is it illegal to sell a gun with a non functioning safety?
DaveTN replied to JoeJ615's topic in General Chat
There are no federal safety requirements for domestically produced firearms. However, there are states you couldn’t ship it to with a non-functioning safety. I wouldn’t sell a gun with a faulty safety. You don’t have to violating a law to lose in civil court. -

The posting only needs to be legal to issue you a citation; it doesn’t need to be to ask you to leave. Unless it changed recently we have yet to see anyone cited for carrying past a sign. -

With technology the way it is I would guess in the next few years they won’t need to wand anyone; they will be able to look at a computer screen and tell if there is a gun on you or even in a car in the parking lot. -
Knoxville Allowing Fair to Prohibit Guns in a Park

So, this is the wife or sister of the Mayors spokesman? -
Personal reasons. I have been in a fight for control of my weapon. Mine was a revolver and had nothing to do with a magazine disconnect, but I had to hold the hammer down on my weapon to keep the guy from pulling the trigger. I could have gone hands on with the guy, but I couldn’t let go of the gun. Luckily my backup was close and I dealt with it until he arrived. Around the same time a Trooper friend of mine was telling me about another trooper that got in a fight on the interstate, the perp got his gun, but as they were fighting for control the Trooper hit the mag release. The guy knocked the trooper to the ground and was standing over him trying to shoot him but the gun would not fire. As his backup approached from the other direction and saw what was going on, he knew he had little time to act, he fired out the window of his moving squad and dropped the perp dead. The Trooper’s life was saved by a magazine disconnect and incredible luck on an almost impossible shot. Now, my chances of having a hands on encounter as a private citizen are slim. But so are needing a gun and I carry one. You can run through scenarios in your head of what you think you would do, but I have experienced it and seen other Officers experience it; one incident (family fight) ended with two Officers wounded and the perp dead. So to me a magazine disconnect is not a “safety” it is a “feature”. My personal experience makes me want one on any handgun that offers it. I have never had an experience or know anyone that has where a disconnect caused a problem. I have never had the need to pop off a single round that wasn’t loaded from a magazine and I would never continually dry fire a weapon; so that’s not an issue with me. As far as the safety, I wouldn’t want it because I wouldn’t use it. My Shield has one but I don’t use it. I’m not going to remove it as I doubt it would ever be an issue; I just check it every time I put the gun on. Whether you like a particular “feature” or “Safety” or don’t is irrelevant with the M&P line; they let you have it “your way” instead of telling you what you do and do not need.

You need tickets to get drinks on Southwest now?

I’ve had several M&P’s and have two now; I’ve never needed to upgrade a trigger. The safety is just a personal call. I wouldn’t use it, so I wouldn’t want it. But I want a magazine disconnect on every gun I can get it on.

Do I have to Check My Firearms, Next Chilhowee Gun Show
DaveTN replied to runco's topic in Events and Gatherings
I’m pretty sure this will be an insurance issue. The insurance companies will probably tell them to find another spot if they want insurance. -
I wasn’t nit picking about who and who does not lose their gun rights. I just seem to remember something about Tennessee passing legislation that those who are convicted of felon in possession do mandatory time. Meaning that both of them might want to be real sure of what the situation is before he brings a gun in the house. Then it’s a non-issue. I think we all addressed that. A woman with a clean record doing six months on her first misdemeanor arrest? Possible; but not likely.

7.62Nato is 7.62X51. 7.62x39 is AK (and others) ammo. Not even close to the same. 7.62Nato (military) and .308 (commercial) are close to being the same, but they are not exactly the same. The commercial ammo can be more powerful than the military ammo. It’s argued all the time, but you need to know they are not the same.

I’m all about a safe made in America. Looks like there may be some new players in the market.

Is destroying the records required by law? If so, who is well known for not doing that? You think that state or Federal officials that are required by law to destroy records would risk their jobs or jail by not doing what is required by law? Who are they and why would they do that?
-
Unless you find someone that will sell you a gun with no ID; there is a pretty good chance the gun could be traced to you. Who do you think is going to come for it? When I have someone that is adamant that they don’t want a record of the transaction I assume they are a convicted felon trying to buy a gun and we are done. I know that isn’t always the case; but I’m not real interested in selling to the "other" group either.

I thought we were discussing bolt action rifles until you threw out the SHTF scenario. I love bolt action rifles, and thought that was what you were locked in on. But there is just no way are they a SHTF rifle in any way shape or form. One rifle for everything? That would be an AR10. As I said before; we all want one rifle that will do everything and one handgun that will do everything.. They don’t exist. That’s why they call them gun “collections”.

