Of course its revenue generation. The city is going to get its money either through that or my property taxes. I have absolutely no problem with azzhats that can’t drive or those that drive with total disregard for the law (like me when I got my last speeding ticket) paying instead of property owners. If you live in an area where you are more likely to be injured or killed by a “real” criminal instead of a traffic offender; you should think about moving, you live in a very dangerous place. My beef is with cameras, unmanned radar and ghost cars. If there is a big enough problem in an area; put a real cop there in a real marked Police car so people see what is going on. If they don’t see the cop; they aren’t paying attention. I would bet real cops and Police cars cost less than what some cities (like Murfreesboro) is paying these private companies for cameras and such. A cop stopping a careless driver, DUI or your local crack dealer could save your life or that of a family member. Or catch the burglar that is casing your neighborhood.

We didn’t have Tasers when I was a cop. (Ah, the fun I could have had). But this is the second video I have seen where a cop grabbed their gun instead of their taser. I would think that an officer would have their taser on their weak side so it would be different movements than grabbing their gun. The guy was looking for trouble and attacked the Officer. Too bad that young Officer made that mistake. As far as seatbelts go… I was a cop when they passed the seatbelt law. I didn’t wear mine, never stopped a car for it and never wrote a ticket for it. My guess is he had another reason for wanting to stop that vehicle and the seatbelt was just the PC for a stop. But that’s just a WAG.

That’s what they did to me. They told me Illinois was showing a disqualifying charge, but they weren’t allowed to tell me what it was. So I told them it was an arrest over 20 years ago in Illinois for having a gun in my car, it was dismissed, and it was a misdemeanor. They said they don’t know that; it could be a felony in Tennessee. They didn’t say anything about the problem being that it didn’t show a disposition. It was the ATF that told me that; and told me how to fix it.

Steve Dickerson (R-Nashville) to Introduce Red Flag Bill
DaveTN replied to Garufa's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
You haven’t read all my comments or you would see that I’m not arguing for confiscation. I’m saying that if someone says you are threatening them with a firearm or threatening suicide; you are going to have your guns confiscated….period. If you want to oppose laws laying out specific due process with time limits; that’s fine, stick with the existing laws. I don’t know for sure what they are in Tennessee, but I know where I was it would have resulted in confiscation of your guns with little chance of getting them back. I suspect it may be the same here. I sold a gun to a man here. The gun was stolen from his home in a burglary. The gun was recovered and the burglar arrested. The case went to trial and the DA had this man testify that the gun was owned by him and was stolen from his home. The burglar was convicted. The man contacted me and needed another copy of his bill of sale. After having the man testify as to ownership and using that at trial, the DA would not return the gun to the victim of a burglary until he showed proof of ownership. Does that sound like a DA that is going to return a gun to anyone unless he is forced to do so? That would have never happened to a victim where I was; but it happened here. That story has nothing to do with Red Flag issues, but it shows that some DA’s don’t even want to return a gun to a legal owner that is a victim of a crime. I don’t think there is due process now, I know there isn’t in some states, and if a piece of legislation lays out procedures and time frames; it may be worth looking at instead of blanketly rejecting it because it is seen as allowing confiscation, confiscation that already exists. I’ve seized guns in domestic violence cases and seen them seized in mental health cases. The chances of those people getting guns back was slim to none. -

Yeah, that’s usually the case when you see someone from the South in San Diego. I went through Boot Camp and MR class A school in San Diego. Long time ago though; 1971. -

Yes, but only if your pants will stay up. If not, you can’t run from the Police very well.

I think he probably meant the penalty is the same. I think its funny that people need to read a DIY on how to destroy a piece of plastic themselves.
-
Yep, it’s a shame that some folks will probably be made examples of resulting in some serious consequences.

But that’s my point. If I buy a quality gun from S&W, Ruger, Kimber, etc. and it doesn’t function properly out of the box after a thorough cleaning and lube; it goes back. I don’t buy into the “needs break-in” or mag issues. I use WWB as range ammo, that is a proven ammo in the low cost stuff and my guns need to work with it. I had a shield that had problems out of the box. I read all the comments about mags, beak-in etc. I emailed S&W, they sent me a shipping label, the gun was fixed and returned; no more problems. I didn’t return the mags and they didn’t send me any back; mags had nothing to do with it. Should I have had to send it back? Of course not. But guns are mechanically devices and they can have problems. My life can depend on my carry guns, so I’m not going to try to blame everything but the gun; I want the mfg to make it right. Issues with 9mm and short barreled 1911’s are common. My comments were simply that for a new user a full size 1911 in .45ACP by a quality manufacturer should be accurate and trouble free. I looked at a 9mm 1911 for a target gun simply because of ammo cost; knowing it could have problems that would need attention. But when I was looking they wanted more for a 9mm than a .45; that’s crazy. I’m not paying more because they sell less of them. However, those were just my thoughts to a user who is new to the 1911 platform. I’m sure he will do his research on what is suggest here.

