Thank you. That makes life more simple.

God forbid it should come to pass, But if I had to grab one it’d be one of my AK’s. That’s because I have the most trigger time on it recently…the past 7 years or so. As it’s said, if your training isn’t Recent,Relevant, and Realistic, you may have trouble waiting around the corner. For me, that’d be my AK.

Reloading the 7.62 x 54 r

Thank you kind Sir. I really appreciate that. -
I forgot to mention it, but this post was my motivation to re-post an avatar. Could you imagine several hundred Alfred E. Newman's looking at you! Thanks for the info and help here folks.

Reloading the 7.62 x 54 r
Jamie Jackson replied to Jamie Jackson's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Thank you PoofNoEyeBrows. I would be more than pleased with a 4" group at 100 yds with iron sights. Smart move essentially using a Ransom Rest for working up your loads. I try to remove the "me factor" whenever I can also. I definitely wrote down the Nosler ballistic tip 150gr with 48grs. H4895 in my reloading book and plan to give it a try. Since all of my thoughts are just that, thoughts, at this time, I'm looking forward to picking up a Mosin or two as soon as my C&R get here and working up some rounds. I appreciate all the info & input folks. -
No Sir, I didn't realize it. And I am quite pleased, but not surprised that the software is smarter than I am. I confess to being a technotard (an aging technotard at that), and appreciate having an area to ask questions and seek advice such as this section. Yep, I am quite happy it worked! btw...Ilike the new layout and setup of the forums.

Reloading the 7.62 x 54 r
Jamie Jackson replied to Jamie Jackson's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
I did have the opportunity to check it out. Excellent thread with solid info. I’ve bookmarked a good bit of info regarding forward mounted scopes for a Mosin thanks to you and the other folks that have shared their experiences here. I look forward to my continuing education. -
Excellent tutorial, great pics, and solid info! Thank you for taking the time Caster.

Reloading the 7.62 x 54 r
Jamie Jackson replied to Jamie Jackson's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Good point. And not at dumb question in any way. I've found that most firearms are capable of greater inherent accuracy than I can deliver. That being said, 3-4" offhand at 50-75 yds has always been plenty good enough for clean kills in my experience. I personally would be fine with 3" groups (iron sights) at 100 yds. Scoped? I would hope for better. What I would like is the 3" capability, preferably 2", and then it'd be up to me to put in the "trigger time". My Brother-in-law way back down south has taken quite a few white tails with a Model 44 and Wolf ammo over the years. I've taken white tail, mule deer, antelope, and hogs with an '06...an old ADL I wish I still had... and several white tail with my old 336 in .30-30. But there is just something about the Mosin Nagant's that I find intriguing, so would like to pursue. The AK toughness just appeals to me. -
Very Nice dou44! pcrc; I'm looking forward to your feedback on SOG and some pics. I'll sure be glad when my C&R gets here...

I just loaded an avatar today. My old one “disappeared†with the forum update. No Biggie. I did have to resize my new avatar to a 250 x 167 pixel size in order to get it to load. Anything larger wouldn’t upload from my desktop. Just an FYI FWIW.

Reloading the 7.62 x 54 r

Noted Good Sir. I assumed as much, but you know what "they" say about assumptions. I've never cast bullets, but it certainly something I will take into consideration. Much Obliged. -
Reloading the 7.62 x 54 r
Jamie Jackson replied to Jamie Jackson's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Thank you. I was searching online for components (mostly MidWayUsa) and for load data at various places. (Any suggestions for component purchasing is also appreciated as well.) I did note that several people recommend slugging the barrel to determine bullet size, as I see bullets from .308-.311 recommended. Is this a worthwhile effort? Or even necessary? I'm not looking to make this a long range precision tool (aka killer-tacticool-sniper-ninja-rifle ). But I do want to be able to get decent accuracy from it for hunting and shooting in general. What are your thoughts folks? -
I'm probably in trouble thanks to you guys

LOL. No Doubt about that. -
Reloading the 7.62 x 54 r
Jamie Jackson replied to Jamie Jackson's topic in Ammunition and Reloading
Good suggestions folks. Pulling the bullets and reloading should make the effort more affordable. ! appreciate the tip on the wc844 and 315 bullets dlm37015. Thanks. -
Obviously my search skills are weak. Do any of you guys reload for the 7.62 x 54 r ? Especially as far as hunting rounds go? Surplus ammo is pretty affordable currently, but 7.62x54r hunting rounds like Hornaday are expensive. Any experiences, suggestions, loadings, thoughts and experiences are appreciated. Sorry about my “search weakness†if this topic has been beat to death.

