Why is the 2nd amendment even being discussed in this situation? New Jersey requires a gun owner’s card and a special permit is required to own handguns, they even have a form you have to submit to be an employee of an FFL. Of course the 2nd amendment doesn’t apply to blind people; it doesn’t apply to citizens with sight either.

Buying a foreign made 1911 is sacrilege. As a matter of fact I think it was commandment 11 or 12 before the publishers made them shorten the list to 10. I think Remington R1 is under $600 and made here. I haven’t got to shoot one yet though.

You are correct. People that have not been arrested or convicted of anything may bump you out of a job. If I were to see recent DUI or drug charges I could easily interpret that as someone with a substance abuse problem that would not be a reliable worker. If their resume looked good enough I might ask for an explanation; if not, I wouldn’t risk it. If you haven’t been in trouble in a long time and you have the money, you can get charges expunged. Sure, they aren’t gone from someone (like the military or a Police Department) running a background check on you, but they might not show up for the average BG check. And yes, some places want to know about arrest whether you were convicted or not; they will decide if it is a factor to your employment. Jobs are hard to come by, people need to know that they may miss an opportunity or be banned from it all together by criminal acts. I know full well that people change, but that doesn’t mean they get the same consideration as people that chose never to commit a criminal act. I made the decision to carry a gun in Illinois; I thought it was my right and if arrested I would fight it all the way to the SCOTUS. That was stupid, but I truly believed what in what I was doing at the time. After the appeals court kicked my case back to the trial court, I cut a deal for court supervision and the charges were dismissed after a year. Even though dismissed a records check will show an arrest for “Unlawful Use of Weaponsâ€. I didn’t use a weapon, but mere possession in my car was under that chapter. I suspect if someone did a background check on me that would catch their eye. I did something stupid that I regret doing. I thought I would have the support of pro-gun groups like the NRA; I had the support of no one. I doubt I will be applying for any jobs now where that will be an issue, but had I wanted to go back into law enforcement after that it probably would have been a deal breaker even though there was no conviction on record. I made a stupid mistake and now I have to own up to it.

No, I don’t think that’s law yet and even when it is, it does not allow you to carry in states that do not have permits. I do most of my shooting in Illinois and travel with a Suburban full of guns. Sure would be nice to carry there. Good news though; Illinois is still looking at right to carry. It would be great if they went from one of the only states to totally outlaw carry; to the fifth state to be Right to Carry. That’s what got us to where we are now. I can remember when rape was rape. It was a violent brutal crime and the sentences reflected that. Now you can be charged with rape if a chick gets drunk, has consensual sex with you, and decides she was too drunk and you raped her. The “family Fight†laws were changed from the crimes of assault or battery requiring a witness or some evidence of a battery, with the Officer having discretion, to “Domestic Violence†requiring an arrest with no evidence and taking the Officers discretion away. And then the Feds take your guns rights on a misdemeanor charge. As I said before I don’t see anyone introducing legislation making it easier for convicted criminals to get guns. I’m sure it’s going to go the other way. I also believe that employers have a right to know your criminal history; that’s why some do background checks. They deserve to have the facts and then you can discuss them in the interview. If you think you can make a case as to why they should hire you with a DUI or drug possession conviction; you have that opportunity. But to hire you in and then find out later they have to let you go because of a prior conviction doesn’t help anyone.

Where will the color option be when it becomes available?
-
The “background check†seems to be the main focus of the anti-gun folks right now. And that’s okay with me. But with all the controversy about mental cases and criminals getting guns; I just don’t see anyone proposing anything that will make it easier for convicted criminals to get guns.

What does the public information say the charges were?

^ This. I have zero responsibility if a criminal burglarizes my home and steals guns as long as I report them stolen.

I watched all six hours of it on the History Channel last weekend. Excellent production. I didn’t go to Vietnam but I was in the military during Vietnam. This is an excellent show for anyone that wonders why we were there, what the public opinion was, and the mistakes that were made. What did the rest of you think?

The 686 is an excellent revolver. It was the King of Police duty weapons prior to everyone switching to semi-autos. The 686 is still in production, so it’s not really what I would consider a collector gun. All Smith & Wesson revolvers will hold their value. A Pre-Lock is more desirable to some, but there isn’t much difference in price. The most important thing you need to check is the mechanics of that particular gun and whether or not Bubba has had his hands in it. Things like Lock-up, end shake, and timing will impact price more than whether it’s a pre-lock or a dash “whateverâ€. Here are some pointers on what to look for. You can do a search and there are some pretty in-depth articles on how and what to check. Revolver Checkout Procedure

I don’t think it is going to be an issue without a complaint from the owner, and I doubt an owner will call the Police on an employee. Have we had a case (that can be documented) yet of someone carrying past a sign and being arrested or cited for that only?

