Flashbacks are the only way to bring back original characters who are now dead and keep them on the show. And there are still several major holes, like the 7-8 months between the last episode of season 2 and where they were at in the first episode of season 3.

Shane should have hooked up with Andrea,whether he stayed or left. He was off base for chasingvRick's family after Rick came back. Andrea was single, hotter and less whiney.

I am happy with myself and what I have, I am not jealous of other people. They worked for what they have, I worked for what I have. Many people would consider me to be "rich", while many people would not. It's all relative, mostly based on perception.
