  1. It may not be the end of the world as we know it but I spent 35+ years in the deep south; certain parts of our collective citizenry is on government assistance. There are probably similar numbers in Memphis and Jackson for sure. In the event that we were lose power even for a little bit those individuals that get their money and food on the government debit cards will likely get sideways. Case in point: Atlanta, Georgia: Clayton county had a 'glitch' that resulted in no EBT deposits or Medicaid. This is footage from the local news channel, edited to not show the people beating on the windows and screaming at the employees. It was a couple day delay and people were about to riot. Let the power grid drop for a week in large cities and look out.
  2. http://www.truthandaction.org/nsa-chief-must-start-preparing-inevitable-loss-power-grid/ Part of the text: NSA Chief: We Must Start Preparing for the Inevitable Loss of our Power Grid What would happen under the circumstances of a cyberattack targeted towards America? Would people go Mad Max crazy? In Ted Koppel’s book “Lights Out” he explains that if the power grid were to go down due to cyberattack, it would go down for not only days, but for weeks or even months resulting in millions of people dying due to mass starvation. Recently, National Security Agency (NSA) Director Admiral Michael Rogers warned listeners at a cyber-security conference that the threat isn’t a matter of “if“ it will happen, but “when.“ He used the example in which hackers in Ukraine used the Black Energy cyber-weapon to knock out the lights on more than 200,000 people across the region. While speaking at the RSA Conference in San Francisco, he warned the audience that this will not be the “last we are going to see of this.“ Read more on page two to find out what NSA Director Rogers thinks is the best plan in order to stop any cyberattacks from occurring in the U.S.
  3. Picked these up Friday. First up is a nice used MAK. First pic is how she came home and the second is in regular furniture. The other is NIB, which is rare to find these days. Better quality that the new stuff on the market for sure. Finding two in the same place at the same time is seldom at best. These were not "steals" but comparable in price to the C39 stuff. These are some of the best quality AK examples that were ever imported in the country.
  4. Direct Hit Guns in Jackson. I've bought several guns there as well as raiding the bargain bins. Good prices good people.
  5. Stopped in at one of my local favorites yesterday. They've got a rack of bargain bins that have an odd assortment of odds and ends. A few months ago, they had some 8 round M&P sheild 9 mags, in the box, seal intact. How much? $20 apiece. Sold I said. Forward to today. Found 4 more in the sealed boxes. How much? $10 apiece. These things are $39 at any other retail outlet locally. I should have played the lottery.
  6. Born in Kentucky; lived in Macon Georgia 35 years or so...after a divorce moved back to Kentucky, met a Tennessee gal and got married again and now reside in Tennessee. Spent 20+ years in production management, currently working in the independent adjusting industry (since 2005)- mainly marketing work. Grew up shooting but really caught the bug in the 90's. Held a C&R for a while, piled up a large collection and really enjoy the little group of firearms that I have left.
  7. Well as you said - it depends on what you have around. Assuming that you had no time to prep and nothing prepared your options would be slim. Probably the best that most could do would be create obstacles to block "walkers" or impede progress of "bad guys". Falling trees, using vehicles, barb wire, sharpened poles, etc. One would have to keep in mind that obstacles such as vehicles creates cover for an "enemy" force. If I could wave a magic wand, I'd have a conex container compound on a small cleared hill surrounded by fencing topped with Razor wire. Inside of that would be obstacles, barb wire, pungi pits with a clear field of fire. If it's solid, defensible and safe someone else will want it. AND you can lose all of those preps in heartbeat when a large better armed opposing force shows up. In TWD, the prison was a great location with the following exception: it was too big to defend the entire perimeter. Even if there was not a tank involved, the fence could have been breached. Minus the tank, the Gov's people would never have got into the inner compound. They would have paid a high price in casualties to breach two fences without a tank. What was it General Patton said? "Fixed fortifications is a monument to the stupidity of man." On the same token, Gov's force could have laid seige and picked them off one by one. Water source was outside the fence.
