  1. Quick reminder that this one is coming up in about 3 weeks!
  2. There's really 2 different questions here. "What accuracy standards are we training to be able to achieve?"... and ..."what accuracy standard do we train with to achieve that?". For me personally (and professionally) we try to direct everything into the diaphragm to neck area (nipple to neck triangle) and/or the face (eyebrow to nose triangle) and that runs the complete circumference of the target ....front, back, sides. Those are vital zones and areas most likely to MAKE people stop what they are doing....not just hurt them and leave the decision to stop up to them. I'm not at all saying other areas don't hurt...I'm saying all we know about anatomy and biology leads us to those two areas being the most likely to stop people. As to standards to practice? I like smaller targets. The 3" shoot n see" targets are what I normally use in class as the "optimum" with an 8.5x11" sheet of paper behind it as "still acceptable". By using that we focus on a smaller area and are then most likely to keep even our "misses" in the vital zone area or at a minimum in the torso / minus 1 zone on an IDPA target or C zone of an IPSC target. In my own practice I personally use the pasters from the "shoot n see" targets as my target to aim for and anything within a hand span of that is acceptable which gives about a 3/4" target and a 6" Acceptable Zone. For distance (15yds to 50yds or farther?) I use a 45% IPSC steel target which pretty much covers diaphragm to neck or chin and inside the nipples on most people. By shooting smaller targets you get a better grasp of sight alignment and trigger control and can apply the same skills to hit at much farther distances. After a day of shooting at 3" targets at 5 yards a torso sized target at 25 is easy.
  3. THIS ONE IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER! Many of us spend a good deal of time in our vehicle sitting in line for the ATM or at stop lights or in parking lots. So it makes sense to be not only prepared to deal with carjacking but to also train for it. This class fills in some of those gaps in training and gives you the opportunity to shoot from your own vehicle so that if you ever do have to do it for real you will not be having to figure it out on the fly. Hope to see you there!
  4. DATE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO APRIL 29-30 !!!!!!!!
  5. ONE week to go! Remember to bring a blue gun (or red or orange or yellow) and training knife if you have them and of course your flashlight . Looking forward to this !
  6. ONE WEEK TO GO KNOXVILLE !
  7. And it is largely due to what choices the particular branches make. The overwhelming majority (like pretty much all) of the military (Army and Marines) M16A2s were SAFE, SEMI and BURST. The original M4 carbine was the same setup with Burst . The M4A1 is SAFE SEMI and AUTO. There are some SOCOM M4A1s that have a 4 position selector with Safe Semi Burst and Auto. The M4 carbines and then the M16A4 that the USMC adopted in the early 2000s is 3rd burst instead of full auto. Probably just a matter of keeping with the line of thinking that Marines are riflemen and the troops will waste less ammo with a burst setting than a full auto setting. But then again that is why the 1903 Springfield had a magazine cutoff also....couldn't have the troops "wasting" 5 whole rounds from the mag..... Frankly I wouldn't worry about it. Rifle caliber Full Auto fire is best delivered by belt fed guns. You use belt feds to keep the enemy heads down and the riflemen then maneuver and pick em off.
