  1. Y'all may not have noticed the story or follow the links that discussed the history. The last 10 years its been a drone training facility, before that there wasnt an airfield or roads to link the cleared areas where they added buildings. If you look at the satellite image you can see how they spoked out. The linked roads were to both working sites and mock building structures (stacked storage containers) that drone pilots in training would take practice runs on. May well have been owned by paper companies years before, but probably just forested area. Looks like it hasnt been stripped for quite some time. Wish all acreage was that cheap! Great for hunting, but man would it be expensive to develop. Historical info indicted the base power was supplied by on-site generators, that I guess they did not leave behind. Not for a paltry 9 million. "https://www.google.com/maps/@35.1760093,-88.0220308,3694m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!7m1!2e1"
  2. Merry Christmas all. May your hearts be full and stockings heavy.
  3. the price is posted in the link. Its on sale! I dont think you have to win the lotto, from Davids posted pics of toys, I am sure he'll cover the first 8 million or so. Decided military style lookouts and decor. Similar to the towers they put up around hardended ordinance bunkers on bases. No fuel tanks, so great thing is no messy toxic clean up. Not form that anyway.
  4. So equally too far away from everywhere. Both good and bad?
  5. Ok, now you're just showing off. Once you get a shooter like that, you'd never want to get rid of it. I remember when CDNN was liquidating the SAR's...looks like the buyers showed just how smart they were about appreciating those gems.
  6. It would be polarizing. Folks appreciating the execution and work vs having a coronary about seeing an Imbel with holes drilled in it.
  7. If you are looking at the conversion bolt mentioned, they do work. Last time I fired one was in the early 80's in an M16 on an air force base range the few years uncle sam was using them. They havent changed since them.
  8. Some mad skills. I am sure your SAR48 is now pretty much second class with that uber optic setup on frankenFL. I would be more than happy to give that poor SAR a home so it does not feel neglected.
  9. Reminiscing is tough. I think the thing gets me about current things we pass on, is asking if we learned anything from regrets of the past. Some of these things in the past seemed common and inexpensive, making them less of a bad decision in the moment. Time changed that. Its those things we know at the time, I'm going to regret this if I don't do it. With looking back, 2 things always come to mind. The main west coast surplus dealer of M1 carbines had a retail storefront in my town thru the 80's. He kept three 55 gallon barrels full of M1 carbines, with most being in pretty nice shape. Several times I went in during lunch and picked thru and set 1 or 2 to the side intending to come back when they went on sale for $79. I just didnt want to spend the full $89 to $99 for one of them and they went on sale often enough. But never made it a priority when the day would come. 20 year old me just thought they'd be around forever since they had them in the thousands. Today I dont have a real excuse other than it wasnt cheap. But unless they get banned, no way it would go down in value. 30+ years later I guess I have not learned much.
  10. Now see, you shouldnt let folks know that...or they will come! I thought it was inflated everywhere, but now I know where to look given Knoxville's outskirts are getting slammed. Don't worry, I'll fix it yet. FWIW, I have not contributed to the artificial inflation. I refuse to pay current scalping prices. Problem was it took me 3 years of non stop working on the wife to get her to agree to move from liberal central and it was to late to beat the insanity. So we are renting waiting for a good correction. Hate burning a pile of money every month. Sounds like we all want to see that day come soon!
  11. That's pretty much our setup and had the same realization. And I suspect that savings will decrease going forward as alternative service providers rates are showing a bit of upward creep. In the end, being able to toggle services on and off may be the only benefit provided they dont start adding contracts (if they feel they have enough market share)
  12. Hey now..... Just think what they (we?) have done for your property values. If its any consolation, its just as painful to us. I think you should be suspicious of anyone who lives in Nashville. If you want to be in the big city, you might really be one of them, they just havent found the pods yet. How nice would it be if their was criteria. Such as prior Southern state residence and family being a requisite. And should have political motivation, not just financial. One can dream.
  13. Wow. I love learning about things I was clueless about. That is some serious kit that you folks are into. I don't think I could ever get something that serious as it would take away all my usual excuses.
  14. Most of the hitch on Gen 3 smiths is their firing pin block safety letting you know its there. The parts tend to be roughly machined and they have a generous spring rate. They will inprove with use, but removing the block, alternate spring if you can find it and polishing will pretty much make that go away. As this is not a new gun, you may want to also get a new recoil spring so you have a known baseline given it had failure to battery. Being dirty makes it worse of course, but its cheap and the symptom suggests its prudent on a new to you gun.
