In tough economic times we just gave away more American jobs and made the pipeline for drugs and illegals a little less restrictive.

iron sights on a bolt hunting rifle
DaveTN replied to Wingshooter's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
Remington discontinued the 700 BDL with fixed sights in 300 win mag, but they still offer it in 300 RUM. Ruger offers the African in 300 win Mag with fixed sights. -
They have. Smith & Wesson is taking that market. But you have to remember that Glock has been on top in that market for over 20 years. It’s taking a while to get some of the diehard Glock users to come around; but it will happen. The M&P is totally made here, no foreign parts, fit and finish is better than a Glock, and it costs about the same as a Glock. There’s no need for me to support workers overseas; I like to support American workers every chance I get. The real profit is made in the civilian market; civilians want what cops have. Glock was selling pretty cheap to Police Departments to try to keep the civilian market.

If you want to be a hostage negotiator I would think you would need to work your way through the ranks of a large Police Department. Awhile back I was reading that Nashville Metro was having trouble finding people that hadn’t been arrested and could pass the tests; they were getting most of their people from other departments.

No thanks, need a .223.

If that’s a VLS; that’s what I have in .308 now.

To give an idea of the price range… I’m looking at the Remington 700 SPS at $525 or the SPS Tactical at $581, new delivered. I’m not familiar with the Savage alphabet soup; what would be the competitors to those. I don’t really care about “Tactical†but that’s the cheapest set-up with a heavy barrel. A walnut or laminated stock would be fine with me; I just don’t want to pay extra for it. I do my own gun repairs, but I won’t be swapping barrels. If it’s something beyond my ability I’ll send it to the factory.

I need a .223 Paper Puncher for the range. I’m not a hunter. I have a Remington 700 VLS in .308 wearing a Leupold 6.5X20X40, and I’m going to keep it, but would like to find a similar center fire set-up that would be cheaper to shoot. I picked the .223 because of the cost and availability of ammo. I’m not going to spend the money I spent on the .308; I can’t justify it for what I want it for. I have plenty of experience with .223 AR’s (and have an M&P-15T now) but have never had a .223 bolt. I’ve been looking for used and it doesn’t appear that .223 is very popular in bolts, so I may need to buy new. If I’m going to buy new I’m wondering about Savage. I know their quality has jumped significantly in the last few years and many here use them. What models should I be looking at? I would like a heavy barrel, but might be able to get by without it. Any other ideas? The only requirement I have that is set in stone is that it has to be American made. Thanks, for any recommendations.

If all things are equal there won’t be much difference; including the price. Parallax. If the lenses aren’t made to an exacting spec, or if they can move; you will have problems with parallax. Clarity. Quality of the lens and the manufacturing process. Light gathering capability. Brighter clear view. Body construction. If the body construction allows the lenses to move or if the body has significant changes with temperature changes (Coefficient of thermal expansion) it will affect accuracy and repeatability. And to me, warranty and customer service are important. If I spend a bunch of money on a scope I want to know that if I drop it or something goes wrong with it I can send it in and they will fix it. The biggest variable is the shooter and the gun. If you have a half azz shooter with a half azz gun and he puts a Leupold on it; he will still be a half azz shooter. If he uses a cheap scope and shoots the same the Leupold will get the blame. It’s like people spending $3K on a 1911 and thinking it will make them a great shooter. If there are near great shooter status it might help them; if they are an average shooter they probably won’t see much difference. It’s not what you can see when looking through the scope; it’s how the total package works for you. That’s something you have to be able to try. I wouldn’t buy a Leupold if I could shoot as accurately with a Tasco; that would be crazy. For your hunting application the key factors would be, can it handle the .308 recoil and hold zero, and once you have it sighted in can it maintain zero when you make that cold bore shot a week later at a Deer. There are scopes under $200 that can do that.

Get the American handwringers involved; just like they are doing right now.

Isolationism: Tell me why it's a bad idea.
DaveTN replied to gregintenn's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
We aren’t the worlds Police Force and we don’t pretend to be. All of our actions have been self-serving. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing; it’s just that we will all have an opinion on whether or not we should be involved. The threat has changed. We are safe from attacks from any country on earth. Until the technology to render our ballistic submarines useless is developed no country is going to try to attack or occupy us. However, the threat from terrorists is very real. If we can tie their support to a country; we have someone to hold accountable. If not, we take them out in surgical attacks no matter what country they are in. -
Oh I agree 100%. But the Mexican politicians would rather have the drug cartels than have us take 1$ out of their country. The Mexican government is as corrupt as the drug cartels; they live like kings while the Mexican people struggle just to get by.

Absolutely I feel that way. I do not fear our Military or our Police Officers. Take the gloves off. Police Departments are left to try to deal with these problems after these criminals have crossed the borders and obviously the Border Patrol does not have the resources to do their job. The U.S. military should be used to defend our border with Mexico - National Immigration Reform | Examiner.com -
I’m in. Of course it’s going to be tough taking on those drug Lords without taking any weapons into Mexico. The libtards are going to have to have some congressional inquiries about that.

The American people elected Obama. The largest voting group is the poor, and getting bigger every day. That group is going to vote for whoever is making the biggest claims to make their lives better; whether they can deliver or not. Any other political issue is eclipsed by our economic issues.

That’s what you get when people get into politics because of their name. We don’t have jobs because we don’t have American companies producing product. Too many Americans are only patriots when it doesn’t cost them anything. We can’t always compete on price and a big part of that is government intervention. Instead of handing out money to people that will lie on the couch and watch Jerry Springer; use that money to give land, tax breaks, and other incentives to companies that will stay here. Help them offset the costs of OSHA, EPA, Workman’s Comp, etc., that other countries don’t have.

Can Ron Paul get Posse Comitatus repealed? If we bring our troops home we still need to maintain a strong military. Let’s repeal Posse Comitatus and use our military to protect our borders. -
On one hand I don’t think Politicians should hit a lifetime home run on a pension and health care. On the other you would be hard pressed to find qualified people to interrupt their careers to serve, if it weren’t for those perks. You would end up with people that can’t hold down a job anywhere else running for office; we already have too much of that. Being a politician certainly is a career. I have never supported term limits and I never will. “The people†should be free to elect who they want. If they have a good one; they deserve to be able to keep him. All we have is our vote, and that should not be able to be taken away.

It’s not a bad idea if other countries aren’t doing things that threaten the safety and security of your nation. You look at each individual case and decide if you should wait or act. It’s proactive vs. reactive. -
Oh please. We judge here; it’s what we do. You do it as much as anyone. Innocent until proven guilty? You must be kidding me. If that was the case they wouldn’t handcuff you, take you to jail and tow your car before you are convicted. Better for who? I wish I had statistics on DUI arrests VS. DUI convictions, but I don’t. A refusal may help your case, but its doubtfull the average citizen will get off. It does keep your BAC out of evidence. They don’t need a warrant. Some departments use blood draws, some use breathalyzers. Serious injury or fatal accidents will usually get a blood draw.

Doesn’t matter which one is a toy if someone is threatening me with one.