Where do I buy a million dollars’ worth of insurance that will pay a victim’s family if I shoot an innocent bystander or have a negligent discharge that cripples a co-worker? And if you know of somewhere, what will it cost? And if I had that it would be a given for the victims attorney, why would he stop there? Why not name my employer for not having a safe work environment and get whatever he can get from him also? What you are suggesting is what was tried in Illinois by requiring gun owners to carry a million dollar insurance policy. It failed there, and I don’t think we want it here. Holding the responsible party liable is the answer. The problem is in most cases they don’t have enough money to matter.

The purpose of jail is punishment and hopefully, for some, rehabilitation. If the purpose was to protect us, people charged with violent crimes would not be allowed bail or released from jail. If a family member fears you so much they have to call the cops on you, or you are stupid enough to deal in felony amounts of drugs; you don’t have the self-control or mental stability to carry a gun. If you can convince the court that sentenced you that you deserve to have your felony expunged that option is available to you. And in other states you can get your gun rights back. However, Tennessee still will not restore your gun rights if that felony involves violence or drugs. That has been tested in the courts in this state and there is another case pending now. Some jobs will even ask if you have ever been arrested, not have you been convicted. They will make the decision if they want you or not based on the situation. Actions have consequences and they always will. If you don’t want to suffer the consequences; don’t commit the crimes.

Private sales are legal in this state. There is no assurance you won’t end up with a stolen firearm. You can ask for a transfer at a local gun shop, but I doubt most sellers will want to mess with that. Just make sure you can ID the person you bought from. If they don’t want to show you ID or you don’t like the terms of the sales; walk away. If a seller has an FFL; they are required to do the background check. If a person is selling guns at a flea market they run the risk of being charged with selling guns without a license. It’s a grey area; the ATF doesn’t put a number on how many guns you sell before its illegal, but people have been charged for it.

Young people need to know that some things can ruin their lives or careers, such as a DUI or drug charges. The free pass stops when you are no longer a juvenile. There is a remedy. After a long period of time the law allows for the expungement of charges if the person hasn’t been in any trouble. It doesn’t help in all cases, but for some it does. However, the state of Tennessee will not restore gun rights if it’s a violent crime or drugs.

Who offers a policy that will pay if it’s a bad shoot? Unlike car accident insurance, companies have refused to pay saying it’s an intentional act. I’m not a lawyer, but I would guess as soon as companies start making policy or stipulations; they are no longer an innocent party. Whose responsibility would it be to make sure your insurance was paid up?

Who offers a policy that will pay if it’s a bad shoot? Most insurance talk I have seen is for legal fees and it doesn’t pay if you are found guilty. (NRA) Just because you have insurance why would the attorneys not name the company also in a lawsuit? To get businesses to back off the no-carry signs and policies, we need legislation that says they can’t be sued for our actions. And not that lame stuff we have that says we can get a judgment for costs if found not guilty. Do I think it will happen? Of course not. A lawyer isn’t going to take a case when there is no hope of a payday; and lawyers make the laws. But we can try. I think there is a better chance of that happening than getting legislation that will force your employer to allow you to carry in a state where carrying a loaded firearm is a crime.

This looks to be a good deal for $449. It looks like maybe it’s an SPS (its a heavy barrel) in a cheap plastic camo stock with a cheap scope. I’m thinking I could ditch the stock and scope and still come out better than buying used? Anyone have this gun or any experience with it?
-
That’s why we need legislation that while holding the gun owner responsible for his actions; gives absolute immunity to any company that allows an authorized (HCP holder) employee to carry. A Pizza deliver guy doesn’t have any money for the lawyers to get if he kills an innocent person or bystander. The company being the “Deep Pockets†is the only place for a payday to come from. Even though they aren’t liable the risk and the cost of a trial probably means a settlement. That’s just wrong. So the companies can’t tell their delivery guys to get their HCP and strap on a gun and wait for the inevitable “bad shoot†or civil suit from a self-defense shooting. If I carry a gun on my job I should shoulder all of the responsibility and liability for that. However if I negligently shoot or kill someone the family is going to want a bigger settlement that I can pay; so they go after my employer. Most employers aren’t willing to take that risk. I’m sure many employers have a “no Guns†policy for personal reasons. But I would bet for most of them it’s a simple business decision.

I couldn’t find anything on the Remington web site. Since Remington bought Marlin, word on RimFire is that it’s a rebadged Marlin XT-22 youth and not a 514. ??

Off-duty or retired LEO needs no permit???
DaveTN replied to -Bristol-'s topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Retired Officers can carry anywhere including states like Illinois that don’t allow carry. It’s called the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act. But he has to meet the requirements of the department he retired from, and have a Department ID. -
The Jackson Police Chief is not the CLEO; The Madison County Sheriff is. All you have to do is mail the form, his approval is not necessary. Here’s the address: Madison County Sheriff's Office 546 East College Street Jackson, TN 38301-6404 (731) 423-6000 The CLEO in all Counties in Tennessee is the Sheriff, with the exception of Davidson where it’s the Metro Chief.
