Anyone have any experience with HS-6 in 9mm?
Jamie Jackson replied to Jamie Jackson's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Thank you DWARREN. What powder charge range do get the best results with? If you don't mind me asking. -
In an effort to expand my options I picked up a pound of Hodgdon HS-6 over at Proneshooter in West Knoxville. While powder is being more readily available, I don't want to get caught up short when the next round of shortages hit...like after the upcoming Presidential election... Hodgdon lists the burn rate at 42, between AA5 and Winchester Autocomp powder. (There sure is a lot of variation in burn rate charts! ). link:https://www.hodgdon.com/PDF/Burn%20Rates%20-%202014-2015.pdf I plan to load 9mm lead bullets in 147 gr and our own powder coated cast 9mm bullets that weigh right at 130 grs. For the 130 gr I generally extrapolate off of data for 124 gr plated bullets and have done quite well thus far using Green Dot, Unique, AA#2, American Select and Winchester 231. HS-6, from what I have found online, seems to be the same powder as the older Winchester 540 fwiw. (from Hodgdon's website:"HS-6 is identical to Winchester's discontinued 540".) HS-6, from the Hodgdon load data site list the 9mm 130 gr plated bullet at 5.9-6.5 grs...that should be a pretty full 9mm case, if not a compressed load. Have any of you had experience with this powder in 9mm? I will also be loading some .38 spl and probably some .357 with this as well...so please chime in on these as well. I will start at a 10% reduction and work up and chronograph my work as is my norm. But I always appreciate the knowledge and experience of the handloaders found here. Thanks in advance for any suggestions or shared experiences.

Hornady Says “We Change Everything – 10/27/15”
Jamie Jackson replied to BigK's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I am glad the "change" is meaningful to some folks. I am thoroughly underwhelmed... -
I definitely understand that LawVol. It's hidden way back behind Biker Rags in an area that looks like industrial storage or offices...down what looks like a drive between Biker Rags and Christmas Lumber. They actually been there for more than a year and I didn't have a clue. Phil told me they would be putting a sign up near the road relatively soon. It's needed.

I know gunsane had a thread that mentioned this business a short time back, but I thought I'd give the good folks at Proneshooter in West Knoxville a thumbs up. Phil Hendra is the proprietor and is a genuinely nice guy. Phil is very knowledgeable and a good resource for beginning handloaders and seasoned rifle shooters. They have a very good in-store selection of powder for rifle and pistols at very reasonable prices. (I picked up the last couple of pounds of Unique and 4 pounds of Titegroup and some other powders yesterday.), along with a wide selection of primers, ammo, and a growing selection of quality firearms. The prices are very competitive. And Phil can get some darn good deals on items he may not have in store in short order. And his inventory has expanded quite a bit over the past couple of months. I like supporting local business whenever possible...and not having to pay HazMat fees on my reloading components and being able to purchase them at Proneshooter prices? It's a No Brainer for me! I have no business interest in Proneshooter at all, but thought I'd encourage anyone in our area looking for a good home town gunstore to give these nice folks a try. Link: http://www.proneshooter.com/index.php? They are located behind Biker Rags near the juncture of KIngston Pike and Lovell road...almost 4 miles from my house. :pleased:

Awesome story guys and very well told! LOL. I'm certain you both were in total control and all events were actually planned and handled with expertise. :pleased: I've had "sticky" Dillon primer tubes in the past, but hadn't had that particular issue before...thankfully! And my 550 is approaching 30 years of age. Dillon mailed me replacement tubes, at no charge, withing a couple of days of me e-mailing them about it. Their customer service is second to none in my book. Comms...e-mail Dillon and they will no doubt get you fixed up.

Caster. I appreciate your frustration. I am blessed in that there are several of us that do get together frequently. We mostly work on armed skills. I wish we could do more...and will keep trying to nudge in that direction. And believe me I understand that life certainly will place demands on all of us. I totally believe that the priorities for most of us, at least for me, are: God-Family-Work... But being able and capable of defending yourself and those entrusted to your care are a priority as well. Those skills are perishable, and more often than not an integration of various skills are required. A fella can't just shoot someone that's being a PIA...but you gotta be able to recognize pre-assault cues, act on them, and have some other tricks in your bag besides a bang-stick. But honestly, so many people "don't know, what they don't know"... As I said, I know it's frustrating Caster...but there are folks out there that are like minded and share your priorities and willingness to learn. Keep looking my friend.

To the best of my knowledge as long as you have the certifications, like ASP or Monadnock you are GTG in TN. I took (actually hosted) a Monadnock class several years back just for this reason. I extrapolated on this a bit and carry a sap. I find them much more useful than a collapsible baton...although I see no problem with an ASP. Personal choice based on previous training and experiences is all. TN State Law 39-17-1308 (9) By any person possessing a club or baton who holds a certificate that the person has had training in the use of a club or baton for self-defense that is valid and issued by a certified person authorized to give training in the use of clubs or batons, and is not prohibited from purchasing a firearm under any local, state or federal laws; or link to that section of law: http://law.justia.com/codes/tennessee/2010/title-39/chapter-17/part-13/39-17-1308