  8. Well, I don't know about arming strangers....in a SHTF there is inherent danger in that. However it would be prudent to have enough like weapons to arm immediate family with. In a real crisis where you may have to defend your self the typical hodge-podge of guns at the house would not mount a very good defense. In laws may have a couple of .22s and 2 boxes of ammo are "a whole lot of bullets". Nephew may have a couple of hunting rifles of different calibers and nothing semi-auto. You can't lay down a volume of fire with a bolt action .270. I've never been a reloader but my focus has always been on milsurp stuff so the ammo (until recently) has always been cheap. My rule of thumb has been when you shoot 500 rds of anything, replace it with a thousand rds so you are always building stock. Truthfully, my little stash is built more out of a fear of an import ban or ammo purchase restrictions than necessarily SHTF. However, in either case it pays to have some stock. At the time I started heavily into the surplus stuff you could buy ammo way cheaper than you could reload. SKSs and AKs are ideal SHTF rifles (IMO) because (1) they work and (2) you have to put serious effort into making them not work (3) an illiterate peasant can operate and maintain them (4) accuracy is acceptable (5) the intermediate range .30 caliber bullet will do some damage (6) same caliber Now, pricewise as it has been pointed out ARs are now cheaper than AKs but everything I have been told ARs are much more picky that AKs as far as ammo. AKs are built to eat and spit any kind of ammo in the correct caliber. Steel case, corroded steel case, rusty steel case, brass case, it don't matter. Rifles need to share common ammo and magazines....same for pistols....having the exact same models and set ups allows for parts exchange in the event of failures. I pick up .22LR when I can when it's a screaming deal. 12ga stuff - I've got a load of 00 buck. I pick up a box of 1350fps target loads for the AK 12's every trip to walmart. It cycles without issues and 6 and 7 shot is devastating at home defense ranges.
  9. Nice! Looking forward to seeing the finished product.
  10. Well my 4 7.62x54r VEPR mags arrived today! I got lucky in getting them as cheap as I did. They were on sale and have already gone back up in price since the announcement of the ban.

    Latest AKs

Probably my last AK acquirement for a while. These are both GP 10/63 Wasrs. Built with Military parts with the exception of the receiver. I consider these to be the best quality WASRs ever brought in. I got one of these at a shop I used to frequent in a neighboring state. It had a flare launcher and a slide fire stock and "tacticool" optics and rails. I made them an offer for the gun minus the flare launcher and slide fire stock.(You don't need one to bump fire an AK) One pic shows it as I saw it the first time. It is the one on the right in the dark hardwood stock. The other pickup was sort of accidental. I went to a local shop yesterday and they had a used WASR on the wall. I looked and lo and behold it was GP 10/63. I looked at the trunnion date and it was 1966- my birth year. So I brought it home. I put some SAR- forewood on it with palm swells. I just poly'd the stock so the sheen would sort of match the fore end. I've got two AK 74 style brakes coming Monday to finish them out. Very pleased with these two. They work like they are supposed to as well.
  12. Well I guess I ordered my spare mags just in time. They will probably triple in price if/when you can find them going forward.
  13. Stopped in a few shops between Tennessee and Florida. Sold an SKS and found a good price on a GP WASR. Looked at a beat up M48 Mauser at a pawn shop in Dickson. $699. What?? Back in Jackson this afternoon I found another decent priced GP WASR with a trunnion date of my birth year. Of course I did lol. It came with a Yugoslav BHO magazine. Very happy with good finds as of late.
  14. If I read this correctly no new VEPRs due Russia sanctions. Hopefully they will find a loophole so they will resume imports. I've got a 762x54r Vepr and I waited almost too long to order extra mags. Got 4 factory 5 rd mags coming Monday. Whoop whoop! There are some aftermarket 10rd mags out there but I've read mixed reviews. The factory mags are reliable.
