  1. EMP is what I believe to be the biggest possible big SHTF scenario. There is the direct threat of a nuke popped in the atmosphere but solar flares can to the same thing. It does pay to prepare and I hope that no EMP type event ever occurs. I travel for a living and could be a long way from home with the U.S. goes black. In an instant we would back to the 1800's. When you actually begin to think that scenario all the way through it's pretty stark.
  2. For those of you that are SKS fans I picked up a nice one this week. I've been looking at this in a shop in Arkansas for almost 2 years. It had a 30rd mag and a jacked up receiver cover with a bubba'd scope mount. What caught my eye was the laminate stock...China did not make many and this is a beauty. Long story short, I had cash and they priced it for less than I was going to offer. I said I'll take it as long as we can swap the aftermarket parts for factory parts from you other SKSs. They had a bunch of bubba mis-matches so it did not affect any matching numbered guns. The laminate is fine grained and tight. This was a good trip. I found tins of 7.62x54r for 125.50 out the door. .22LR 525rd Federal for $23 and .22mag ammo for $12 a box. Here she is on the right next to my other para rescue.
  3. I had 91/30s from the Tula Arsenal from 1920 through 1944 consecutive years. I had M44s from the trial year of 1943 through the last year of production 1948. I had Remington built M91s and New England Westinghouse built M91s.
  4. About to wrap up my trip...picked up the laminate Chinese Paratrooper today...I don't have a slot for it so I am going to have move one of it's sisters. Local shop has got some AKs I'll probably take my extra and trade it on another AK. I'm happy about the Para...rarely rarely do you ever see a Chinese Laminate SKS stock. 99% of the laminate stocks are Russian. Here's a quick pic or two:
  5. I am going to take my NIB SF out this weekend and see how it performs compared to my first SA. I really really like the SA.
  6. Guys I appreciate the information. My targets have arrived and I will set them up and try them out this weekend. I will take all safety precautions. Thanks!

    N-Range

BATF requires bars on all entries. If they have been hit 3 times without taking steps BATF may pull their license.
  8. Almost forgot....Academy Sports over here has got Federal .22LR 525rd boxes for $23. That is stupid cheap for .22LR. I bought three boxes. They also had .22Mag for $12 per box. Got a few of those as well.
  9. It's been a good week so far in Arkansas...scored a few .50 cal ammo cans for $9 each like new. Found a local shop this morning with 440rd tins of Russian 7.62x54r on sale for $127 each. I told them I'd buy two if I got a discount. Got two tins for $251 OTD. Gotta keep the VEPR fed. I've got an eye on a Chinese Paratroop SKS....can't make up my mind if I want to bring it home or not.
  10. My primary handguns are Beretta M9/92FS. Very pleased with them and their performance. My secondary are the Canik TP9 series. Premium function at an economy price. My carry pistol is a M&P 9 shield.
  11. I'm heading over to Arkansas this week. I've got several milsurp watering holes to visit. In addition to the gambit of surplus firearms there are always stocks, slings, pouches and mags too.
  12. Sorry if this is the wrong place for this. I have a couple of steel gongs ordered for shooting at home. My intention is practice pistol shooting with these. I have only previously shot at steel plates at 100yds with a rifle. What are safety dos/donts when setting up and using these. Any and all advice is welcome. Thank you in advance!
  13. Nice rebate...I bought a S&W Shield over 6 weeks ago and still haven't received my rebate check. Called them and they had my info on file but stated it would be 7-8 more weeks. I hope Walther is quicker...
  14. This is cool....it's a dagger with a removable handle...remove the handle and screw in any standard threaded mop/broom handle and you've got a solid spear. Regular 24.99 in the bargain bin for 8.99. I got two. Just could not resist myself.
  15. Yep...travelers in the road in a SHTF situation will face much more peril than those in a static position. i figure that when a real event occurs we will have a slight "grace period" between the time the event starts and the general population figures out that the government is not coming to the rescue. Maybe 3 days in a densely populated area and maybe 7-10 days in rural areas before the people start looking to loot and pillage. I live in the sticks and I'd rather take my chances at home.
  16. Yes they are edible. If I had to choose between Cracker Barrel and an MRE I'd go with Cracker Barrel. However, I came into a free supply of a couple dozen cases a few years ago. I had just started a new job and didn't have a lot of money...so I took an MRE for lunch every day for the first 2 or 3 months. Some stuff was better than others but they are not bad. There is a lot to eat in a standard MRE pack. A little salt and hot sauce most of it tasted pretty good.
  17. The MG42 was a one-of-akind lol. Believe it or not it's a Ruger 10/22 in a dress up kit. The ammo is belted dummy .223. It was a cool looking .22. This was the main room and all of the cabinets were full, the 91/30 crate was in my bedroom and other rifles stashed in nooks crannies, under the bed, behind book cases, etc.
  18. The Mountain House freeze dried stuff has a shelf life of 25yrs in the #10 cans. 7 to 10 years in the pouches. MREs....its a crap shoot exactly how long they are edible... The mountain house products are actually pretty durn good tasting. The Wise stuff that I tried gave me "bubble guts" and cleaned out the colon pretty good. The Wise products are extremely bland too. Of course we keep extra can goods as already mentioned above. Being somewhat extra cautious, I have put back many jars of rice and beans. Sealed properly they will keep for decades as well. Short term problems I would start with the pantry and MREs. Longer term, I'd begin to mix in the dry/dehydrated stuff with fresh meat. As far as a "need" for food that lasts 40 years? I don't have a "need" but I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
  19. At one time I collected Mosins by production year and Arsenal....I had an office/gunroom and I was like a hog in slop. Mosins, Mausers, SKSs, AKs, Oh My! I've narrowed my collection way way down as I am getting older....found these pics and thought I'd share them.
  20. Gerbers...I've got the older kind that you can open, operate and put away with one hand. I got my first one as a gift...bought my second when I broke a knife blade prying up a piece of hardwood....I keep mine on my hip 24/7.
  21. Military ammo cans for sure. I have had to buy some of the walmart/harbor freight plastic ones for shotgun shells. I have had to get creative through the years as while I do not consider myself a "hoarder" I have ammo cans stashed around in several places. I wish I could dedicate a storage building or room for my ammo cans.
  22. That is the factory handguard. It has the little rail which works great with a pistol light. It's got iron sights...but the dust cover is hinged and there is a factory rail mounted on the top of the cover. For the price it's a nice package. The Kick-light stock was less than $90. Not as much aftermarket stuff available for it yet but Century sells factory 10rd mags which is nice. Most of the hi-cap mags for the Saiga are aftermarket. Saiga and CAT mags are not interchangeable without modification.
  23. The Catamount is the one on the left.

    AK Shotguns

Yep...I'm one of 'those people'. I started with a Saiga-12 back when they first arrived. Awesome shotgun. I've got a Russian folding stock on it and tri-rail fore end. With a 20rd drum it's absolutely fun to shoot. I ran across a few Catamount Furys last year. What I liked the most was the price - 449 NIB with 5 mags. I read up on them and bought one (Fury 1) from a shop in Paris. The Catamount is Century arms version of the Saiga-12. It's Chinese. The finish was not anywhere near as good as the Saiga. I had to slick up the action a bit to get it to run smooth. Now she runs like a scalded dog with most ammo. I recently purchased a Kick-Lite stock for it and it works well. Looks good too. I would love to have a VEPR-12 but the $850+up price tag keeps me grounded.
