  1. The whole contractor thing seems like a pretty raw deal. Not knocking you at all, but the FDX Ground guys around here don't seem to "get it."
  2. If going overnight, it will pass through fewer destinations, and thus, fewer hands. Also, it will sit around less, as in waiting for a sort to begin. Overnight offers fewer opportunities for the package to get misplaced, stolen, damaged, or the label torn off. As for hiring honest people, UPS/FedEx are lucky to get people that actually show up to work five days a week, much less be honest.
  3. Maybe the person you handed it to. UPS/FedEx both reserve the right to open any package. Customer Counter person opens it, finds a handgun? Doubt you'll get it back, but you may get a free extended stay at the crossbar hotel.
  4. On the other hand, there's no guarantee that you'll get your stuff back, either.

  6. Most frames/receivers have serial numbers.
  7. I think garethsk was referring to the perceived implication that something WOULD happen to 700's account. Not a very smart play on 700's part, though.
  8. If you ship a frame, you are shipping a gun, as far as the BATFE is concerned.
  9. A free detail strip class for alumni? That is pretty cool.
  10. +1 Take a full weekend class--you'll be able to "take home" and practice what you learned. Not sure where you live, but Tom Givens may be worth the drive. Like gsbell, I recommend him, too.

    Kimber or SA?

Nobody, but you stated that Kimber's two problem areas are Schwartz safeties and external extractors, and that you had never seen Series I gun act up. Many think that Series I=internal and Series II=external. Your post could lead some to believe this is true. I know what you mean, and you know what you mean, but some may read into your post too much.

    Kimber or SA?

But, not all Series II guns have external extractors. Many assume that they do.

    Kimber or SA?

Mine was a new Compact CDP II BUT it had an internal extractor. Most blame the external extractors, but mine was internal. I got it 3 or 3.5 years ago. Kimber shipped the gun w/ a magazine follower for use in steel frame guns only. A guy posted on 1911.org that certain followers would chew up the frames of alloy guns. When mine had only 200-300 rounds I checked it and sure enough, it looked like a mouse had been chewing it just below the feed ramp. I was stunned. Aftermarket followers ended the frame gouging, but didn't help the feeding problems. Also, magazines would not drop free. I put an aftermarket mag release in, and it was cured. Ahhh, a minor tooling fault 1911 fans told me--it can be fixed w/ a dremel tool. Sorry, but having to dremel parts on a $1000 gun to make it perform a basic function is a travesty. Piss poor quality control. The gun was a one-hole tachdriver...when it shot. FTEs, FTFs stovepipes, feedway malfunctions, you name it, randomly, with no rhyme or reason. Tried different mags, different ammo, different recoil springs, a 1911 whisperer tuned the extractor, and just about the time I would get 30 or 40 rounds through it and start thinking it was running ok, it would bobble another one. I hated that gun. Not long after I got rid of it, I started shooting IDPA, and found that I wasn't the only one who hated Kimbers. Locally, there is a running joke about getting a Kimber in order to get better at tap-rack-bang drills. Buyer beware. Look at DW or STI.

My Kimber Compact CDP was the biggest waste of $1000 ever...made me gunshy about any 1911 for a while.
  15. Saw some at Bass Pro Shops not long ago, not sure if they have any left. I believe I saw Winchester and Hornady SPs in boxes of 20.
  16. Actually Southaven is delivered out of one of the Memphis hubs. Your package got missorted to Jackson, MS the first time it came through Memphis.

Have you checked out STI? I shoot a lot of IDPA, and running and gunning tends to expose less than reliable guns. STI dominates all other 1911s in reliability (obviously not a scientific study involved, but I have watched lots of 1911 shooters). I'm thinking about getting a 1911 soon, and STI's Trojan can easily be found for under $1000. Check their website: STI International, Inc.
  18. This would be fun to see. Back before Rangemaster was Rangemaster, it was a place called the Supreme Court. I used to play there sometimes--screwed up my shoulder pretty good. I once watched a tournament of semi-pro players and was amazed. The guy who won it was a total lardass--it was hilarious watching some ripped-up pro athlete run around like a madman while the fat guy hit would hit each shot with sniper-like precision. That guy was unbelievable.
  19. except .50 BMG.
  20. I have the Howard Leights and love them. I won a pair of Peltor T6 muffs last weekend at a match, and the Howard Leights blow them away. Sound quality and volume are better, and one button turns them on and off, as opposed to one on each side on the Peltors. Also, like someone above said, the batteries are a pain to change on the Peltors. If you have more sensitive ears, neither are top-notch for indoor shooting with guns > 9mm or .40.
  21. Today, I tried this with my Glock 34 (w/ 13 lb. recoil spring). I could get the slide about halfway back. If the dude claims that the gun is stock, I have no reason to doubt him. Like everything else, there's some practiced technique involved, I'm sure.