Alien gear , Galco, Crossbread, Safariland IWB
DaveTN replied to TnShooter83's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
I think leather is King. D.M. Bullard makes a “Dual Carry” than can be used either way. I have one and the quality is excellent. I just wish it had a thumb break. http://store.dmbullardleather.com/catalog/category/5060221 IWB doesn’t need to be much: I would just go with something like the Galco Stow-N-Go. OWB is more comfortable but needs a more substantial holster. D.M. Bullard, Don Hume, Galco, Desantis all make good ones. I have this for a shield, it is well made and carries nice.. http://www.desantisholster.com/THUMB-BREAK-SCABBARD For a minimal holster I have this for a full size M&P40... http://www.donhume.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=67_357_193&products_id=37 I have a Supertuck for a M&P 40C. I had to leave it in the car one day and it melted. Crossbreed told me to send it in to be repaired; they sent me a new one. They responded quickly and did all that could be ask of customer service. Too bad they don’t sell leather holsters; I would buy from them. -
Don’t confuse yourself with long Vs. Short action; pick the caliber and that choice is made for you. .308 will be a short action and 30-06 would be a long action. No, a .308 and 30-06 are not interchangeable. There are millions of pages you can google and read about .308 vs. 30-06. They are both excellent rounds and both will stop any man or beast you will encounter in North America. Let’s look at the choice between the two with some common sense. Which caliber does the military and law enforcement use in general? .308 has been used by both military snipers and LEO SWAT teams for years. The 30-06 is not in use in those rolls anymore. .308 cheap ammo is still in production; 30-06 is not, when the surplus is gone; it’s gone. Commercial hunting ammo in 30-06 will be available as it is still a popular hunting caliber. .308 is a 1000 yard round; it’s proven that time after time. You will not be in a shooting situation where you need something that will shoot farther than a .308, especially not target shooting. When you find somewhere to shoot at 1000 yards, and you get some experience at 1000 yards; you will be replacing the equipment you are buying now anyway. 300 Blackout is a round you might want if you want a suppressed 30 caliber weapon. It’s a round to get a 30 caliber sub sonic. It is not want you want in a long range rifle. My weapon for that scenario is not a bolt action rifle; it a .308 DPMS Panther (the type is commonly referred to as AR10) It’s a semi-auto .308 in an AR configuration with 20 round mags. No, it is not interchangeable with an AR-15 and there is no Mil-Std for it. It would make a great hunting rifle, and is a good target rifle. It costs to feed it. If you are worried about ammo cost stay with .223 in an AR. I always have to smile when I see this perception that you will run out of ammo and need to “trade” ammo. Keep a couple hundred or more rounds on hand; then it’s a non-issue.

I haven’t been a cop in many years, and it wasn’t in this state. I would think you would charge them under state charges, not Federal (although they could be charged either way). I was just surprised by your response about contacting the ATF. I wouldn’t think they would have anything to do with it unless you had questions about the weapon they were in possession of? If I’m not mistaken Tennessee State law is tougher on felons in possession that federal law, but I could be wrong about that. I thought I read that Tennessee had made that mandatory prison time.

Most 700’s have an internal magazine that is part of the action. They come with (BDL, CDL) and without (ADL) hinged floorplates. The hinged floorplate allows you to dump the rounds out the bottom to unload. Some people don’t like having to unload an internal magazine. I’m a shooter not a hunter so I unload mine by shooting it. By Remington 700 is a target rifle, if I am doing something where I think I will need more rounds I take my .308 AR that has 20 round magazines. You mention that the rifles you looked at had scopes on them, but you didn’t say what they were. The scope is 50% of the equipment. If you are going to shoot long range you will need a quality scope. That will easily cost as much as the rifles you are looking at. Don’t worry about that; your choice there is caliber. For example, a .308 is a short action; a 30-06 is a long action. Basically there are long and short actions, and magnum variants of both. If you go to buy parts for a Remington 700,like a stock, you will need to know if its short (SA) or long (LA) https://support.remington.com/General_Information/Which_calibers_are_long_action_and_which_are_short_action%3F

There are many threads here about people wanting the perfect handgun or the perfect rifle in a single example. They don’t exist. So since money is no object; (I read that in this thread somewhere ) do what many of us have done; buy them all. I have a .308 bolt action rifle because I believe that is the best choice in that platform. Choose between a bolt or AR, or between .223 and .308 in an AR? No need to, I have an AR in .223 and one in .308. I also have AR’s and full size handguns in .22 for trigger time. I don’t become attached to guns. They are toys or tools that come and go. The used market is crazy and may not be your best bet. New prices have settled down and inventories are high. If you can get a good new price; you can put a nearly new price on it when you sell, and if you can find a buyer; moving through guns until you find what you want doesn’t cost much.

I have given this much thought and I think I will start doing it. Flu shots have killed and seriously injured people; that is a fact that isn’t denied by any Doctors I have heard of. The flu kills people; that also is a fact. The only people I have read that tried to discount the numbers of people the flu has killed; count being over 55 as a preexisting condition. That’s crazy. So I roll the dice...

is it a good or bad idea to let a 14 year old visit her mom in jail?
DaveTN replied to 3600's topic in General Chat
I think you should ask a child psychologist. I think this has the potential to cause more problems than 6 months of not seeing her Mom. I think a County mental health facility might talk to you for free. Disclaimer: I’m not a child Psychologist, don’t play one on TV and didn’t sleep at a Holiday Inn last night.
