  1. Because you are making assumptions that are not correct. I was a Police Officer in Illinois (Where carry is prohibited by everyone except LEO’s) and I was stationed in Virginia for two years. Even though it is a crime by itself to carry in Illinois we still responded to disturbances in bars where guns were involved…. A lot. I wasn’t a cop in Virginia; but I witnessed drunks pull guns in bars; first hand. Your statement “and yet we never hear of instances like those you describe”; doesn’t hold water. I don’t know why you haven’t heard of them or if you have checked. As I stated… I support you being able to carry in a restaurant or even a bar; as long as you don’t drink. I support carry on a college campus. I do not support any legislation that allows you to drink while carrying in any bar or restaurant. I really don’t want to address the LEO problem you have, it’s been beat to death here. We are not LEO’s; and what applies to them will not apply to us and vice versa. Let’s worry about us.
  2. The people you can learn a lot from aren’t always “Instructorsâ€. Get to know some people at your range. If you need some help; ask around. Join in on some competitive shooting; there are usually guys around willing to help. Everyone needs to be properly trained. And I’m sure there might be some good instructors around, but the pricing I have seen is just ridiculous.
  3. I used a glass bead blaster with the finest glass bead I could get, took a couple of minutes. Then I polished it to a near mirror finish. That took several hours. You don’t; you take it to someone that does bluing.
  4. You might be able to get by without a thumbreak on an IWB, but I wouldn’t have an OWB holster that doesn’t have one. You have to have a way of securing your weapon. I have never had it happen to me, but I have watched as weapons went sliding across the pavement. Also, you can be disarmed in a heartbeat without a secure holster. I would add it.
  5. So your sister didn’t get the memo that not only is S&W a better firearm; their Customer Service is far superior? Guess she should have signed up here.
  6. What are we (as a group) trying to do here guys? Are we trying to have it so we can go into establishments that serve liquor by the drink, or are we trying to get it so we can go in and also drink? Because one I can support; one I can’t. I also see no need to bog this down with BAC levels. There is already a law in effect for being drunk while carrying. This would be a different law. If a cop sees you drinking he arrests you, if a bartender or patron calls the police because you are carrying and wants to make a complaint; the Officer will determine if it is credible or not. If he thinks it is you are arrested and get your day in court; if it’s not he leaves. Most people have no idea what .08 BAC is unless they have been tested after drinking. Because of that coupled with the fact that their judgment is impaired; they blow. If you want to add in a BAC level that is fine; it will be below .08 and it will have “implied consent” attached to it. Only I’m going to take a WAG and say that implied consent on the gun charge will be a revocation of your HCP; not a suspension like it is with your DL. I would guess that most drunks that are carrying are discovered during a traffic stop. If you have two different BAC levels, you could possibly have a dilemma.
  7. +10 for the M&P. However… as far as concealability; I have owed both the Full size and the Compact. The compact is not really compact; it just has a shorter slide and grip. It is still pretty thick. But then I looked at everything and couldn’t find anything of quality that was thinner than the M&P except a 1911. Given our economy… the XD is made in Croatia by Croatians, SA is merely an importer. The M&P is all American Made by Americans (even the magazines) in MA. So that choice was a no brainier. At least for me.

    Can anyone Help?

If it is a Smith & Wesson manufactured handgun for $50 you can get a history letter from S&W. It will tell you when the gun was manufactured, what options it had when it left the factory and who it shipped to. If you just want to know when it was made, post the model number and serial number (you can use X’s for last two numbers if you like) here and anyone with a SCSW can tell you. But since most states don’t register firearms there is no way for you to check previous owners.
  9. I have pulled too many bodies from vehicles caused by those that thought they could handle their liquor. Even though .08% has nothing to do with the handgun law, it is not a “legal limit”; it is a presumption that you are legally intoxicated. If I’m in an armed encounter with a thug in convenience store the last thing in the world I need is some drunken azz stumbling into the middle of it and thinking their mind can process what they are seeing and that they can function. I will not support any legislation that allows a HCP holder to drink while they are carrying. And in my opinion all it will do is ensure certain death of any legislation that would allow those of us that want to responsibly carry; be allowed to do so.
  10. CrossBreed SuperTuck Oh and BTW I have a brand new one for an M&P if anyone has any 3†1911 holsters to trade.

    Dick's Stores?

I think bass Pro has a good selection, but the Nashville store keeps all the good stuff behind the counter and you have to ask for it.

