Good SHTF Survival Fiction Books
Jamie Jackson replied to plank white's topic in Survival and Preparedness
Me too Erik. As I mentioned above I've already pre-ordered it...took him a bit and definitely hope it holds true to form and quality. But judging by "Dies Irae: Day of Wrath" it shouldn't disappoint. -
IDPA's new(er) Divisions (?) CCP & NFC
Jamie Jackson replied to Jamie Jackson's topic in Competitive Shooting Sports
Thanks for the explanation and insight Randy. Logical, makes sense. Heck...I think I still have some Clinton-era 10 round mags around somewhere LOL. I guess, on one level at least, that IDPA is 'leaning" towards the self defense minded concealed carrier. Thanks all for your input and opinions. -
While I've not had the opportunity to attend one of these events yet... Windrock Range, Norseman Training, and Fighting Sheep Dog are bringing great things to our area. I am a member at Windrock and definitely enjoy shooting out there. Very gun friendly and training friendly outfit! Great folks as well. Thank you Fighting Sheep Dog...Rachel and John iirc and of Course Eric, Emily and Josh! As luck would have it I'm working May 17th, but I'll be there in spirit. :pleased:

IDPA's new(er) Divisions (?) CCP & NFC
Jamie Jackson replied to Jamie Jackson's topic in Competitive Shooting Sports
Thanks Craig. OK..then as I understand it, my G 26 would be optimal for CCP...probably best keep my 19 in ESP. That helps. You are, by far, the best "Range Lawyer" I know and I have your card to prove it! No know, RMR's are becoming more ubiquitous on carry guns in this country. It would only be logical to allow a Division where they could compete. I know some will argue cost...but facing reality, folks spend a fortune on their competition guns as it is...and regular EDC folks, like myself, can find some niche or other to fit into. It'd be a shame to ostracize people that carry RMR sighted handguns. Are handguns with mounted flashlights verboten as well guys? As I read through the Tiger Team reports and Rule book, I keep seeing mention of keeping IDPA "street realistic" (my term, not theirs)...but it's not looking that way to me... -
Sometimes I think IDPA is intentionally trying to confuse me...and that doesn't take a great deal as it is. OK...as I understand it there is now a CCP or Compact Carry Pistol Division. Then I read a discussion on Brian Enos about NFC or Not For Competition Division... I carry a Glock 19 and the grips are stippled...aftermarket sights, but bone stock other than that. The few matches I've been to, I shoot ESP. Now I know that IDPA wouldn't even consider something as realistic as AIWB carry...since that won't be an option, how do these other Division changes impact our area matches folks? fwiw ORSA is the only place I've shoot IDPA in TN. I'm hoping to shoot a classifier in a couple of weeks and shoot the Secret City sanctioned match in June. Thoughts and Insight appreciated. TIA.

scope or red dot with magnifier?
Jamie Jackson replied to maroonandwhite's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
I just have RDS on my AR's and AK's, but I've run a scope on my AR and will occasionally use it at the range. A bud has an EoTech with magnifier and really likes it. There certainly seems to be a current trend of running lower yet variable powdered scopes on defensive rifles...1-4 with "aiming dots" and they do make a lot of sense to me, especially with my aging eyes. The magnification of a scope would certainly help, even at relatively close to moderate range, with target identification and discrimination. fwiw I recently picked up Primary Arms Advanced Red Dot and ran it, in the rain, in Randy's recent Rifle class. I am more than impressed with it. Links below. Well worth the money imho. But I haven't seen it run with a magnifier, so can't comment on that. https://www.primaryarms.com/Primary_Arms_Advanced_Micro_Dot_with_Push_Buttons_p/md-ads.htm -

Amen as well GTG! Thank you for sharing the Prayer my friend. I'll share it as well. Excellent AAR . :pleased: -
LOL. I saw that. All over 1K as well as out of stock... I'm personally interested in one of the DDI AK's. Rumor has it they are coming out with an AK pistol designed to be more easily converted to a legal SBR. (not having to drill for a trunnion as I understand)...but I don't know the particulars. A bud of mine spoke with a rep at the NRA convention about it. We'll see what happens.

Holy Cow OS! What else am I missing? Good on Knoxville and TN! and Thanks for the info. I second the thought that factory direct purchasing would be great...if only...
-
They seem to be pretty well made. I'm guessing this is the outfit your bud was referring to OS. Not a lot of places building AK's around town. Here's a link to those crazy suckers at the AK Operators Union...NSFW Language...as usual...But they are rough on the guns they review...and entertaining...to me anyway. https://www.youtube.com/watch?list=UU0-nZ9dKQroaCr2MuAXeqyg&v=p6WtjNL2cNc

That is what a Glock should be! Well done Sir! There is no reason in the world not to modify and stipple that sucker. I own 3 and they have all been done so. Now that slide...Sweet! Something I need to consider. :pleased:
-
...That would be DDI or Destructive Devices Industries. Chapman Highway. By all accounts we have something pretty darn good going on in our own backyard. It seems they purchased the assets of Waffen Werks and are moving to make a quality AK. http://ddiarms.com/index.html https://www.facebook.com/pages/Destructive-Devices-Industries/726960474036519 I'm saving my lunchmoney.