  15. Ramjo, strangely enough I've never had an affinity for the straight pull rifles. The little Steyrs look like a monster to shoot. They hardest shooting rifle I ever bought milsurp wise was a 91/59. It hurt so bad I traded it after 5 rounds. No joke. It's the same size as an M44 or M38 but for whatever reason it kicked 3x harder.
  16. I buy most of my bulk ammo from Sportmans Guide. I'm a buyers club member. The last order I placed I got 1000rds Wolf 7.62x39FMJ for $199 with free shipping. Order more than $150 worth of anything and you can split the total cost into 4 months of payments. My last order was pretty big. I ordered pistol tac lights, steel gongs, the ammo and half a dozen Canik magazines. https://www.sportsmansguide.com/
  17. the 91/30s shoot lighter than the M38,M44, M91/59 carbines. 100 rounds through any Mosin carbines in a range day will leave a mark lol. Well, the Turkish 8mm surplus ammo is hot. But it goes bang every time. Ive got Turk, Yugo mainly and some Romanian steel case stuff. These all are less punishing than the Turk. Some say the Turk was supposed to be machine gun ammo. I can believe it.
  18. For years I collected Mosin Nagants by arsenal and production year. I made the decision last year to get completely out of the Mosin collecting. I told myself that my shoulder would appreciate the break lol. Since I have "a little" 7.62x54r laying around I figured I needed a VEPR in 7.62x54r to use up the ammo :-) but that's for another forum. The only two bolts I have left are two Mausers. One is a Yugo K98 with beautiful wood. It's dead accurate. My other K98 is German Nazi marked Russian Capture. Its VG+ and I've never fired it. Al swastikas and waffenamps are intact. For whatever reason the Mausers are not as punishing to shoot as the Mosins. I'm concentrating these days in semi auto rifles and every time I ponder moving these last two Mausers I get them out and say "No. Can't do it." i never got into the Italian stuff and I have owned a couple of French MAS bolts through the years but they never really bit me with the bug like Mosins and Mausers.
  19. It's an XTS sub compact tactical light. It's got solid beam and strobe. I got it from Sportsman guide: https://www.sportsmansguide.com/product/index/xts-subcompact-tac-light?a=1564505 It works great and doesn't break the bank. Light is brighter than I expected plenty for the house and it even reaches most all of my yard at night. i get quite a bit of stuff from Sportsmans Guide. They've got surplus, survival, guns, ammo, gear and really good sales.
  20. I take the threat of EMP serious enough that my wife and I have discussed and have in place an emergency plan to get home from work in the event of an EMP. She works 30+ miles from home. I figure in an EMP event, we will 2 days minimum before panic sets in; maybe a week before the sheeple realize the gub'ment aint coming to help. We've gone over it and the good thing about my wife she understands the need to be prepared and takes such things pretty seriously. My kids do as well but her daughter looks at us if we have six heads and ten eyes when we discuss anything related to emergency preparedness.
  21. My first emergency packs ended up being medium and large ALICE packs. I had every thing needed to survive for a few weeks or a month. One day I realized that I was carrying waaaay too much. Off the top of my head, here's what I've got in my trunk bag: Poncho, first aid kit, fire starters, knife, multi tool, light sticks, some sealed MRE granola bricks, wool socks, wool glove liners, skoal can size survival kit, multi tool, British emergency shelter kit (lightweight tough tarp, stakes, tie downs), thin steel wire and compass. Oh, and some .22LR and a few 9mm sealed in plastic skoal cans. I have one in my wife's vehicle for her. Sort of same set up but I make her keep a pair of tennis shoes in the trunk in the event she has to abandon the vehicle.
  22. I put a light on my SA last week.
  23. Found another Para this week:
  24. I fear that we are reaping 8 years of Obama's promoting of lawlessness, anarchy and divisiveness. I share the fear for the potentially renewed call for gun bans.
