Is it legal to carry military-style pistols?
DaveTN replied to a topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Can you fill us in anymore? What was the charge or complaint? So the DA dismissed the charge; so there was no court ruling or interpretation? Also, do you know if the arrest was by Gallatin PD or SCSO? -
Odd SBR question
DaveTN replied to Dolomite_supafly's topic in National Firearms Act (NFA) Regulated
I always assumed muzzle loaders had long barrels because they needed the length to get velocity and accuracy. Regardless of what the law is what will happen ballistically if you cut the barrel short? -
Exactly… I doubt most shooters come anywhere near seeing the limits of one brand over another. Most of us keep our weapons clean and any quality lube works great. Buying something with a cool name, cool looking container, and that makes outlandish claims while offering you your very high purchase price back if you are not totally satisfied is usually the way to go.

I think it’s also a violation of the forum rules.

Got a question before I put this in our no guns list.
DaveTN replied to bronco302's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Gun free dining Tennessee list 42 Ruby Tuesday Restaurants. 41 are listed as “not yet contactedâ€. One (2110 Green HillsVillage Drive in Nashville) is listed as no guns allowed. So since I doubt the “not yet contacted†claim, I would guess it is up to the store manager or franchise owner. -
Is it legal to carry military-style pistols?

The front grips on mine are hand guards. That is what they are and that is how they are sold. I don’t use lights or add-ons, they are there so I don’t burn the piss out of my weak hand when I use it to support the weapon. And the BATF had to know that when they approved it for sale as a handgun. I wouldn’t get on a witness stand and lie about how I use the weapon and shouldn’t be required to once the Feds have put their stamp of approval on it as a handgun. -

I also heard that the Sumner county case was a PLR-16; not an AR. The difference is important in that the PLR-16 is not now and has never been used as a rifle. It was designed as and has always been a pistol. I don’t know how Sumner County would have the authority to change that if the BATF has designated it a handgun. Do we know if the vertical grip is fact or fiction in that case? I care because I have one (but no VG). -
I have told by several members of this forum that is the case in Tennessee. I have also been told that Tennessee Officers have restrictions on off duty carry. I was a cop in Illinois, we had no such thing as “Off Duty†when it came to firearms carry and the state borders were our “Police Power†boundaries. So I find the discussions of these restrictions interesting.

The chances that you are going to run across someone that would justify the use of deadly force is much smaller than it is for a cop. Can I have your permit? The anti-gun people want to take away our permits based on the same ridiculous argument you are making. What does that have to do with an Officer disarming you for his own safety? As a citizen I couldn’t care less what you think. I contend that the Officer is the one that can make that call not only is it his right, but it is his responsibility to disarm anyone he thinks might be a threat. After it’s all sorted out he can give the gun back and let them go on their way. But… that’s just my opinion as a citizen and an HCP holder. I support our Officers, have walked in their shoes, and know that “Go home alive†is a motto they have to live by. Don’t get your panties in a bunch because someone uses theword “Civiliansâ€, it’s used to differentiate between talking about you and cops(there is a difference). I can’t comment on his statements right now, I haven’t went back and read them, as I said above I’ll leave that alone because I haven’t been paying attention to what he said or whether he is a cop or not. And I have made the statement several times that I believe I have the right to carry a gun; but I’m not arguing it comes from the 2nd amendment. The 2nd amendment battle has been fought and lost, just as I assured you it would be. You have a right to own a gun, but you don’t have a right to carry one. Your feelings or mine on that are on that are immaterial to law enforcement. Who cares if it is an HCP holder or a thug that just shot acop? How is the cop supposed to know? You seem to want a cop to risk his life based on a piece of paper you can buy from the state. That’s ridiculous.

Justice Dept. wants easy access to your email.
DaveTN replied to Raoul's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
If I have PC to get a warrant on a child pornographer I will ask that it be for all email accounts and anywhere that the suspect may store email, photos, and any other electronic or printed materials….And I would get it. Learn to do your job. -

Is it legal to carry military-style pistols?
DaveTN replied to a topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
If BATF says it is a pistol (Federal law) and the barrel is under 12” (Tennessee Law)… Yes. And of course it’s not a “fully” as the military would have. -
By interesting do you mean laughable?