I was the old goat running the timer...it can induce a bit of pressure can't it? :pleased: You did very well JReedEsq. It was a pleasure to meet you train with you. The same for all that attended. I always enjoy training with Randy and gain a great deal from each and every class. I appreciate Randy's skill and ability to impart his knowledge so effectively.I have much work to do after this weekend. . Yes..the FAM COF can definitely be humbling...but it gives a measurable focus for skill development imho. Pleased to meet and train with Timcar86 as well. Great shooting and gun handling skills Sir. My apologies for enlarging the groups on the targets we shared. LOL Prag aka Jamie -
Private Rifle Class Knoxville April 2015...AAR added
Jamie Jackson replied to Jamie Jackson's topic in Training Discussions
First: Thank you GTG for hosting this class and allowing us to train on your family property, yet again. You are a gentleman my friend. My appreciation to your family as well Sir. Excellent info and a great group of folks to train with. The students had various levels of experience, from multiple training classes to first time attendees. One student had just purchased his AR prior to the class…it ran like a top! The majority of the class, that is all of them except one odd-ball ran AR’s…I ran an AK…makes me the odd-ball I reckon…but not the only “unique-gun”…one student ran a Hi Point 9mm carbine. I was impressed…that sucker ran perfectly, nary a hitch. Sweet! Several of the students were running various chest rigs, several used belt mounted Kydex magazine holders/pouches, a couple ran mags from there pockets. A very salient point Randy made was the context within which we would be putting our long-guns to use in our homes….this was not a SWAT Call-Out Class. We will most likely be responding to a strange sound, perhaps breaking glass, or a scream…we will generally respond rapidly, and will “grab-n-go”. Rarely will there be time to don our “tactical gear”, but even more rarely would we need to fire that 30 round bang-stick in the confines of our home…we are in East TN after all, not Mogadishu! I keep my AK within reach in my bedroom with a shoulder bag beside it containing 2 extra AK mags, two pistol mags, a BOK, and an extra flashlight. I may or may not have time to grab the bag…situations will dictate that. (I will be adding active hearing protection to my kit.) Randy suggested a mag coupler for the AR guys…if you can’t deal with the problem with 60 rounds…you are probably in deep derp! Randy also told us about a very useful application for an unmounted light used within your “safe room” or bedroom…but you’ll need to train with Randy for that particular pearl. We did a good bit of dry fire work. Dry fire is probably the most unappreciated expenditure of training time in existence. It is invaluable imho. It doesn’t require expensive ammo, can be done in the confines of our own homes, we don’t have to contend with the distractions of muzzle blast and recoil, and we can do it frequently enough to have those movements and manipulations fresh in our brains if the SHTF! I picked up several iterations I will definitely incorporate into my own dry fire training practice. We worked from about 7 yards to 20 yards. Practiced malfunction clearances, reloads, reloading while moving (the chewing gum and walking at the same time concept), transitioning to the non-dominate side, and transitioning to sidearm. It was a “bit” muddy out there at the “farm”. So we didn’t do any prone. That you for that Randy! It’s appreciated. :pleased: A couple of the primary purposes of training are to identify your weaknesses and learn to turn them into strengths, and build on the strengths you possess already. I've done little but "bench shooting" of a long gun in the past 10 years. I identified many weaknesses in my "real world" long gun shooting abilities...but now I have the information to correct those thanks to Randy. Much obliged Sir. Hat’s off to Randy for a safe and very informative class! Prag aka Jamie -
Good SHTF Survival Fiction Books
Jamie Jackson replied to plank white's topic in Survival and Preparedness
I certainly concur hipower! "Dies Irae: Day of Wrath" is very well written and way too plausible. Makes you think...especially about "not so obvious" agenda's. I've loaned this book to a couple of friends and got the same response: "This could actually happen!" I per-ordered the sequel to "One Second After" by Forstchen..."One Year After". It looks like a September 2015 release date. Looking forward to it! http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0765376709/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 -

Mere hours away folks! I have my mags loaded and gear ready to do some training. Rain or shine... heck, we're in East Tennessee so probably both. :pleased: Come on out and join us folks...we still have a slot open I believe. Thanks to GTG for being a gracious host for these classes! -

Anyone tried Alliant BE-86 Powder yet?
Jamie Jackson replied to Jamie Jackson's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Thank you Gary. Have you happened to have chronoed that load yet? I hope to locate some and try it with 9mm rounds in the 124-130 gr range...but I do like 147's as well. Much obliged. -
Nice! Congrats pops! Nice shooting as well!

Is reloading 9mm cost effective?
Jamie Jackson replied to ehull20000's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Caster made some good points. We have no trouble scrounging free range brass, and thus far free lead...so it's only the investment (money-wise) in powder and primers. The current shortage has forced me out of my comfort zone as far as powders go and I've developed accurate and affordable loads using several powders I've never tried before for 9mm. That really increased my options and eased the strain of not having my historically preferred powders available. Monetary cost is still markedly less than .22 RF ammo. Time investment: not really an issue as I enjoy handloading..it's my "Zen moment". :pleased: or I can pop in my ear buds and listen to an episode of Ballistic Radio...with my current Dillon setup that works out to about 300 rounds per 45 minute episode. I'm happy with it.