In your price range I would check out the Remington R1 Commander. Grab a gun has them for $560 new. I have not owned one, but they get good reviews. Going a little over you budget I would look at the Ruger SR1911 Commander at $742 new. I owned one of those when they first came out in the full size and it was an excellent gun. Plus its stainless. I don’t care for shorter than the full size. Functionality and accuracy suffers, and you are already carrying a big heavy gun, so the .75 additional barrel length really doesn’t matter. Check your prices on new vs. used. Recently I haven’t been able to save enough to justify buying used; but you may find a good deal if you put a “want to buy” ad here.

Welcome, you ex-Navy? -
I wouldn’t use FMJ for carry in a 9MM.
-
Generally when you see NATO; it’s a FMJ round. I say generally because while not required by the NATO standard; it’s required for combat ammo. Nothing wrong with it in most modern firearms; just like with +P check with the manufacturer of your firearm.

Steve Dickerson (R-Nashville) to Introduce Red Flag Bill
DaveTN replied to Garufa's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
But that’s my point, aren’t these laws attempting to create due process? Its been a lot of years since I was a Police Officer, but due process was whatever I decided it o be at the time. Things are worse now, cops aren’t going to leave someone in their home with guns after they had made threats; the liability is too high. We just a case a few months ago where that happened, the result was several people dead. Some here blamed the cops and the social workers called to the scene for not making an arrest or taking the guns. Yet some of them also say the Red Flag laws are a violation of their rights. You can't have it both ways; and it isn't going to be. There was not good grounds for making an arrest; there was grounds for taking the guns. The cops and the social workers failed. Would it have made a difference in the final outcome? Who knows. But I’m sure that is impacting cops and mental health workers decisions all over the country. I understand that some people are afraid family members may lie. That may well happen, but that is a situation they created. I’m not supporting any specific piece of legislation. I’m just saying that due process should be immediate and the accused should have a right to be heard immediately and if a decision is made they are not a threat; their guns returned. People think they can lie to cops and get away with it. (Many don’t understand filing a false Police report is a crime; usually a felony.) They are less likely to lie under oath, and more of the story can be heard when the accused is allowed to testify and ask questions of their accusers. I have zero tolerance for someone that threatens another person. And when that happens; they lose their guns. But that is what happens now and in many cases when the accusers don’t show up for a hearing or the court determines there is no real threat; the accused have a hard time getting their guns back, if they ever do. That isn’t right. -
Replacement QD Mount For Burris AR-332
DaveTN replied to ShaggyRS6's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
I have nothing to add, but am confused. Does PISCH=POS? Is the mount not a Burris, and is the mount from Midwest something different? I had never seen that mount that lets you add a FF3. That’s the route I would want to go. -
I have owned most of the main brands of 1911’s other than the imports. Some things I would recommend: 1. Since it’s a range gun, full size and adjustable sights are a must. Either buy one that has them or plan on adding them. 2. Since it’s your first 1911; buy new. 1911’s are great firearms but they are drama queens. They require cleaning and lube…period. If you get one Bubba has been in; you could have problems. If you have issues you need to be clear on the history. The sights and barrels on semi-autos move independently of each other. So on target guns, 1911’s run tight tolerances on the barrel bushings and slides so they repeat to the same position. They have to be clean and lubed to do that. 3. Go with .45. It is the round a 1911 was designed around. It’s a big heavy slide and needs that power to operate properly; 9mm is not reliable. If you want that type gun in 9mm; buy a Browning Hi Power (You will be much happier) 4. Your $1000 budget will allow you to get a high quality 1911. Smith & Wesson, Kimber, Springfield, Dan Wesson, Ruger all have quality offerings. Pick any one of those names and you will hear both good and bad. My recommendation would be a Smith & Wesson SW1911. I see that they no longer show anything with adjustable sights on their website other than the “Performance Center”. It appears to me they are playing fast and loose with the Performance Center name now. So I don’t know it would be worth the extra money. I bought an M&P that was supposed to be a Performance Center gun. My feelings are that if it was ever in the Performance center it was just on a cart passing through. That was my one bad experience with Smith & Wesson in over 40 years and over 100 guns; but they never made it right. There are still some models available on the web that have target sights. Like S&W 108284. Kimber would be my second choice. I have never had a bad Kimber. For me; guns come and go, so I try what I want. If I don’t like it or want something else I move on. Wanting a 1911 for the range and not wanting to carry that big heavy brick will make you a happy 1911 guy. Good luck with your search.