I see, I'll stay out of it then.

I don’t know Sootch and that is the first video of his I have seen. What he feels and is describing is what most Police Officers feel when of their own falls. Especially if it is someone you work with or are friends with. I have been accused on here for being quick to side with the Police. I do side with them when they are right or we don’t have all the information; they have earned the benefit of the doubt. I don’t deny or apologize for that; I am proud of it. I am just as quick to denounce what they do if it is wrong. I have experienced the loss of an Officer that I worked with and was friends with. And have been sent to the hospital to guard a shooter that had just shot two Officers I was very close to (one was my training Officer). Both Officers and the shooter lived. But one of the hardest things was to watch the ER staff work on the shooter. They were crying while they saved his life. That kind of dedication is remarkable. Sgt Tim Chapin is probably in a better place; but his family needs your prayers.

Open carry: Permit not required????
DaveTN replied to Handsome Rob's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Can’t you get refugee status? The Brits are openly hostile to gun owners. -
What a bunch of cop baiting Just because he is a cop doesn’t mean he needs to bow down in your presence. It obviously pizzes you off that you are required to follow his orders. There are no laws that I am aware of that require a cop to trample all over your rights to stay alive. If he doesn’t like the way you look and he wants to disarm you; so be it. You don’t have a right to carry; you bought the privilege from the state (if you even have it) just like the rest of us. And the same laws that let you buy that privilege allow him to disarm you. The number of permit holders is minuscule; so I doubt it has much to do with how the public feels about cops. More …. You are clueless. You have no idea how many carry permit holders have shot someone. And trust me, if you were out there that number would matter to you regardless of what it is. And some more BS…. You would be the first to start whining about posting links. So go ahead… post some links to factual information that show there is a greater risk in a cop disarming someone than not. We would have to be morons to believe that and it certainly shows your credibility by posting it as a “Factâ€. As a cop I would have trampled all over your rights to stay alive; anyone would. Thankfully that was not the intent of our founding fathers and there is nothing in any law any where that would require a cop to do so.

Stunning: Illinois Supreme Court backs out of state gun owners
DaveTN replied to G27's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
Illinois is moving towards having carry permits; if we can keep it from getting bogged down in 2nd amendment debates. However… while this is a step in the right direction I don’t see where anything has changed. This case was tossed because the Cook County State’s Attorney brought the wrong changes. I skimmed over the court’s ruling. FOID cards are not required by out of state residents. You can’t get one, and you can’t be charged under those laws. The court did not allow the jury to be instructed on the proper lesser misdemeanor offense of unlawful use of a firearm (Carrying a loaded gun). I’m not sure, but I don’t see anything that stops the trial court from filing on the proper change and having a new trial. Maybe one of our lawyers could comment on if that would be double jeopardy. I travel to Illinois all the time and carry a lot of guns in my vehicles. I know I won’t be carrying a loaded gun based on this court ruling. I’ll ask my daughter to find out how the States Attorney’s and the Police departments interpret this. -
Any expert advice on polishing a feed ramp?
DaveTN replied to maroonandwhite's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Don’t try to remove machining marks from the barrel (other than the feed ramp); you are changing size and shape. How many rounds did you put through this gun before you decided it needed this? How many FTF or FTE’s did you have? -
It’s not impossible for you to have seen a Panther. I think most here are having fun and don’t mean any harm. When I was a cop in Illinois there were rumors of a Panther (not the Chicago type, but the cat type). Our dispatchers told me that even people driving through on the interstate would call in and say they saw it. Did it exist? Who knows? I have seen and captured the Chicago type. I had a 20lb black cat that could be mistaken for a Panther if you had depth perception issues. Killer of Police Officer may have purchased a pistol at a gunshow.
DaveTN replied to Superposed's topic in General Chat
Unless things have changed, I would have a tough time checking someone out with their name and SSN. It would be pretty easy with their name a DOB. But until I’m required to I wouldn’t even try on a gun sale. -
I was arrested and jailed for no crime other than having a gun in my car. What would you like to discuss about the 2nd amendment?
