It's a little trouble to get to, but worth the effort, IMO. Duane Thomas wrote this article in the November edition of the Blue Press (Dillon's monthly catalog/magazine). I'm not trying to revive the recent dead-horse thread about how IDPA can get you killed, but this article addresses some of the issues in that thread. When he refers to frequent participation in combat pistol matches as "training," I cringed a little. However, I don' think Thomas meant that competition should substitute for actual training; I think he meant for it to maintain skills and techniques learned in training. Just my $.02. Tungsten, beware--I have Sevigny Competition sights on my G34, and they WILL RUST. I keep a light coat of oil on them, and they do ok. Love 'em otherwise.

G34 owner here, and I love it. Mine is stock, except for a set of plain black Sevigny Competition sights (which many use on carry guns). Sights and all, I believe I have about $680 in it (new). When I'm not shooting IDPA matches, my favorite thing to do with it is shooting steel silhouette targets at 55 yards. Be warned--your 19 and 26 may feel neglected.

I'm not as tough as you--my curls are only a 1/4 pound each.

Manchester video is up. I am in about half the videos, and am the lefty with the green vest and desert camo pants. Memphis Mechanic is the blond guy w/ black sleeves and no hat. It wasn't my best effort, but I was happy to still take home a plaque. Watch stage 10 for one of my world-class four second reloads. I shoved the mag in crooked, it bounced out, I tried again and body-slammed the mag. Oops. On stage 15, I do my Leaning Tower of Pisa imitation. And on 16, I should have gotten a procedural (which would not have made any difference in final standings), and I believe I had a shooter-induced malfunction. Here's the notorious group of Memphis IDPA shooters who went to the TN State Championship in Manchester. We brought home a couple plaques. Even though I had a lousy day, I still managed to take SSP Div. Champ. I guess everybody else in SSP shot like crap, too. It was a pleasure to meet NashvilleBill in person--looking forward to seeing you again at another match. I got a milkshake at Burger King every day last week. This week has been much better, though. About five years ago, I decided to drink a glass of water instead of the coke that I would have had. NO BS, I lost 8 lbs in two weeks. Went from 180 down to 172. Only problem now is, I don't drink that much coke.

LOL, I know the ones you're talking about. I detail strip mine three or four times a year, but the pins don't fall out yet.

(off and on): 5K about three times a week (in the 'hood, not on a treadmill) homemade crossfit-style workout including hitting bag/jumprope/pushups about twice a week (not as intense as a true crossfit though) bicycle now and then I did walk about 5 miles a day at work, but have been in an office setting for about 7 months now, and am up to ~185, which is not a good number for me. I have a fondness for milkshakes and chocolate chip cookies that I am trying to overcome. I'm also trying to be disciplined enough to go to bed early enough to get up early enough to work out or run before getting to work at 7 am, but I often stay up too late on the internet. Go figure.

Malfunctions are one thing; a blown up gun due to a double charge or a bullet set too deeply is another.

I don't know where to start--I've had bullets seated sideways, backwards primers, bullets that collapsed the case mouth because they were seated crooked, various overall lengths out of the same box, cracked cases, cases with part of the case mouth missing, failures to fire, .40s mixed with 9mm. God only knows how old the brass is that they use. One local gunshop used to (and probably still does) give a $2 discount if you brought in the brass from the previous box you bought. Back when I shot SIGs, they never liked the orange box. I used to have a .45 with part of the case mouth missing; if I can find it, I'll post a pic. In my worthless opinion, the stuff is garbage, and I won't put it in any of my guns. To the OP, try Dick's Sporting Goods. They've had Remington UMC 9mm on sale for $7.98/50 for a week and a half now. That's $40/250--cheaper than orange box at most places. .40, .45, and other stuff is on sale too, but I'm not sure of the price. BPS has a worthwhile sale on WWB and UMC once in a while. Worst case, WWB is $18.42/100 at Wal-Mart last time I was there. If you go to the one in Bartlett and buy more than two boxes, a little white-haired curmudgeon with a big beard will say something like, "You must be getting ready to start a war!" I just shake my head at that guy.

OUCH! My worst was my Mossberg 500 w/ pistol grip and 18.5" barrel. I was about 18, weighed about 150 lbs, and my dad's friend bet me lunch I wouldn't shoot one 3" Remington magnum slug one-handed. I took the bet and shot all five. My left hand trembled for three days.

I do spray a little Hoppe's on the Boresnake.

I fieldstrip and clean every 500-1000 rounds. Boresnake the barrel w/ Hoppes, thoroughly clean all edges/surfaces w/ a cotton patch (aka cut up t-shirt), and oil frame rails, connector (Glock), one drop inside top of slide, and a couple drops spread 360 degrees around the outside of the barrel an inch or two from the bore. About two or three times a year, I will completely detail strip and scrub everything. Edited to add: I shoot only jacketed bullets.

You can't go wrong with a .308, especially around here. You won't encounter any deer at any range that will justify buying a 300 Super Ultra +P+ Magnum. Many would be shocked to learn how little difference in trajectory there is between, say a .270 and a .300 Winchester Magnum at 300 yards. In fact, the military reliably snipes out past 800 yards with the .308. I'm not that familiar with the 770, and would prefer a bare-bones 700 or Winchester 70. DaveTN is on to something when he advises you to reconsider if you will be shooting a lot from a bench. You're a stout enough guy, but I suspect some kids may want to come along sooner or later. The 770 is probably relatively light, and a few rounds from a bench may make younger deer hunters flinch a little. Dick's Sporting Goods had the 770 w/ a 3-9 scope for $319 last weekend (not sure if that price is still good). I'm sure it's a cheaper scope, probably a Bushnell or Tasco, but for $319, you can't go wrong. One thing to watch for on cheaper variable power scopes is a changing point of impact when changing magnification. In other words, at 4X, it's dead on. Move it to 9X, POI may move a little.

Give them a call and ask for Gordon Carroll. Comp-Tac has a top-notch product, but they are having minor internal issues. They royally pissed me off back about two months ago, but avoided losing a customer by making it right QUICKLY. They sent me a right-handed holster after I made the guy on the phone confirm that it would be left-handed several times. Also, I requested UPS or FedEx ground, since they sent my first holster signature required throught the post office. My post office closes at 5, and is not open at all on weekends. This makes it nearly impossible to get. Went I got the holster, I think I was more pissed about the $22 shipping charge for UPS ground than I was about it being wrong-handed. Anyway, Gordon Carroll is the new president or VP of operations or something, and one of his jobs is to troubleshoot problems like mine, and prevent future occurances. A friend of a friend (who knew he would want to talk to me) gave him my number, and until that conversation, I had sworn off anything else from Comp-Tac. Basically, I believe Comp-Tac has outgrown its infrastructure, and Mr. Carroll is tasked with fixing that. They are about to become a UPS shipper (part of the reason that my shipping was retarded expensive is because they only have an account with the post office). They are investing a pile of money in new software for orders, processing, shipping, etc. I talked with him for probably 45 minutes on two different occasions, and wanted to go work for them after talking to him. Don't give up on them--talk to them Monday, let them know you're pissed, and give them a second chance. I believe they are experiencing growing pains because their product is so good, not because they are incompetent or don't care.
