I worked in New Orleans for nearly 20 years. Then along came Katrina and my hospital sank. fwiw Hospitals don't float well. Anyway...Concealed means concealed. I was always armed...always. But I don't drink and I followed the "Rule of Stupid". I Don't go to stupid places-with stupid people-and do stupid things. Never had an issue. I carried OC and a folder and a small fixed blade, and at least one Glock. New Orleans is a unique and fantastic place, with some great folks. Like Motasyco mentioned...If you can make to some of the outlying areas you'll run into some fine folks, good eats, and a safe time. The Quarter, being a Tourist Mecca, is heavily patrolled by NOPD: plainclothes, Uniformed, and Horseback. The lowlifes are just on the perimeter and waiting for an opportunity to take your stuff, or at the very least panhandle you.Situational Awareness is your best friend. The storm will pass soon enough. I hope you enjoy yourself. Eat some mudbugs for me.

I'm not surprised sbeck. They've secured my business. The 512 is a pretty decent unit, don't you think? I like the heck out of mine. I wouldn't mind having a couple of more of 'em. Gotta save my pennies up first though.

I just wanted to share a situation that occurred and its timely resolution. I own an EOTech 512 and have for a pretty long time. The date on it is 2003. Obviously it was well out of warranty. Long story short: I loaned it out and it took much longer than it should to be returned. Well... I recently got the unit back it wouldn’t turn on. No problem thought I, and I set about replacing the batteries. Problem was, the battery compartment, batteries, and contact points were corroded with rusty looking battery ooze. Lesson learned: I won’t be loaning out my gear like this again. I cleaned it as best I could, but had no luck whatsoever. Doom on me! I contacted Mike Kroll via customer service at EOTech. I explained what had happened to Mike. His initial reply was for me to order a new contact kit and a new battery compartment. Fair enough and good advice. I am not the original owner, but have had the unit since ’04. It’s seen some use and abuse. EOTech does have a repair service. The cost of a rebuild runs a bit more than $150.00. Still a bargain as a new EOTech 512 runs $415.00 currently. I e-mailed Mike and asked if there was a retail vendor as a source he’d recommend. He promptly e-mailed me back, asked for a mailing address, and sent the parts to me “free of chargeâ€. From the time I first e-mailed Mike to having the sight repaired, up and running like new was 6 days…and I was at work the majority of those days. I’m impressed. Customer Service with quite a few companies these days are simply automated e-mails and recorded or computer generated voice prompts. Not EOTech! This is Customer Service at its best. His actions demonstrated Integrity that went above and beyond as far as I’m concerned. This is the way it should be, but rarely is these days. Hat’s off to EOTech and Mike Krull. Well done and greatly appreciated. Disclaimer: I have no business connections whatsoever with EOTech. But I am a happy shooter!

Excellent write up JG. Thanks! My Wife & I just got in from seeing it at Turkey Creek in Knoxville. The film was extremely well made and, even though I was aware of a good bit of the background info, it really did a great job of putting things together contextually. I'm happy to see it's getting a wider release, and just hope more folks will get off their duff and go see it...and Pray there is still time. So...Go See it. Take someone with you... and Vote your conscience.

Thank you. Me too! The Good Lord looks out for foolish behavior...apparently. And you're right. It was excellent customer service, especially since I directly violated the factory warranty. I was fortunate on both accounts.

Great suggestions already. I keep my "old" glasses for spares. I have a set in each vehicle and at work. Another option for inexpensive, yet quality eyeglasses is Zenni Optical. Just make sure you get a copy of your prescription from your Optometrist with the pupillary distance on it.

I am an admitted Glockaholic and reloader. I have about 30,000 rounds of reloads through my Glock 19...I currently load 5.7 grains of Unique with a 124 gr. fmj bullet and standard small pistol primers...if I'm using magnum primers I reduce the powder to 5.5 grains.... When I had a Glock 21 I loaded 5.7 grains of W 231 with a 230 gr fmj. I probably put 15,000 rounds of my reloads through it. Confession: I did run a double charge of W231 through my G 21...that's 11.4 grains (only one second of focused inattention while reloading...Lesson: concentrate on the task at hand and not the kids!). The "kaboom" blew the plastic cover off the trigger, bulged the slide, split the frame, and blew the mag apart. I was not injured and even got my hit on the target. I contacted Glock, and told them what happened and the what the load was. Even though it was totally my fault and Glock warns against reloads...They wanted the pistol to examine and replaced the G 21 for me at no charge. That's part of the reason I remain a confessed Glockaholic...that and the incredible shootability and reliability I've experienced with my Glocks.

