Good SHTF Survival Fiction Books
Jamie Jackson replied to plank white's topic in Survival and Preparedness
Absolutely. I own and read all of the books I've listed above. The Road is excellent, very dark...but I've read all of Cormac McCarthy's book and he is a dark SOB, rambles like hell, but I like his work. There is no good or bad with him...there simply "is". :2cents: -

No hijacking intended, but here's a few Gun-centric books I own and would recommend: Firearms & Self Defense: “Surgical Speed Shooting†by Andy Stanford “Terror at Beslan†by John Giduck. “In the Gravest Extreme: The Role of the Firearm in Personal Protection†by Massad F. Ayoob. “Guns, Bullets, and Gunfights: Lessons and Tales from a Modern Day Gunfighter†by Jim Cirllo. “Kill or Get Killed†by Col. Rex Applegate “No Second Place Winner†by Bill Jordan. “To Ride, Shoot Straight, and Speak the Truth†by Col. Jeff Cooper, USMC (retired). “Another Country†by Col. Jeff Cooper, USMC (retired). “Principles of Personal Defense†by Col. Jeff Cooper. “The Art of War†by Sun Tzu “The Book of the Five Rings (Bushido – The Way of the Warrior) by Miyamoto Musashi “A Rifleman Went to War†by H.W. McBride -

Ain't nuthin' wrong with being a bit crazy...keeps you from going insane. :pleased: Welcome aboard Good Sir. There's great folks more than willing to share their expertise and experiences here... and opinions...

Welcome aboard William, and Thank you for your service to our Nation. Knoxville is a good town and for the most part "gun centric"...lots of gun folks, shooters, and some decent places to shoot. Here's a link or two related to the primary range where I and several area members of TGO shoot and compete. http://orsaonline.org/ http://orsaap.com/ Let us know when you're settled in and we'll do some shooting.

Another option is to go to the GOA (Gun Owners of America) site: http://gunowners.org/ and sign up for their e-mail alerts...red rectangle to the right side of page. Along with their e-mail alerts, you be able to set an an e-mail link to your Congressmen and Senators. I've sent quite a few this way and have received direct replies. I use the links posted above as well and try to keep the pressure on 'em. We all need to let them know we're here, we vote, and we've had enough loss of Liberty. :2cents:

An unlikely Long Term Food Storage resource
Jamie Jackson replied to Jamie Jackson's topic in Survival and Preparedness
LOL. I hear ya Lester. Some of the LTS foods are much better than others. I appreciate companies, like Wise foods, that offered samples initially when they first came out. And also companies that produce the smaller cans, so a person can actually afford to try out the food they are storing. An example: "My Choice" by Emergency Essentials. Gotta get to work... -
I've picked up 400 rounds of 7.62x39 Tula at Turkey Creek Walmart (Knoxville) over the past 3 weeks. It was $4.97 per box. It's a hit and miss, but they seem to still be getting ammo fairly regularly. I didn't see .223 the last trip.

I don't know...the more forbidden the fruit, the greater the desire...at least in certain circumstances. IIRC there have, for a number of years, been junket tours for folks from other countries with totalitarian gun bans to the U.S., primarily for the purpose of shooting and handling those forbidden fruits. God Help Us, I pray we never come to that. But wish you the best in getting your business up and going.

LOL, Great points Sir. While being an old fart, such as I am, and an old Corpsman, I never did the "cool guy" stuff while on Active Duty...then, like now, I was "working for a living"... I don't own any cool guy gear and don't feel my life is incomplete. I do carry daily, and have for a mighty long time. I compete with my carry gear, I practice and train with my EDC gear, and dress in the same snazzy fashion each and every day...jeans and T-Shirt with the occasional sweat shirt. I am not "tacti-cool". The thing that I admire about instructors I've had in the past, like Givens, Farnam, and SouthNarc, is that they train the average joe to do what is necessary within the confines of reality. I don't begrudge anyone going to "gun camp". Heck, I bet it's fun...albeit expensive. I'll just keep trudging along. But I sure would like to train with this guy!

