  1. Did your insurance pay out a bodily injury claim? You can do a Google search and see stories that put the increase all over the place. It depends on what state you are in, property damage vs. bodily injury, how long you have been with the company, etc. One story I looked at put Allstate at the lowest increase and State Farm at the highest. Another story put Tennessee at an average of 31%. The stories and articles don’t make sense; other than to show the insurance companies pretty much do whatever they like.
  2. Good topic for a thread. I think we have all thought about switching at one time or another to save money. I’ve been with State Farm for 48 years. Over those years I’ve had 2 or 3 vehicle claims and 2 or 3 home owners claims. I’ve never had any drama; they just pay it and we move on. I know I could get lower costs, but I’ve seen so many stories of people either having a bunch of drama to collect or the companies telling them some things are covered, that they thought were.
  3. A note for those of you who may need more cloud storage than the free stuff offers… I run several desktops, laptops, and tablets. I needed to upgrade my Microsoft Office and was always struggling with the amount of installs I could do with the standard options. I also wanted some cloud storage, but the free stuff didn’t offer enough space. I recently switched to Officer 365 for 6 users. Each user gets 1TB of OneDrive (6TB total) and each user can install on 5 devices (30 total). That’s a pretty good deal for $100 a year. Break that cost up with friends or family members and its really cheap. OneDrive is a simple interface with File Explorer and makes it easy to swap files between my desktop and laptop, without a network.
  4. Altering or removing VIN's is a felony under Federal law. However that same law allows it under certain circumstances. Such as a scrap processor, or when repairs require the removal. If you are looking at a vehicle that is in fairly decent shape and the vin plate has been removed or messed with; its probably a stolen vehicle. A lot of vehicles have the VIN in other places besides the VIN plate.
  5. I have a couple of external hard drives and several portable hard drives. I use Acronis for system back-ups. I believe in redundancy in back-ups. Too many people don’t learn about the need for back-ups until it is too late. Your chances of a hard drive failure or you doing something wrong are far greater than fire or theft. My parents are in another state. I maintain their computers and back-ups remotely with the free version of TeamViewer. That’s something you and your Grandson might want to look into.
  6. Sounds like your Grandson has you all fixed up….Good for him.
  7. I can't see inside them, but it looks like there were some excellent deals there. I can see why one company bought most of them. Does everyone else's pictures show up all scrunched up?
  8. Who is your internet provider? Do they offer anything?
  9. I find it amusing that a company owned by Michael Bloomberg would be running a story about the financial hit Dicks has taken. I’ve seen so many gun stores it takes a lot to impress me. I saw my first Field & Stream store a couple of years ago. I must say it was very impressive. Prices were high, but they had everything in stock and on display. I don’t see how those stores will survive this. I went to the Field & Stream site to see if they were offering AR’s. They are not, but they are offering a Mini-14. I did some quick research on Stack to see how a single individual could be allowed to destroy a company like this while a board of directors and investors do nothing but stand by and watch. Seems he owns 20% of the company and controls 2/3 of the voting shares (or did in 2010).
  10. I just looked and they make a Glock 22 Gen 5; they just don’t offer it here yet. I’m just really surprised to see Ruger leave us .40S&W shooters out. But hey, whatever they think is best for them.
  11. Don’t let it bother you man. It used to bother me and came very to close to getting me banned here. Now I try very hard to address the issues being discussed without posting any judgements about why the person is making the statements they are making. We won’t change the minds of any cop haters. I often wonder what happened to them to have that much hate. You and I both know something may have happened to them to cause that hate. Having been a Police Officer I try to help the people that are asking questions understand what is going on and what is going to happen based on my experience. This is the internet, everyone offers their opinions and it is up to the reader to decide if what they are reading makes sense. I hate to see young people get bad information, sometimes from their parents, that will get the kids jammed up, simply because their parents hate cops. Parents owe their kids better than that.
  12. So Ruger doesn’t make any 40’s anymore? I don’t even see the SR40 on their website.
  13. There are so many things wrong in that video, but nothing to do with talking to the Police. If anything cooperating with them and telling them what it was will probably get her a higher award if she gets punitive damages in her civil case. Three months for the crime lab to test a drug when the suspect is being held in jail is a problem. $1M in bail is a problem. Using a product you have been made aware can give a false positive for Cotton candy, headache powder, breath mints, or other common items, and then holding someone in jail based on that test, is not only a problem; it should be a Federal Civil Rights violation. That problem can be laid right at the feet of one person; the Sheriff or Chief allowing it. Its another case where the Feds will have to step in and tell that person they are incapable of running a Law Enforcement Agency.
  14. On a lighter note I can’t count the number of times I’ve told a suspect “You have the right to remain silent; please use it.”