My honest opinion, and that's all it is, just my opinion. I think you're going about it correctly MidTNGlock. First, you're asking for assist and information. Good for you. That's an excellent first step. It looks like you've met someone that can help, another plus point. There has been some excellent information and suggestions already offered. I know an IDPA Match is a great place to meet other shooters, and learn safe techniques for practice and competition. I thoroughly enjoy going to and shooting matches. But I also think you're right in building correct fundamentals, working them under a professional watchful eye, and progressing from there. Ultimately training with a top notch pro like Randy Harris, Tom Givens, and a host of others in the region would be an excellent goal. This has been a very informative thread and I appreciate reading all of the input. Good Luck to you MidTNGlock.

Absolutely. Incredibly hard stuff isn't it? I've found it takes several passes, and yes the taste is "different"...but it'll store many, many years and to me...it beats going without. I totally agree with quality field corn for taste and texture...but there is usually still enough of a moisture content to make most field corn a challenge for long term storage.

I was curious of the same thing Spif. And what load/weight round? My personal issue is simply not using my sights at times when i otta be...

Excellent Dennis. I hope you'll let us know what you think of them. While I readily admit they aren't for everyone, I think it's more a matter of a "sight-use-paradigm shift" than their purported inherent inaccuracy. A buddy on mine put a set on his Glock 19 a bit after I put my set on my 17. He & I have both shot a couple of IDPA matches with them, as well shooting some 6" steel at 20 yards...no great feat...but not hard to get decent hits at a bit of distance. And at close range...bad breath to 10 yards?... Just put the big old dot where you want the round to go and press. I'm not 100% sold on them as the greatest thing since sliced bread, and plan to shoot some USPSA matches with them, as well as continue to do some practice and training with 'em. But so far I'm like them. I'm looking forward to your impressions of them.

I have a set of 24/7 Big Dots I put on my Glock 17 a short while ago. It took all of 15 minutes, and I'm no mechanical genius in any way, shape, form, or fashion. I have less than 600 round behind them, but shot an IDPA Match last weekend with the Big Dot 17 and was quite pleased. They'll be going on my 19 & 26 in the future. Good Luck.

Great story Dennis! Man, I hate you had trouble locating a smitty to change your sights. I had no idea that it would be a hassle with a Kimber. It only took me about 15 minutes to put a set of Big Dot 24/7's on my Glock 17. fwiw...I shot it/them in the ORSA IDPA Match last Saturday and was very pleased with the sights. GP 100's are a mixture of Beauty & Beast...look great, feel great, and tough as nails. Let us know when you "spring her".

After following this thread for awhile, I decided to check in my local WalMart (Turkey Creek) today. They had a fair amount of high dollar DPX rounds, but virtually no target 9mm, .40 S&W, of 45 acp. They also had plenty of hunting rifle rounds...but no bulk .223 or 7.62x39. Thankfully I reload, and plan to...make that need to...learn to cast. I also plan to make it to the next Knoxville show and purchase more components from David. Most of the online vendors I've checked are hit & miss. Especially in regards to components. There's plenty of steel cased ammo out there...for now anyway. Here we go again...

Excellent suggestion. I've taken this class with Andy (and a few others) and it made a dramatic improvement in my understanding of the mechanics...and I had taken quite a few other courses with other trainers prior to SSS. book link. The book is a bargain and well worth having. I've read it more than once in the last 10 years. I also 2nd the suggestion for a .22. It's a great caliber and perfect for developing the basic, and for maintaining your shooting skills at an affordable price. link to "Handgun Target Analysis Guide" For future reference, or if you just get the notion, I would highly recommend Tom Given's and his facility Rangemaster in Memphis. Tom is a gentleman, great guy, and excellent instructor. He may also be a good person to contact for someone that may be able to help in your area.

Sorry. I was unclear. No. I have/use an IWB for appendix carry, adjustable for angle. Excellent concealment. I jut meant that Mike is a talented guy and would work with someone on coming up with a sheath that meets their needs. I agree, Mike's work is excellent.

Good thing they weren't far enough away to need sights my friend. I would have been in trouble. LOL
