How to ship a firearm for service?
deerslayer replied to billyblazes's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
…but UPS apparently no longer allows you to even do that So F the guy who wants to legitimately send his gun to an FFL holder to get it ceracoated, milled for a dot, get a trigger job, etc. Not to mention what this does to Gunbroker. Being a gunowner is not getting easier. -

Hmmmmmmmmmmm So it appears that there has been a major change in the field of firearms shipping. Fedex still apparently allows Johnny Gunowner to ship a gun to a manufacturer for warranty service, etc. i did so a month ago, same scenario as what Erik88 described. -
How to ship a firearm for service?

The last time I shipped anything, UPS and Fedex required that the sender or the receiver be an FFL (one or the other). Otherwise, returning something to Smith & Wesson, Ruger, etc for service would be all but impossible. Where are you getting your information? -
I'm good

CZ Custom's RDS red dot mounting system uses plates that slide into a groove they mill into the slide and IT AIN'T GOING NOWHERE. Even though RDS uses a plate, it mounts the dot LOW. I have an SP-01 with a DPP (a relatively tall dot), and it's so low I can use a standard front sight through the glass. Of course, it does Glock shooters no good lol
-
I like it, especially those bigger-than-typical mounting screws.
-
That's pretty interesting. How do they address the different mounting posts/slots that some dots use? I don't think they are a huge deal, but they do theoretically help secure the dot.
-
$300 to get a slide milled for a dot is outrageous. Are they also refinishing the entire slide? Has SS changed the design and function of the Glock trigger (like Timney did)? If not, for $30 and an hour of time, you change the connector and striker spring and polish a couple areas and get results similar to what the $200 aftermarket triggers offer. This is mostly what they are doing.
-
Again, I’m not well versed on SS. How do you mount different footprints without plates? Do they offer multiple slides pre-cut for different optics? I’m aware of the benefits and disadvantages of miiled vs plate (one less failure point/lower mounting vs being married to a certain footprint). I have both. Milling a slide is not particularly expensive; the last time I looked into it, it was going to cost me around $150 for a G17, but I would save $50 or so by not needing an MOS gun. Sending a Glock to Taran Tactical to get the frame undercut and re-textured will be expensive, but most can find a local guy if they try and save a ton of money. Better yet, many just do it themselves. Holosun makes some lower red dots and some eliminate the need for the taller sights. In fact, they now make dots that mount directly to an MOS slide without a plate. I’m not calling anybody’s baby ugly, but I just don’t yet see the value in SS guns unless somebody is looking for certain cosmetic features.

Ergonomics are purely subjective (some actually prefer the Glock grip angle) and tighter tolerances on a polymer frame gun sounds like more marketing gimmicks. What specific upgrades will save a buyer money?

Early 90s Honda 300 4x4 is the greatest internal combustion powered vehicle ever made.
-
What's wrong with the MOS cut? Their plate sucks but is easily fixed with a C&H Precision plate. Their triggers are easily improved for $25 or $30. I admit I'm not that familiar with Shadow Systems guns, but what do they offer as a useful improvement? Mainly all I care about are competition gamer guns and carry guns, but it seems that Shadow is popular among those who like to Gucci-fy their guns or make them look like something from John Wick. I've never understood why they're worth the extra money.

Having a handicap tag in Memphis is often a fashion statement.

If you don’t have a 1200 lumen light mounted on the rail of your carry gun, you are some sort of Fudd who is too incompetent to defend yourself. And we can’t even print what you are if you bought a carry gun with no rail.

Probably celebrating her recent re-election. Not to ruin morale or anything, but we have a friend who was in your situation, printed her receipt, got pulled over for expired tags, and still got ticketed. Someday I will leave Shelby County.

I haven’t noticed the lawful concealed carry signs at Lowes, but I have seen the gunbuster signs. I always put them in redneck layaway.

HELP ME UNDERSTAND.....PLEASE
deerslayer replied to JohnSutton1980's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
I have quite a bit of experience with dot guns and feel the advantages they offer CCW types are a little exaggerated. They are quite useful for some. Arms getting too short and the front sight is harder to use? Try a dot. Worried about making a rushed headshot on an active shooter 50 yards away? A red dot will improve your odds. They are somewhat easier to use in low/no light. Other than that, ho-hum. From my experience, they are offer no more speed or accuracy inside 8-10 yards, where probably 95% of defensive shooting occurs. Much of the supposed advantage of dots is based on misconceptions about irons. The rear sight is not nearly as critical as some make it out to be. A three dot setup presents a cluttered-up sight picture that makes aiming slower and more complicated. A plain black rear sight with a fairly wide notch makes the process much more straightforward. Most iron sight shooting does not require one to focus on the front sight. In fact, all the rage in the action pistol competitive shooting world lately is the realization that many iron sight shooters can get away with focusing on the target all the time at nearly any range. This is blasphemy to some, but it is being trained and taught by the some of the best draw-and-shoot-the-target-several-times-quick/fast/in a hurry shooters in the world. This does not mean they are not using the front sight. Col. Cooper would probably roll over in his grave, but you can’t argue with results. Go get a red dot. They are neat and fun. They are a lot more reliable than they used to be. But the predictions about the soon-to-be extinction of iron sights are a bit premature. -
I had an extremely mild case of covid two or three months ago and I can 100% guarantee you the shot didn’t make it milder. I don’t know and have not heard anyone getting joy from a vaccinated person testing positive. I have witnessed the opposite, however. For the unvaccinated, it is quite ironic when those who got all their shots lecture us and wanted (still want?) to remove us from society still get the virus. Which brings us to the riddle the Faucists have never answered - if you get the shot and the shot protects you, why do you care if somebody doesn’t get the shot?
-
But the shots helped them have a milder case!

The problem with woke type people is they are often not debating morals or values. They are debating truths. "A man should be able to marry a man" is a completely different animal from "A man can have babies."

Victimhood is apparently much more appealing than it used to be.

Yes.

Work used to occasionally require me to ride around in the lousiest neighborhoods Memphis has to offer. It did not require me to do so in a red Miata with the top down blaring Leonard Skynard, but I did it anyway.