  8. CRG-3 ADVANCED GUNFIGHTING JUNE 3-4, 2017 PRICE $350 LEWISBURG, TENNESSEE INSTRUCTOR: RANDY HARRIS Instructor Bio This course is pure shooting at all ranges. We will spend the morning of the first day polishing up our pistol shooting fundamentals and then spend the remainder of the weekend taking our skills to higher levels. This is a physically demanding course that builds upon what you have already trained in other pistol classes. Course material includes methods for increasing speed and accuracy. In this class, we will do some long range shooting . . . like 75 yards and 100 yards! We will teach you to hit at all possible distances. We will also point shoot from belly to belly distance, while ignoring the use of sights both station stationary, on the move and on the run. We will study the various Threat-Focused Point Shooting systems (Point Shooting) as well as Sight-Focused Shooting Systems and their seamless integration and applications in a total Close Range Gunfighting program. We will shoot from field expedient positions (including one handed, behind cover, etc.). We'll examine special problems such as confined area shooting, shooting in crowded environments and other difficult problems. All attendees should have a high level of skill and a reflexive understanding of safety measures. There is little or no lecturing and the majority of the time is trigger time. Come join us in this exciting and cutting edge training event! CLASS AND RANGE DETAILS DURATION: 2 days TIME: 9:00AM to 5:00PM AMMUNITION: Approximately 500 rounds (Minimum) RANGE & GEAR REQUIREMENTS: Modern defensive pistol and a holster specifically made for that pistol and designed to be worn on the belt. Three (3) magazines and magazine pouch, a belt of the same width as the belt loops for the holster and magazine pouches, and range safety gear (eye protection, and ear protection). Also Helpful Bring spare clothing appropriate for the weather, including a hat, sunscreen, and bug repellent. Plan to bring lunch, snacks, and water (min 1 gallon per person) for the entire day unless driving to lunch is a viable option from the range location. Bring allergy medication (if needed), a chair (if you prefer), note taking supplies, and a boo boo kit (band aids, gauze pads, antiseptic wipes, antibiotic ointment and tape). You may wish to bring pads such as knee pads, elbow pads, and gloves if the class lends itself to that. MORE INFO AND TO REGISTER CLICK HERE
  9. That is correct. The M16 3 round burst is not always a 3 rd burst. It could be 3, 2, or 1. The HK MP5 2 and 3 round burst trigger packs work differently and give you the correct number each time. The bigger issue is simply that shooting is rather binary....you can either do it well or not. You can either hit what you aim at or not. If round #1 does not hit then rounds 2 and 3 in that burst are unlikely to hit either. So maybe more time should be spent on actually having the troops out SHOOTING and less on multicultural studies and other such silliness. With a little bit of training time and concentration you can get 2 rd (and sometimes singles) off with the selector set on AUTO on an M16. I have video from a few years back at a match (VHS tape not digital)) of shooting an 11.5" barrel M16 and I empty a mag firing consecutive 2 rd bursts with the selector set on AUTO....so I know it can be done. On the other hand a lot of guys who know what they are doing just simply leave it on SEMI and fire quick pairs or triples in CQB and precise singles at distance. Not only does this increase the likelihood of more hits and less misses, it keeps folks from burning through ammo as fast (with little to no effect) .
  10. As mentioned before they are "overbuilt" and reliable but due to the high bore axis they do have a little more muzzle flip than some other designs. But as far as guns that can be found at a "good price" the Ruger P series guns are a solid choice. They were very popular back then with folks not looking to spend $500 or more for a Glock or a SW 3rd Gen or a Beretta or Sig. And for folks looking for a perfectly functional hi cap service pistol on a budget today they are still a good economy choice . As to the Ruger P series being a popular choice "back in the day", I went to Prentice Cooper to shoot some on Dec 26 of 1997 and it seems like everyone in that area must have gotten a P89 or a P94 for Christmas because there were like 8 to 10 guys there with brand new P89s or P94s in the box. That was back when the range was essentially a glorified ditch with 2 shooting tables so you had to wait in line to shoot. So you got to see what everyone was shooting. Nice find!
  11. Just a quick reminder for those needing to get started right, or for those looking to fill in gaps in what you already know or to simply shore up skills you need some work on. This class does all those things. It lays the foundation skills you will need, gets your mindset right and teaches you what to look for to identify criminal assault about to occur and gives you physical and verbal skills to hopefully convince the potential bad guy that you are going to be more trouble than you are worth before he makes the decision to attack. For those looking for a great place to learn the fundamental skills of defending yourself with a pistol this is for you. We cover everything from mindset and awareness and dealing with unknown contacts to disrupting your adversary's OODA loop, accessing your pistol and getting fight stopping hits, after action assessments, malfunction clearance, reloading both proactively and reactively, and many more topics.Hope to see you there!
