  1. I pretty much agree with all that has been posted...but especially this. I sometimes wonder if folks simply hadn't explored their posting options. Bedside simply editing the title, we have multiple tags at our disposal. I'm an old technotard but seem to be able to muddle through this. Maybe if listings were properly tagged, in a timely fashion, we wouldn't see so many 2-3 year old listings with a "Is this still available?" posting from new members...
  2. Thanks for the link and info @Grayfox54. I'm actually pleased to see companies looking into .22 LR defensive ammo development. While it certainly isn't the ideal self defense round by any stretch, it is most definitely a used in such a role frequently. By Good Guys/Gals and bad. Greg Ellifritz and Claude Werner have written about actual .22 use several times. Obviously they agree to carry and use the most effective (i.e.largest) caliber you can. But the majority of civilian shooting are a "Get off me" "Break contact" type of situation. I will carry a .22 frequently, albeit as a second handgun. My primary being a 9mm or a .38 spl. The .22 is my "Off hand" gun. It's an LCR that with over 2000 rounds fired through it this past year has proven incredibly reliable. I have had one, possibly two, rounds fail to fire on the first strike... and those were with old (circa 2012) Thunderbolts very recently... go figure LOL But a second pull of the trigger got me to the next round. Nice that revolvers can do that. I have a few hundred rounds of Federal Spitfire solids and I keep the little LCR loaded with those. I'll shoot the cylinder full out when I go to the range 3-4 times per month. I've seen folks shot with pretty much everything that fits in a handgun. Most folks survive handgun shooting fwiw...all handguns are pretty anemic. Placement counts! I am in no way suggesting a person should handicap themselves by carrying a less effective round, but I do think the .22 has it's place in the stable. I'm carrying a Glock 19 loaded with 147 gr HST as I type this... but that little .22 is in my pocket. Options are a good thing. https://www.activeresponsetraining.net/using-the-22-for-self-defense https://www.growingupguns.com/2014/09/13/the-special-application-22lr-for-home-defense-part-1-weigh-the-evidence-and-make-a-decision/ ETA part 2: https://www.growingupguns.com/2014/09/16/the-special-application-22lr-for-home-defense-part-2-the-setup/
  3. I stand corrected. "Affordably priced " readily available ammo LOL I shot a good bit of Wolf and Tula ammo, in both carbine and handgun ( 9mm and 45 acp). I've found it a bit dirty, but totally functional.
  4. I agree with @No_0ne. Once available, try as many brands as you can, in the bullet weight of your choice, for reliability and point of impact with your sights, on your chosen gun. The twist rate of your AR (5.56) should direct you to bullet weight ranges. I have a preference for Federal handgun ammo. But Federal, Winchester, Speer, Hornady, Remington (and several others) make quality ammo. Maybe they'll be readily available again... one day.
  5. People are certainly paying more than I've ever seen before. I don't doubt pricing will trend back some once herd settles down but it certainly looks like a +10-20% may be the new norm... sadly.
  6. I've seen a "letter" reportedly from Winchester floating around the interwebz...so take that with a grain of salt. But in that "letter" Winchester stated essentially that ammo will see a price increase of 8-10%, components 10%, and primers an increase of 25% starting in May (as best I can recall). I have no reason to doubt this. I'm just glad to see some availability out there for the folks new to our addiction, errr passion. It must be daunting for the new shooters. I'm in good shape myself and will barter or trade if needed, and certainly help out those I choose to help. But having been a shooter during the Clinton era ban and all that has followed helped me lean toward the preparation side of things...and I encouraged my friends to do likewise. Most did.
  7. Congrats! It's like striking gold isn't it?
  8. I can only speak for myself. But I probably would try them. I've used some metal can 3031 and cardboard container 2400 and W 231 over the past couple of years with no problems. (The powders and primers were from the early 1990's). Of course the powders and primers were mine, and I knew the storage conditions. I would want to see and handle the containers personally, but it sounds like you did and have not found them wanting. But it's always a risk with these things. Powders and primers keep for a mighty long time if stored properly.
  9. Love to see some pics of your bed design @ReeferMac. Sounds like you have a system going on. We have one 4x8 raised bed planted with Sugar Snaps (a derivation of snow peas) and they are doing well. Our other beds are primed and ready, but as @peejman and @Raoul mentioned, still a bit cool to do any serious planting. But soon!
  10. Excellent AAR @LUVMYFREEDOM. Great pics as well. Thank you. This is a great skill-set to develop. Keep practicing with your TQ! I hate I missed this class. Randy and A.J. are great guys.
  11. Welcome aboard @smallfish and welcome to TN. I am local to you, West Knoxville. I mainly shoot handgun at Point Blank these days, but I've been a member at ORSA since I relocated here in '06. Windrock Shooting Range in Oliver Springs is a good place to shoot as well. Great folks there in my experience. As @hipower mentioned, there's several of us around here. Current commitments and situations limit my time and availability at the moment unfortunately. But things change, all in time.
  12. This reminded me of an article I read several years ago in Backwoods Home magazine. Great magazine imho. The article was written by Charles Wood. He buried a Ruger Ranch Rifle and several thousand rounds of .223 ammo (and related gear) and retrieved them after 15 years. Mr.Wood goes into pretty fair detail of the process and the article has some interesting observations as well. https://www.backwoodshome.com/bury-a-gun-and-ammo-for-15-years/
  13. I was just yanking yer chain my friend. The media looks great! Not nearly as dirty as without the dryer sheets. Thank you for the suggestion. I was simply compelled, uncontrollably I might add, to be a smart a**.
  14. OK, I tried this. Now my brass has no "static cling" and smells like Gain detergent "Moonlight Fresh". Have I been had?
  15. Thank you @RED333! That's pretty darn clever my friend.
  16. I'd appreciate seeing a pic of the setup you're describing @RED333. Sounds like something I could work with. Thanks @jpx2rk. I'll eventually have to try wet tumbling. btw, the Zilla media worked great and I couldn't appreciate any dust issues.
  17. I've got the Zilla running in my tumbler as I type this. I don't deprime my brass first btw. I 'll give it a few hours and see how it works. My tumbler is in my basement, so the potential for dust really isn't a concern.
  18. I probably do need to at the very least consider the change. Money is kinda tight right now. But there's always the next Black Friday sale My old Dillon tumbler just keeps working. Like my old Lee press, I keep thinking I'll replace it when it wears out... 30 years later they just keep working LOL
  19. Thank you @xsubsailor! The 10 qt Zilla "Desert Blend" is only $17.99 and the Petco is just down the road from me. Think I'll give it a try. Thank you @jpx2rk... just saw your reply as I was posting this.
  20. Well it's time to change the media in FL 2000 tumbler. Lord that stuff gets dirty... I've seen Lizard bedding ( Zilla crushed walnut) mentioned on several forums and iirc I've seen it mentioned here at TGO. The local Petco carries it at a much lower price than places like Midway . I know walnut doesn't polish as well as corncob media. I'm not looking for "pretty", just clean brass. Anyone have any first hand experience using this? TIA
  21. You're welcome my friend. I like the green
  22. I'm currently shooting 147 gr Hoosier Hi-Tek coated bullets using 3.5 grs American Select and these run around 900 fps. (The bullets are $78.00/1000 as I type this.) My load data log says I've chronoed 147 gr lead (Falcon bullets) at 880 fps using 3.9 grs Unique. AmSel is my favorite powder for 147 gr 9mm. Very accurate rounds with a nice recoil impulse. What coated bullets are you using btw?
  23. Welcome aboard.
  24. Welcome to TN and TGO. Another West Knoxville member here.