  15. CHL, as a former Police Officer I’ve said the same things you are saying many times here. Ignorance of the system and how it works makes it easier for some to listen to the “Never talk to the cops” non-sense. It’s as important a part of their training as understanding when you are and are not justified in the use of deadly force. Based on your comments I assume you discuss it in your classes. It’s been discussed here many, many times. It’s easier for some to just believe that whatever an attorney tells them to do; they do. I would agree with that if the attorney is YOUR attorney and is talking about YOUR set of specific circumstances. I don’t know how many times I’ve had an accused in a criminal case refuse to make a statement during my investigation. I have told them “You need to call them right now; they will want you to talk to me.” If a person believes that the cops are out to get them; then by all means, refuse to speak and get cuffed and stuffed. If you are innocent you will have a great story later on about how the cops arrested you for no reason. You’ll want to tell that story a lot because you probably will have paid a lot for the privilege of telling it. The truth is that from the first cops on the scene through the investigators, DA, and Judge or jury; people are going to be making decisions that will impact your freedom and your family’s financial future. If you are innocent and it makes sense to impede them in any way possible; make sure you have an attorney that you can contact any time of the day or night. If you are guilty of a crime, or you believe your shoot is questionable; by all means wait to get an attorney. You can find cases of people that were arrested, or what you believe to be wrongly convicted. But I doubt many of those cases were because they made a statement; although it could happen. The bottom line is knowing the law, knowing your situation and knowing that no one, not even your attorney, will be held responsible for the decisions you make. It’s all on you.
  16. It doesn’t look like he has been to prison yet. It appears there is a plea agreement with sentencing next month.
  17. She didn’t answer your question in detail because it wouldn’t be what you want to hear. I believe she supports the gun rights of law abiding gun owners. Red flag laws address people who make violent threats. She isn’t going to say she is against that. At most she would say there are already laws in place to address that. Which is true there are. And they have little or no due process; the cops will take your guns and you will have little chance of getting them back. Fighting these changes that specify due process makes no sense to me. If you see this as anti-gun then vote against these changes and leave them the way they are. If you are caught up in this you will lose your guns.
  18. I have zero experience with a chest holster, but plenty with a shoulder holster, so my comment is I would want a thumb break. But it looks like leather with a thumb break run around ~$120. I think something as heavy as a Super Black Hawk could go flying right out of an unsecured Kydex holster. But if you don’t make any moves that could cause that; it might be fine. Just a comment; its worth what you paid for it.
  19. For me, its not an issue of liability. This thread is the Good/Bad of NATO rounds. In my opinion the good is they are usually FMJ which makes them cheaper for range use, the bad is they aren’t a good choice for a self-defense round.
  20. It’s domestic violence and aggravated assault if he makes that threat with a deadly weapon. I would have felony charges on him and do what I could to find him and arrest him. Or, I would have to be able to articulate why I failed to act. I don't know what the rules are for the Governor. Did the felon tell the Governor he was going to cause harm when he gets released; and was that threat creditable? Point is… sure you are going to find cops that will walk away or wring their hands about what to do. But I doubt you will find many.
  21. I use a secure holster with a thumb break so I can do back flips on the dance floor when I'm out clubbing.
  22. Exactly. A regular 2D printer would suffice.
  23. Failure to act on a valid complaint won’t be covered by Qualified Immunity. Not to mention the guilt most would feel for someone being allowed to commit murder because they failed to act. Who wants to go through that?
  24. Our traffic Judges had a little speech they gave at the beginning of each session. Part of that speech included that Radar had been proven in their courtroom and they would not put it on trial again. However, they said they would allow the defendant or their attorney to ask whatever questions they wanted to about the calibration, certification, of the unit or the training of the Officer. They also said that Radar was an aid for what an Officer observed. They wouldn’t convict if the Officer didn’t testify he had a clear view of the target vehicle and observed its speed. You get pretty good at estimating speed. We use to have bets and we were usually pretty close to what the radar showed. I feel I was lucky to be in a highly trained well respected Police Department with a respected court system. However….I have said this before and I will say it again. If you have to go to court you will get exactly the amount of justice you can afford. Someone mentioned what happened in Chicago yesterday; that is what happened. I said in the thread when that happened that the Cook County States Attorney was not going to want to prosecute that case. Then she said recused herself. I can assure you that the decision being handed down without consulting with the Police or the Mayors Officer in this high profile case would not have happened without her consent. Recused my butt.
  25. I would guess there are Officers that do that. I know there were people that took my tickets to court that said that was the case. Like you, we had a quota. It was called an “acceptable standard”; same thing different name. Ours was 10 tickets a month for a District car (1 every other shift) and 100 a month for a traffic car (5 a shift). Pretty simple to do without making stuff up. Plus I didn’t like going to court even though it was overtime; so I wrote good tickets. I worked a traffic car for 2 years and trained traffic Officers for year. I hated it an was really glad to get out into a District car. I saw the worst stuff I have ever seen in my life working traffic. EDIT: And I’ll add this.. Our States attorneys that handled traffic settled a lot of tickets without court. Dismissed, pay the fine with no points, probation, etc. Our traffic court Judges were pretty straight, they listened and if they thought a person had a good case, and that person didn’t think they did anything wrong; they dismissed it.