So I am thinking about starting a TGO Hall of Shame
Jamie Jackson replied to TGO David's topic in General Chat
I think jgradyc's suggestion is solid. Quite a few forums I've been on in the past had similar requirements. In some manner it can add to the credibility of the individual. I plead ignorant as to the legal ramifications as it relates to this, but I certainly wouldn't have any issues with calling out someone of dubious character and having a place to refer to for such information. :2cents: -
I purchased a 9mm S&W Shield a few months back. It's a great little gun and shoots easily as well as most full size handguns I own. I've been a certified dyed-in-wool Glockophile for a loong time. Love my 19. And love the fact that parts, such as a RSA (Recoil Spring Assembly) are inexpensively and readily available. I am a firm believer in training with what you carry. Working them hard. And maintaining them. I've fired many thousands of round through my G19, and routinely change the factory RSA every couple of thousand rounds. I really like carrying the Shield but I have had a challenge locating replacement RSA's for it. I originally e-mailed S&W about it (maybe last April). They said they had none in stock and suggested Brownell's or MidwayUSA. They had none and suggested S&W. LOL. I e-mailed S&W again in early Sept and the rep (Ashley) said they were still out, but she'd put in a back ordered for 2 of the RSA's for me at no charge. Well they arrived today. That is solid customer service imho. So I wanted to share that bit of info. I'm right at 750 rounds through the Shield with no issues. Now I'm GTG for several thousand more rounds. I've looked for aftermarket RSA's for the Shield, but haven't located any yet. I prefer to run OEM when I can...but if any of you run across anyone making aftermarket sets, please chime in. Options are a good thing.

Talking to me about Progressive Presses
Jamie Jackson replied to CommsNBombs's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Excellent choice comms. I've been handloading on a 550 since the late 1980's. Dillon's customer service is nothing short of remarkable. I have no idea how many rounds of 9mm and 45acp I've loaded on it...but it's a significant amount (14 K just last year). I've worn out parts and Dillon has replaced them for free, and quickly. I did have "refinished" last year...minimal charge and it looks and runs like a brand new 550. I do have an old single stage Lee I loaded on for a few years before the Dillon, and still use that old sucker frequently, especially for rifle rounds. I keep saying I'll but a new press one day...but I can't seem to actually wear these out enough to justify the money for such. :pleased: -
GTG. I've been using a Mika pocket holster for my J Frame for about 15 years. I've used numerous other pocket holsters over the past 25 years, including a horsehide leather one I bought from Greg Kramer back when it was ProLine Leather goods. Hand's down the Mika is my favorite and I plan to order one for my Shield within the next few weeks. btw...I've had my J Frame in my pocket every time we've shot and trained together. If I known you were considering one I would have let you try this out. You are more than welcome anytime brother. http://mikaspocketholsters.com/index.html

Good SHTF Survival Fiction Books
Jamie Jackson replied to plank white's topic in Survival and Preparedness
I'm about 70% finished with One Year After. It's definitely different, as I guess it would have to be. Still well written though. It'd be nearly impossible to match the uniqueness and originality of One Second After...that book open the door to prepping for a lot of folks. Thanks for the head's up on Rage hipower. I'll check it out. I just ordered: Session ll by Joe Nobody. The first one was decent...so we'll see. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/151730895X?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00 -
As far as I know there really isn't a wait list...but the process takes several weeks and includes a sit-down classroom type orientation that's about 4 hours long. PM me when you are settled in and we'll arrange a "look-see" if you are interested.

Welcome Dan. Congrats on your choice of a new home state. There are several ranges for handgun, shotgun, and rifle in the Knoxville area. I am a member at ORSA and at Windrock. Windrock will allow daily passes as well as annual membership. It depends on how often you go to shoot...but it's an excellent range and very affordable. http://www.windrockshootingrange.com/ ORSA has a lot to offer and except for the various matches (IDPA,USPSA,Steel Challenge, 3-Gun and Cowboy Action) membership and a sponsor are required. Great place to shoot, I was out there with a couple of TGO members shooting this morning. Affordable place to shoot as well. http://www.orsaonline.org/

Amazing new holster design
Jamie Jackson replied to Dolomite_supafly's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I think it would take some work to obtain a one hand access and that is a valid concern. Although slower than a traditional draw, I think it could be developed. As jgradyc mentions...a forceful pull may make the gun airborne...doubtful...but possible. I just purchased a K of ammo, so I'll have to wait a bit to order one. But I would really like to explore it's potential. -
Now take this with a grain of salt...it is the NY Post... “The shooter was lining people up and asking if they were Christian,” she wrote. “If they said yes, then they were shot in the head. If they said no, or didn’t answer, they were shot in the legs." I've seen this on another forum as well. And not having any demographic information yet to be released on the shooter, one has to wonder why? It probably doesn't fit the left's narrative very well I would suppose. http://nypost.com/2015/10/01/oregon-gunman-singled-out-christians-during-rampage/

Amazing new holster design
Jamie Jackson replied to Dolomite_supafly's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
You know...I've been thinking...that's not always a good thing. :ugh: This definitely looks to be a great niche holster, certainly great for an NPE (Non-Permissive Environment). The draw is similar to drawing from a deep appendix bellyband carry I use in certain environments. The grip on the handgun is carried underneath the beltline. It too requires 2 hands to draw the handgun, and it too makes for a difficult re-holstering, at the very least a cautious and purposeful 2 hand re-holstering. That is the primary reason I usually choose to carry a Hip-grip J-frame in this manner. This is not a compliant, merely an observation. But this holster looks to have a more positive drawstroke than my occasional bellyband carry. I'm putting this one on my "potential purchase" list. I can definitely see value in it. :2cents: -
Great deal bersa! Good for you. My father & I each had one of those back in the mid-1960's. They put many, many squirrels on our table. And quite a few rabbits to boot. Great little guns.
