There are millions of threads on here about the caliber wars. You just have to apply some physics coupled with common sense. I was trained, and I train the goal is not whether or not you can kill, the goal is to make the bad guy unwilling or unable to fire his weapon. A .22 can kill, but if it’s a body shot in a deadly armed encounter; it won’t do much for the goal. Before the “shot placement” guys start in….. that’s a given. Most any round can stop the threat if properly placed. Can someone that has probably never experienced that level of adrenalin rush in their life do that? You won’t know until it happens. You probably want a round that can expel a lot of energy in the body. Surface area and mass is the key to that. Only enough Velocity to do the job is required. So much velocity that the round passes through the body is not required. So, it sounds like, from what you are saying the choices are a .380, a heavy 9MM or a .38. I’ve been the responding Officer on a lot of shootings. Only one that I remember with a .380. The victim got shot in the gut. It was winter and he had heavy clothes on. He didn’t think he was hit and went after the shooter, who ran off. He was sitting on the curb when I got there and stood up and talked to me. As the put him on a gurney and loaded him into the ambulance, I told the EMT’s to tell the ER staff and I would be in to get that bullet. He said “You want this bullet?” And before they could stop him he picked it out of his gut and handed it to me. That coupled with my experience with seeing what .380’s will do, and the problems of being able to reliably operate an action, have formed my opinion. But that’s just one persons opinion. On the other hand, .22’s and 380’s have killed a lot of people. A J-Frame S&W or a Shield are popular small carry guns. I’d recommend she try a Shield with a Federal 9MM 147 Grain HST. Or J-frame Model 60 with a 130 grain JHP. A say a Model 60 because it is all stainless and the heaviest of the J-frames. The heavier the gun, the less felt recoil. The lightweight J-frames will be terrible. The Shield EZ is another option, but do your research. The .380EZ is plagued by feeding problems. I assumed it was because the .380 isn’t really a good round for operating a gun that big, but the 9mm recently came out and it appears to have the same problems. If she wants a house gun, that’s not a carry gun, have her shoot a S&W K or L frame with .38’s. They are cream puffs. You asked for “any feedback” this is simply mine, and many will disagree; but that okay. You and your wife are the only ones that will have to reap the results of your choice. I don’t know. I would love to have some Performance Center Revolvers from back in the day when PC meant something. But I have a PC M&P that I told the guys at S&W if it was ever in the Performance Center; in was on a cart passing through.

They said on the news today Memorial Day gas prices will approach a 20 year low. I figured when this started they would find some way to shoot prices through the roof based on the virus. Looks like it may not happen.

That would be some reasons for reloading, regardless of the cost. I would like some of those Carpenter bee (or wasp) loads. But where I live I’m pretty sure the cops would get called. I would hate to have the cops walk around the corner of my house while I’m out there seeming, randomly firing into the air.

The SC site lists Tennessee, but it has a link back to TN.Gov that is not there anymore. As you can see, there is no “Enhanced Only“ like there are after several other states. I would suspect they have not addressed it yet, and when they do; it will also be “Enhanced Only“. How quick do you need to know? My understanding is that for retired Officers LEOSA requires you have ID and meet your prior departments qualification requirements, and some departments don’t authorize out of state trainers to do that. Is that not part of the problem?

We lost or best source of range ammo, Walmart. (That's what I read, but I haven't needed ammo in awhile, so I haven't been in there.) But then Sportsman Warehouse opened and they are pretty close to Walmart prices. I have ordered ammo online, but its usually because of a really good special. Academy has good prices also, but I have to go to Smyrna for that, so I haven’t been there much.

I’m not a Doctor. But I do have a very good Doctor. If I get sick I will take what he tells me to take. I’m not going to tell him I want to take something, or I don’t want to take something based on what the President or anyone else says. If there is a chance something will work, I hope he won’t wait until I am deathly ill and in the last hours of my life, so some azzhats can claim the recommended drug either didn’t do anything, or killed me. Politics doesn’t belong in medicine. Not in abortion, not in pain medication, and not in this. But I would guess very few Doctors write prescriptions based on all this ridiculous drama about what the President is, or is not taking. I doubt there is very little controversy in the medical community; I suspect most of it is on the internet and in the media.

I thought when I look at it years ago an out of state LEO cert that was within 5 years was good. But I don’t see anything there now to allow anyone not certified in this state (other than military) to skip the class. Do you have certification of any of this? If you are a currently employed Federal LEO covered by LEOSA; who is telling you there would be a problem?

What do you guys think of this light? 3000 lumens in a light that size is crazy! I would pre-order this right now, but I’m a little skeptical of that rotary switch, as I absolutely hate the operation of my Streamlight ProTac HL 5-X USB. I think it needs that rotary switch AND an on/off. I love my small 1000 lumens Fenix that has separate ON/OFF and light level switches. They are $120 pre-order, but $96 through 5/25.

You used to get an FFL discount with some online vendors, I don’t think many do that anymore. Or if you are buying old surplus stuff, it keeps you from going through an FFL. I haven’t used mine much over the years, but for $10 a year; I’ve kept it.

Greg, thanks for the comments. I’ve never been to one of Randy’s classes, but his comments on here regarding the use of deadly force always seem accurate and well thought out. It’s imperative that people carrying understand those. If you have to support your family, staying out of prison is as important as staying alive. A tear forms in my eye when I see you guys that have wives that get involved. My wife will go with me to the range, and she has/will shoot; but she has no desire to do so. I would tell her to buy anything she wanted if she would shoot (not that she needs my permission). I won’t dry fire any gun I own, other than for maybe function or a trigger test; that’s not open for discussion. So, let us know how you like the laser setup you got. I’ve kicked around that idea also. Some that have the cartridge that goes in your real gun look pretty interesting.

I looked at it everyway from Sunday and decided that if you just want to load your own rounds, reloading is a good idea. As far as it saving money; I don’t think so. I remember I asked a guy once about his costs, because to me just the price of bullets seemed high. He said he walked the roadways picking up lead wheel weights and cast his bullets. Sorry, no walking along looking for wheel weights for me (although I could use the exercise). I’m also one of those that believe there is no way rounds loaded by a reputable manufacturer, even cheap range ammo such as WWB, aren’t more consistent and a better quality than someone loading at home. I don’t know that to be a fact; that’s just what I think based on my manufacturing and multi-slide press experience. Either side can claim whatever they like. DISCLAIMER: My comments about factory ammo do not include bench rest shooters that work up special rounds for their specific rifle. However, if I ever got to the point where my 100 or 200 yard groups was the ammo, and not me; I would be a happy guy. But since I’ve retired, I’ve still kicked around the idea of doing it. It looks like for about $1000 for a Dillion press and the other required accessories. I wouldn’t live long enough to see a savings, but when I die someone would get a very nice set-up for free. Also… I hope none of you reloaders are the vultures at the range that are trying to grab my .308 brass before it hits the ground.

If you want to see if there is a difference between shooters, clamp the gun in something so you can put the dot on a point (as far away as possible), and you can look through it at about the same distance you would when holding it. Do you all see the dot at exactly the same point? If you move your head, does the dot move? You don't adjust for pull or anticipating. As you have found out; it's not repeatable. Put a laser in the bore, adjust the sight to it. Or pick out one of the guys drilling the center out of the target at the local range and ask them to shoot it. This isn't usually a big deal because you put it on and go shoot to dial it in. If you can't, or if its not repeatable, either you are doing something wrong or the sight is moving.