An unlikely Long Term Food Storage resource
Jamie Jackson replied to Jamie Jackson's topic in Survival and Preparedness
Lester; It sounds like to have a very good setup. Rotation, along with continual additions is what we do as well. Our setup is very similar to yours. We have an upstairs pantry with multiple shelves. and have several buckets with the gamma seal lids that hold various rice, legumes, flour, sugar, etc. along it's floor/wall under the shelves. Our basement pantry has multiple shelving units for our intermediate-storage items...home canned foods, store bought canned goods, toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning products etc. and a couple ( :ugh: ) of 5 gallon buckets of Mylar/o2 absorber LTS foods. And of course a few cases of LDS "starter kits". I pressure canned 7 quarts and 8 pints of boneless turkey from one of our freezers yesterday (3 turkeys we bought on sale back over Thanksgiving)...that's why I'm so long in replying. We always try an consider variety for our storage and our diets. That's one of the main reason we purchase freeze dried fruits. They aren't my first choice in fruits, but they'll help with the monotony of each the same thing daily...food fatigue can be a serious issue, as you brought up. We also store various freeze dried goods and some MRE's...they all have their place in the overall scheme of things. And it's not for just an "End of the world" scenario. Over the past few years, related to a protracted family illness, we've had to "shop" in our pantry for a couple of months because money got really tight. I feel/felt very Blessed that we had the storage in place. I hadn't heard of Perma Pak before...so you piqued my interest. Is this it? Apparently a company called the food guys are a distributor for Perma Pak. Being a "gun guy" I too have focused on that aspect of my preps over the past few months. I can't do much about the firearm product insanity at the moment...so I'm trying to refocus my energies towards other aspects of my preps...like my food storage....and you know what? It won't be too long from now and I'll be starting seeds for the garden. There's always something to do... :pleased: -
An unlikely Long Term Food Storage resource
Jamie Jackson replied to Jamie Jackson's topic in Survival and Preparedness
Lester. You're welcome Sir. As far as I know, Augason Frams is still located in Salt Lake City, or thereabouts. I prefer to pick my individuals storage items as well. You know the old adage: "Store what you eat and eat what you store". I recently ordered a bucket of their rolled oats and some of the banana slices you mentioned. I eat oatmeal with dried fruit almost every day..it's a fast and easy breakfast as I work 12 hour shifts... Augason Farms, I believe, started with their milk alternative, Morning Moos. We store Nido Powdered milk ourselves and use it frequently. Primarily in cooking and or baking. Good stuff! While the majority of our Long Term Storage(LTS) foods are thing we pack ourselves with Mylar/o2 absorbers and place into buckets...there is a certain advantage and ease to picking up some prepackaged buckets like the Augason Farms rice or rolled oats. It's already done for ya. :pleased: We also purchase the LDS Starter Kits in #10 cans for LTS. It's affordable quality and the shipping has been free thus far. I can't see prices on anything coming down...what with the incompetency in Washington, Quantitative Easing "forever" , and the rest of the Bravo Sierra occurring... It's good to have options my Friend. -

You're welcome folks. I understand the sentiment about Walmart. Many folks share it....But it's an affordable food storage option. I have no qualm about purchasing reasonably priced ammo from them as well. There's some decent folks working at my local Walmart. -
Oh Heck... Welcome back to Brad and Brian! A brother to my brother is my buddy...even if he is a Glock hater!
-
LOL I am always happy to entertain my Brother. Heck, I might even clean my Glock this year...maybe... :pleased: Now you know Spiffy would never say anything to jinx himself. I hear ya Buddy. I haven't had any problems with Kahn mags until today, wouldn't you know it? But at least I've figured out a way to make Glocks double feed in order to get the malfunction clearance practice...only I shouldn't actually do it during a match. LOL.
-
LOL, This old guy appreciated the sit-down time. :pleased: Great match Folks. Good people and good stages. And I had a chance to practice my double feed malfunction drills! What more could a fella want? In all seriousness, Thanks to the S.O.'s and my fellow shooters for a great day.

Just a head's up for folks that are unaware. Walmart.com, of all places, carries Augason Farms LTS foods, and the shipping is free with orders over $50.00. You can combine any "home free" listed items to meet the $50.00 requirement. For me this has worked out cheaper than ordering directly from Augason Farms. I know money is tight for everyone these days, so I hope this will help some of you folks out.

What do pocket holsters do you use?
Jamie Jackson replied to Jon in TN's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I've used a Mika's pocket holster for a number of years. Affordable quality, imho. I had a Kramer horsehide holster, excellent holster btw, but Gomez talked me out of it years ago. I was happy to give it to him. He's missed. -
Brad and I are planning on being there. My schedule finally rotated back so I can attend. It's been so long I gotta remember which way the bullets go in the magazines! :ugh: Yeah Brasil...lots of seated starts...what's up with that? :pleased:

Who's drying (dehydrating) food?
Jamie Jackson replied to Mark A's topic in Survival and Preparedness
That should work just as well Mark. I simply don't have an attachment for that with my old Black and Decker sealer. You should be good to go my Friend. I think you'll see a great benefit in your food storage endeavors with a good dehydrator. -

Various recipes: http://www.dehydrate2store.com/recipes/ http://www.backpackingchef.com/dehydrating-fruit.html http://feedyourskull.com/2012/11/10/banana-chocolate-cherry-trail-mix-clusters/  edited because I'm a technotard... -
I realize this may be a bit late, but the offer is still available. I gave a couple of subscriptions to Back Woods Home magazine to some family and friends. I have subscribed to BHM for several years and frequently refer to past articles for information and ideas. imho it's one of the best magazines for Self Sufficiency and Self Reliance / Homesteading…and a true value in this day and age. Helping others on the road to self sufficiency will benefit us all.