  15. I've picked up several conversion kits along the way, subscribing to that philosophy of training. It really helps with getting you to recognize lapses in trigger discipline, especially if you have any anticipation or flinch with the full boat rounds when you have not been keeping current. I've got a couple Sig 1911 kits (they work on all standard 1911's), P229, Glock large frame, and Beretta 92. As with the Glock thread, I dont understand the need for a dedicated 22 pistol unless it brings something else to the party. My only 22 pistol is a Ruger Single 10, because I thought it was interesting and I'd never had a single action wheel gun (need to try to make it free spinning now). I would be inclined to pick up a Ruger Mark IV. Interestingly as much as I loved these early on, I find I almost never use them. I hope if we find a place with some land where I can have my own range, I'll get back to enjoying the pleasures of 22 again.
  16. We hope to get further out when we find what we're looking for. We're luck enough with the little bits of remaining forest we have around us, we get deer thru here a lot more than I expected. Caught this guy a couple months back having a snack across the street.
  17. Come on, someone has to have a recent fishing story
  18. It makes it more real to say out loud. But, a pic they say is worth a thousand words. I have a couple 'real' cut receivers with the go fast switch...and maybe one day if its meant to be it'll be complete like this one....
  19. And it will end up being smaller house than the building plans since part of your loan had to go toward paying for the damn thing.
  20. My last purchase was an HK45CT, but it was to go with its big brother 45 Expert. While they may have differing intended purposes, overtime I have gravitated toward more compacts with barrels around the 4" range. For me, I find them better balanced and comfortable all around shooters (when I am not trying to fit a specific purpose). With typical pistol distances, I don't see a significant sacrifice to accuracy that is due to the average gun itself. Its more shooter discipline and training with shorter sight radius or site types. Alot of folks they are quick to equate full size with more accuracy over smaller versions before considering or adjusting for difference due to features, so it may not be an apples to apples comparison. An inch more barrel doesn't mean much on its own. I think its fair to say "full size" are easier to shoot for most casual situations. Sight radius and reduced flip reducing your having to pay attention or being in practice. That said, for me to consider a full size now, it should have a purpose and be more geared toward competition or accuracy, otherwise it's just wasting steel.
  21. I so relate to that! Its a malady in search of a support group. Problem here is that it seems to feed the addiction.
  22. Mine was a few hours ago. Working thru the rationalization still. I did not buy an original select fire rifle that was NIB. I agonized for for nearly 2 hours over buying or not buying. Price was actually pretty reasonable, though not inexpensive. The last 10 minutes on GB, entered my bid in the box...and no less than 6 times hovered on the bid button. Held back each time by all the reasons I concocted not to. Now I'm rationalizing the non practical aspects and that it was not the actual military version I really would want. Countered with I'll never see one NIB again, made more rare by only 450 having been original select fire guns. The military variant aspect is offset by knowing it would be quite a bit more, which makes its eventual selling price seem like a deal in today's market. At the moment, the remorse over not getting something of a rarity is overwhelming the relief of not spending such a big nut a single gun that I know would not get run full auto much. The seller has my contact info, I asked him to let me know if the buyer does not follow up, though I know that wont probably happen. Hope your regrets pass quickly. Or better yet, you avoid them all together!
  23. Thanks for the follow-up. Glad to hear it was good for you out of the box. I am glad to see Beretta keeping life in the 92 series. And even after all this time, that new items come to to the aftermarket for them. The LTT bar adds some material to the trigger stop and it effects range. All of which I found postive. Having played with all the standard mods over the years, its the first one that I thought, wow. For a $70 part, I'd recommend any Beretta fan to try it at some point. There was a vid out there showing reset, and in trying to find that I ran across a new one where a comparison to the performance S trigger (they appear to offer that as an upgrade part now) was done. Thought you may find interesting. It too shows the effective reset so you can see if its something that appeals to you.
  24. Which is why they ain't getting my money. But as you say that, from what I'm guessing is a dislike of the Austrian polymer wonder, you may be forgetting that when they came out they were the innovators with high capacity in a small package as a main selling feature. I find that last bit the ultimate and most failing irony in their lost in the crowd offering. They seem to have forgotten what brought them to the party me thinks.
  25. And why sell only 3 mags when you can get them to buy 5 for that box of 50 !
