  1. Anything can happen anywhere, any time, but the Island is relatively safe. Getting to and from the Island, on the other hand...
  2. So many mistakenly think that you can't get a DUI unless you blow a .08. BAC is merely one test that an officer can do. In TN, you can blow a .03 and still go to jail. Two beers will get many to .08, anyway. It doesn't matter if you are drunk or not. Maybe you'll win in court, maybe you won't. The state does not care if someone can handle their alcohol or not. That's where .08 comes in--it's an arbitrary limit for determining when someone is drunk, but officers get LOTS of discretion. Too many people have too lax an attitude when it comes to drinking and driving. I fear that these same people will have the same lax attitude when drinking and carrying. This is why I have no problem with a "no guns in places where you must be 21 to enter" law. If somebody gets a DUI, nobody is going to start a grassroots movement to ban people from driving. If someone with an HCP gets caught drinking and carrying, drunk or not, someone somewhere will use the event as ammunition for the argument that no one should have an HCP. And if an armed HCP holder is considering having a couple drinks while carrying, I don't think they should have one either. I'm not as worried about what they will do as a result of drinking as I am about the consequences of being caught drinking and carrying for non-drinking HCP holders.
  3. Then how do you manipulate the manual safety on a standard 1911?
  4. Oh, there are pages 2 and 3...
  5. Maybe I am a fuddy-duddy, but I don't think the gun will be the main issue if you get pulled over on they way home after drinking. A weapons violation will just be a cherry on top of the DUI you may be facing.
  6. You might change your mind if you had ever been bitten by a slide, or if you were left-handed.
  7. *yawn* is my personal reaction. Another government model. It needs a beavertail, a commander hammer, and an ambi safety to be useful for me. At least it has a dovetailed front sight. If it's not a Rock Island with "Remington" stamped on the slide, I bet it sells like crazy.
  8. Going to a wedding at 12. Will try to swing by afterward.
  9. Went back in the 90s. Was pissed because I lost $80 that week. Saw Jackie Chan, John Bobbit, and lots of 6' hookers. Saw some mafia looking a-hole betting $30K a hand at Caesar's Palace. Grand Canyon was the best part of the trip--long drive, though. Next time, I'll just fly to Flagstaff. As a matter of fact, that's exactly what I'm doing in June.
  10. +1 for plain black Sevigny Comps. I have Ameriglos on some guns, too. It's amazing what a little daylight on each side of the front sight will do for your speed. Tritium inserts and fiber optic dots are just a distraction to me (until my vision takes a dump).
  11. Pepper spray, then hollow points, if needed. I see no need in risking rabies or worse because of some irresponsible dogowner.
  12. Do you know for sure that they were shipped Thursday? UPS and FedEx often get blamed when they never had the package to begin with.
  13. You'd be surprised how many people live on a dirt path with five other houses and no numbers on any of the houses, but a row of mailboxes out on the main road. Somehow, the order of the mailboxes never matches the order of the houses.
  14. That's gotta be a first...
  15. Are you one of those people who live on a gravel road with five other houses and nobody has an address visible? Also, how is it the fault of a driver when a shipper ships a package to someone's old address?
  16. Wow, the misinformation runs wild in this thread. 1. OS is on the money--the Reauthorization bill is about FedEx and UPS playing the same game by the same rules. 2. FedEx and UPS both use the "ring and run" method. If a shipper wants a signature for a delivery, they can easily specify such. FedEx once left a 17" Compaq computer monitor on my front porch in the rain. 3. UPS pays zillions every month in damage claims, as does FedEx. Claims paid only when packages are lost is a fallacy. 4. There is UPS and UPS Freight. UPS does not ship pallets. 5. I am no lover of unions, but I would like to see some of you run a UPS route for one month and complain that you were getting paid too much or that union work rules made for a "cush" job. Yes, I work at UPS. Fire away.
  17. Take a hard look at an STI Trojan or Ranger II www.stiguns.com. If you are thinking about a Kimber, go to an IDPA match. The guy cussing his 1911 and talking about switching to tactical plastic probably has a Kimber in his hand.
  18. I converted a 23 to shoot 9mm with a lone wolf barrel like andersmg mentioned. It did fine. Sometimes, people have to change the ejector to a 9mm also.
  19. The Guns & Ammo smith is named Phil Colley, I believe. He's always done sights for me in less than 30 minutes. Call before you go--he keeps odd hours and is not there on weekends.
  20. I would love to go to LeConte this time of year. I was up ther in late April a few years ago, and there was snow on the sides of the trail (not 48" though!)
  21. Anybody taken this at RUSA? Street Handgun - Force on Force
  22. Rangemaster has an IDPA-style match every Friday night.
  23. I think Yeager challenges people to an airsoft gunfight. You would probably lose. The biggest gripe I hear about RUSA is that, like many permit classes, they finish before the mandatory 8 hours or whatever it is. My wife and several friends got their permit training at RUSA, and all grumbled about being held the last hour or two so the teacher could BS and tell stories. I'm sure some of the stories are fascinating to newbies. Tom can elaborate on this more than I can, But Rangemaster takes full advantage of the whole 8 hours.