  13. Politicians didn’t get us in the economic mess we are in now; (meaning prior to the bailouts) and they can’t get us out. The American people got us in this mess and only the American people can get us out. Our economy can not, and will not recover until our manufacturing base recovers and people go back to work at good paying jobs and the American people buy the products they are manufacturing. It is that simple. Will it mean higher prices? …Yes. Will it be worth it?... Yes This is not rocket science. Oh, and BTW… I don’t see me ever taking up arms against other Americans unless they are trying to kill me.
  14. You can check with your local PD; many will run it for you. As far as checking it without risking it being seized; you can’t. If it is stolen or wanted anyone that runs it will have to explain why there were running it and where it is.
  15. I can’t help it… I have to hear this. Who are you guys going to fight and how will that help us?
  16. Federal law requires you to notify any carrier when you are shipping a firearm… period. Failure to do so is a crime. The frame of a handgun with no other parts attached, or the lower of an AR is still a firearm. Marking the box “Machine Parts” or lying about the contents will only help show intent should the ATF be called in. The Post Office will not accept a handgun from you without an FFL. UPS will only accept shipments to a firearm manufacturer for repair if you don’t have an FFL. They won’t ship to a private party. I have never tried FedEx. EDIT: I will add that I am not aware of any law restricting us from sending handguns to each other in state. Maybe someone can post the law that they think applies. <O:p</O:p It’s not usually done because the carriers won’t ship.
  17. Yes, you probably need a lawyer. I say that because “Domestic Violence†is a show stopper. You need to have that charge removed anywhere you can. There is all kinds of “feel good†legislation targeted at those arrested for DV. First and foremost you need to find out what exactly you were charged with and the “Disposition†of your charges. According to you…. you were arrested on a five year old misdemeanor warrant?? That doesn’t sound right to me, but I’m not sure how that works in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:State>Tennessee.</st1:State> <st1:State></st1:State> <st1:State></st1:State>Even though you were 17 if the charge was DV and you didn’t show for court; a bench warrant was issued and the case was transferred to adult court (if it wasn’t there already). So any protection you had as juvenile was gone at that point. However that’s just a guess based on what you are saying. Call the TBI and see what the problem is. Check with the local court or arresting agency and see if they can tell you anything. “DISMISSED†must show up as the disposition after any DV charge. Both the local records check and the FBI check must both show a disposition.
  18. Sure they can. Police departments doing background investigations on candidates and the Military doing backgrounds for security clearances would not only run records checks through the computers and the courts, but they would come to our department and run a manual check through our records division. We had a record and disposition for all arrests made by our department; expunged or not. The Feds don’t have to honor an expungement; the state of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:State>Tennessee </st1:State>won’t honor one to restore gun rights, and many potential employers will still find the records. So the only thing I can see that an expungement might be good for would be a low level records check.
  19. You were convicted of domestic violence or you weren’t. If you weren’t convicted you don’t need an expungement. Your sister can’t drop the charges they are filed by the state. If you were convicted of DV you can’t own a firearm under Federal law. <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:State><ST1:pTennessee</st1:State> will not recognize and expungement to get your guns rights back on a felony conviction; I don’t know if that also applies to a DV conviction. You can check with the clerk of the court where the case was handled to see what the disposition is. If it was dismissed, see if they can submit that to the FBI. Also get a notarized copy of that because you may need it again.
  20. No, that’s not correct. You can buy a gun from a T<?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:State>ennessee</st1:State> resident on a private sale at 19. You can’t buy from an FFL because they are bound by Federal law; we are bound by state law.
  21. That’s exactly the same thing that happened to me. (Except I was guilty ) I was arrested in Illinois for misdemeanor possession of a handgun in my car (20 years ago). The charges were dismissed. I bought many guns in Illinois and Florida over the last 20 years. But I was tuned down twice for a purchase in Tennessee. I appealed and it was approved both times. But TBI told me that they had to check, they said that it didn’t show as dismissed on the first check and that if I was convicted of that I couldn’t purchase a gun in Tennessee; even though it was a misdemeanor. I know that some here say that isn’t right, but I was denied and I’m just saying that TBI said that was why. Both times it took 4 days for them to check with Illinois and see it was dismissed. Both times they called me and told me I was cleared to go pick-up the gun. My HCP went through without a glitch. I also see applications and renewals for HCP permits (listed on that link that someone posted here) denied for convictions that are misdemeanors. I could be wrong, but I think it’s not as cut and dried as Misdemeanor/Felony convictions.
  22. There is nothing wrong with the Springfield G.I. as long as you don’t get your feelings hurt when you shoot against a higher end 1911. I have owned them all at one time or another and you get what you pay for …to a point. Check with Mike Patterson at the saddle Shop in Arrington. I was in there once and he had a new one in the case at right under $500. If he doesn’t have one; he will get you one. I have an S&W stainless target and a Kimber SIS right now. I think if you wanted to add a little to your budget the S&W 1911 is the best deal out there right now. They are around $900 new, but I have seen them going for 600-700 used. You are never going to get everyone to agree. I don’t have too much to say about the Beretta because I don’t own one, and I see it as a duty gun; not a carry or target gun. I wouldn’t walk across the street to get a Glock if they were giving them away free, if I had to keep it. Don’t expect to trade your G17 at a shop. Sell it right here and take the cash to the shop. Good luck.
  23. For range ammo I have never found anything better or cheaper (in something you would want to put through your gun) than WWB form Wal-Mart.
  24. Whether or not you are charged with a weapons violation really depends on how the cops found the gun, what they were looking for when they found it, your attitude, and their discretion. There are a few ways it could go.
