy you know?  :pleased:    So I agree that having some "advanced" gear on hand for someone with a higher skill level is actually quite prudent.
23. You know, sometimes I think Randy phones my place of employment to make certain I am working before he schedules events like this...   And if I wasn't working I would sure as heck be there! And man, Great Price!   This will be an excellent event no doubt. fwiw that Air Marshal Qual is a flipping challenge! for me anyway. Good fun!. :pleased:   Enjoy the class folks.   Hopefully next time...
24. No freezing for me. I'm certain ice forms, but they have never frozen solid nor split. Mine are originally blue food grade barrels and I drilled and fit brass spigots. They don't even leak at the spigots...
25.     Ordered it Mark. Thanks!   The book has good reviews on Amazon. I'm looking forward to reading it.