Prexactly. That’s what I’ve been saying when all these issues are being argued about signs, etc. Or someone posts that we need a law like… (fill in with the name of some state that isn’t Constitutional Carry) But it is usually explained to me that we need to take “Baby steps”. Our Baby Step time is over and we don’t need to copy some other states law; we just need Constitutional Carry. Our state legislators just don’t want to acknowledge a right to bear arms. My guess is that is because of the tourist and convention business. Nashville makes a lot of money off conventions.

That is the reason for doing it. But the laws and procedures vary by state and sometimes even by County. Some places purge the records from “their” system. Some places simply “seal” them. So it depends on who is doing the background check and why. Most places that have a big concern about it don’t ask if you have been convicted of a crime, they ask if you have ever been arrested, then ask you to list them and give the disposition. I was arrested in Illinois for having a gun in my car. The case was dismissed; I wasn’t convicted. I never had a problem until years later when I came to Tennessee. TBI told me an arrest was showing but said they couldn’t tell me what it was. The ATF told me what it was and how to get it removed. I jumped through the hoops and got it done. But they told me to hang onto the documentation as it could show up again. An expungement will work for some stuff, but is not a guarantee something won’t show up.

That’s too bad Doug. But maybe it will be better being closer to family. Good Luck.

39-17-1309 outlaws carrying at schools and on school grounds. 49-50-803 allows private K-12 schools to adopt a handgun carry policy. It gives specific instructions on how that is done and contains this statement: “If a private K-12 school does not adopt a handgun carry policy in accordance with subsection (a), then the carrying or possession of a firearm is prohibited in accordance with § 39-17-1309.” 49-7-161 is basically the same for private institutions of higher education and contains the statement: “If a private institution does not adopt a handgun carry policy in accordance with subsection (a), then the carrying or possession of a firearm is prohibited in accordance with § 39-17-1309.” So it appears to me a pre-school falls under 39-17-1309. A private school K and above could fall under one of the other statutes but the parents should know that because they would have been given a written copy of the policy. However, anyone concerned about this needs to either read all the pertinent laws, ask the school administration, or the school Police Officer. These can be serious charges and can be very expensive to defend yourself. This is more than carrying past a sign. It won’t matter what you read somewhere. All the laws for Tennessee are available on Lexis at the link I put in my post above.

Its illegal if day care is considered school, or if the daycare is on school property. It is banned in both public and private schools and school grounds. With an HCP you can have a gun in the car while picking up and dropping off, but you can’t handle it while on school property. Here is a link to the law, so you can see what you think… https://advance.lexis.com/documentpage/?pdmfid=1000516&crid=3415f0fe-98d0-480b-a2de-3cdb4612b7e4&nodeid=ABNAAOAANAAJ&nodepath=%2FROOT%2FABN%2FABNAAO%2FABNAAOAAN%2FABNAAOAANAAJ&level=4&haschildren=&populated=false&title=39-17-1309.+Carrying+weapons+on+school+property.&config=025054JABlOTJjNmIyNi0wYjI0LTRjZGEtYWE5ZC0zNGFhOWNhMjFlNDgKAFBvZENhdGFsb2cDFQ14bX2GfyBTaI9WcPX5&pddocfullpath=%2Fshared%2Fdocument%2Fstatutes-legislation%2Furn%3AcontentItem%3A50J2-V4S0-R03M-D4G5-00008-00&ecomp=k357kkk&prid=f25dff4a-191d-47fa-88c8-4efab811c8d6

Question about out of state visitors?
DaveTN replied to Grayfox54's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
Nothing. You can be a suspicious person that the Police check out with or without a gun. I don’t see where carrying a gun would have much impact unless some other law was being violated or you are a prohibited person. Whether or not you have to ID depends on the laws of the state you are in.
