What is the best hunting/fishing product you own?
Slappy replied to Wiljo05's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
To follow up from Batman...my Petzel Headlamp. -
I posted this in a similar thread: Trying to find a bow can be an overwhelming task. Let me break it down for you... Martin, Bowtech, Diamond, Bear, Matthews, PSE, RedHead, G5, Hoyt, LimbSaver, Mission, Parker...the list goes on. All are very high quality so if someone tells you you should only buy XYZ brand, they dont know what they are talking about. Back in the day, brands did matter but nowadays, not so much. Also, dont get caught up in IBO speed. The faster bows get, usually the less comfortable they are to shoot. IBO speeds also only factor in the lightest acceptable arrow weights (heavier weights are better for hunting/penetration) and the heaviest draw weight with the longest draw length...that criteria may only work for 1% of the population. Also, the faster the IBO speed, the more expensive the bow. I would target IBO speeds anywhere from 300-320 or so. Thats plenty fast and they wont beat you to death either. So, do yourself a BIG favor and go to a local archery shop. Not a big box store but an actually archery shop. The first thing they will do is measure your draw length. The next thing they should do, is pick out a few bows for you, adjust them and let you shoot them. Dont be surprised if you get tired quickly. Bow shooting requires muscles that even the strongest dont typically use! Pick the bow that is comfortable and you shoot the best. Also, try and pay some attention to how quiet the bow is. The reason why is because sound travels faster than an arrow does. Deer sometimes will "jump the string" meaning the crouch down a few inches in a split second and you often times will shoot over their backs. The more quiet the bow is, the less likely the deer will be to jump the string. Don't be too concerned with it either because there are TONS of aftermarket accessories to quiet a bow. When it comes to budget, the bow is just the first expense. Then you will need arrows, field tips, broad heads, a case, a release and a target. Thats assuming the bow you buy is Ready To Hunt (RTH). It is an AWESOME sport and there is no bigger rush than having an animal within bow range. Stick with it, practice shooting for your tree stand because its different than shooting from the ground. Do NOT get discouraged if you miss a deer. One only needs to watch an afternoon of the Outdoor Channel to figure out that even the best of hunters still miss from time to time. You may also want to purchase a range finder and that will help your hunting greatly. Don't be afraid to buy a used bow as well! There are so many junkies out there that have to have the latest and greatest and will hunt with a bow for 2-3 seasons and then buy the next one. An archery shop will make sure the bow is in good condition and safe. That will help you save a lot of money as well! I hunted the last 10 seasons with an 2001 Martin Cougar Magnum IBO speed of 315. Back in 01/02, that was one of the most advanced bows made. Now, I have "upgraded" to a Bear Legion with an IBO speed of 318...so like I said, just because a bow is old/used, doesn't mean its inferior. Good luck finding a bow! Keep us updated and post pics when you find one.

Wow, hard to narrow it down! My list would be what has been mentioned above, but I will add my Nikon Monarch 5 Binoculars. Those have been fantastic. -
I guess I have been a better son and son-in-law than I thought this year! My dad and FIL have conspired to get me a much needed gun safe for my birthday. I think I can get the delivery taken care of (I'm sure loading it on a trailer would be fine, its like 450lbs) but I would like someone who knows what they are doing to secure it to my foundation when it reaches its final resting place. Does anyone have any recommendations of safe installers in Memphis? Thanks.

I agree to the poster above. I would plant clover in the fall. We are about to plant several acres of clover in a few weeks. We planted cowpeas and sunflowers in mid june, much later than we wanted but they are all about 3 feet tall and the deer LOVE them. Really looking forward to the season myself!

Elmer Fudd could run for the democrats and win. They have figured out how to steal win these elections now.

Awesome! Hunter Safety classes are very informative. Good shootin' too!

That is a terrible thing to name someone, right or wrong...the judge did that kid a favor that will last him a lifetime. I also agree that the judge cant/shouldnt tell someone what to name their child. I dont like the .gov's intrusion in our lives any more than anyone else on this forum, in fact I hate it, but I still know that there is clearly good and bad as well as right and wrong in this world and regardless of how or who made the decision, it is my opinion the outcome of this is correct for the sake of this kid. Imagine trying to find a job when your name is ####ake (looks like we have auto editing now its a type of mushroom that starts with an Shi*), Satan, Knowledge, La-La (pronounced Lah-dash-Lah), Blue Ivy, the symbol "@", North West, and yes, Messiah. Yes those are all real names too. Flame me if you want. My hypocrisy is strong and I completely understand.

lol, nice witty retort!

I will be sure to remember that when I win that rifle! Thanks man!!

Know where I can register to win new magpul furniture also? haha

Man that looks good. I have a family farm I intend to plant an orchard in. Hopefully they produce fruit eventually!

LSU by far. Home and away they are jerks.

That's a good analogy. I feel the same. I really like them all.

Fun stuff! Was that a gopro camera you used?

I enjoy a nice cigar every once in a while. I have tried many and my "go to" is an Artuero Fuente Hemmigway (the AF Don Carlos is also worth a shot). I have tried two AF Opus X's and although a mighty fine cigar, it whips my tail! I can't smoke them. Romero and Julietta have a cigar that's number 3 on CA's top 25 list. It's fantastic. Also, if you can get your hands on one made by Drew Estate called Liga Privada No. 9, that is one of the finest cigars made today. For the occasional sweet cigar desire, ACID's are top of the line!! Each has its one unique infused flavor. A lot of cigar afficianodos say sweet and cigars should never mix...that's their loss because it is fantastic.

Not really sure about depreciation. The one we purchased was a demo model so we got a bit of a discount on it. Only had like 5 hours on it. It has been a great machine and worth it's weight in gold. I didn't realize how helpful it was going to be until we got it. Has excellent 4x4 capabilities and the power steering is really nice. It's been said it will go 50+mph but I have no desire to test that.

I also use a Polaris Ranger (800). The thing is a work horse. The bed will hold 1,000lbs which is nice when spreading lime on the fields and it will tow 2,000lbs which is nice when needing to drag implements or pull stumps. Fantastic peice if machinery and we have not had any problems with it.

If its a good as he says it is....and it's so easy to switch the frame out...then why doesn't he replace the frame himself? Heck, even if he just didnt want the glock anymore, he should have replaced the frame before he tried to sell it. That pistol is unsafe and disgusting.

The diamond in the rough around here is Graceland. It really is fantastic! Don't get your hopes up on seeing his bedroom or the toilet he died on because they don't show that. Elvis never let any guest upstairs so they have continued his wish. Even if you could care less about Elvis it will help you appreciate the road he paved for all the other rock and roll musicians out there. Other things worth visiting...Pickwick Lake, National Bird Dog Museum, Shiloh and pretty much any State Park. Edit: Also the Gibson Guitar Factory Tour is awesome.

I do agree that things are lining up for the cataclysmic disaster. Of course, it's been that way since sin entered the world, but it certainly seems the foot is on the accelorator now more than ever.

What they call a bigot...I call someone with morals. I am young (comparativly speaking) and I am in shock at how fast morals are declining and how those without morals are not only praised but exuberantly praised. Look at the way our children are treated. They have to fight for their life before they are even born. The current people that are in charge right now are not just a problem but more scary, the result of the problem. If you fall into a certain category with the first criteria being you vote conservatively, you are not just the opposition but the enemy too.

Nice bass! Although that body is awfully small for the mouth size. Looks like the area you were fishing is over populated.