Backwoodsman is a good mag, but I'm a big fan of BackWoodsHome. I've only been a subscriber to BHM for 4 years, but frequently reference the BHM articles. I even have a few of their anthologies. Their website allows you to look up older articles and subjects. Besides writers like Massad Ayoob, John Silveria, Claire Wolfe, and Dave Duffy make for excellent reading and with a strong Second Amendment Pro Constitutional and libertarian bent. The only other mag I subscribe to is SWAT (and have since 1987). BHM is a keeper, imho.

LOL, That my friend, is more than likely exactly what I'll wind up doing. I'm just glad my wife isn't a member of this forum. -

Great info and thoughts folks. Much obliged. Yer right Stg. Joe...at least there's a treatment plan available here. nightrunner, I've dealt with my 1911 "issue" for better than 25 years now. No cure for that one! Thanks for the suggestions. I'll keep an eye on AIM. As soon as my C&R arrives I'll get the signed copies out. It looks like SOG has to have your license in order for you to view pricing. I'll definitely look into KY Gun as well. Thanks. Suggestions, opinions, and options are appreciated. Prag -
Ingle's also carries dry ice,if you have one in your AO. I do the Mylar-o2 absorber-bucket method. The delta69alpha channel has some excellent info. Food storage isn’t exactly inexpensive, but can be done frugally, and I need it to rely on it being in the best condition possible when and if I need it. The SHTF for a person can be something as ordinary as losing your job, or catastrophic medical expenses. The SHTF everyday for somebody. We garden, can, dehydrate, and store LTS foods. We store the foods we actually eat, to stay acclimated to them, and keep them rotated. I feel confident in a proven method like the Mylar and o2 absorbers. These are really are cheap insurance. Great find on the buckets. Wallyworld used to give them away around here, but stopped about a year ago. Ingle’s, Kroger’s, and Food City are still good sources.

OK; I read over several months’ worth of threads in this section and found some great info. I procrastinated long enough. So I applied for my C&R License. I also read over a good many threads on Mosin Nagants, have become addicted to Hickok 45's flippin' Youtube Channel! What have you people done to me? Ok, I can't turn back now. So I need your help in deciding which Mosin to purchase first. I like the 91/30, but I also like the OAL of the M 44. I don't really think I want a Type 53 after reading about the quality issues, and I know unless I can actually handle the gun in person, it'll be a bit of a risk anytime I order one. I want a Mosin for general shooting, but I'd also like to do some deer hunting with one as well. I may well eventually scope one out, like the discussion in the Affordable scope for Mosin thread. So I need to rely on your expertise here. Any suggestions for a first Mosin? I have a feeling there'll be a few in my future. Anyone handload the 7.62 x 54 R? Suggestions on vendors are welcome and appreciated. (I have several bookmarked to send signed copies of my C&R when it arrives.) Thanks for the help in advance. Also thanks for the new obsession...like I needed one...

Thanks for the info. I watched several of his vids today for the first time. Outstanding home range setup, and good reviews. Much obliged.

We picked up some 55 gallon food grade barrels from Volunteer Drum in Knoxville a few years back. At the time they were $30.00 each...But new, unused, & foodgrade. I wouldn't use drum/barrels for water or food storage that contained any kind of chemicals...it's just too much risk imho. Good Luck.

I watched some of it. I understand the concept within the parameters he prefaced. But Man, talk about Ninja Skills. I realize he's Force Recon. I'd kill myself trying some of the feats he pulled. If after a total TEOTWAWKI situation, I guess I could understand scavenging where I could... especially in regards to medications needed for those I care for. For myself, I think I would want to be far away form a major city. I found The History Channel's After Armageddon : Flu Pandemic more interesting...even if I did yell at the TV a time or two.
