  1. Tennessee Gun Owners Newsletter May, 2018 This issue sponsored by The Shooters Nation Podcast. Legislative Updates... HB2550 Requires Board of Education to Develop Firearms Education Course Tennessee had a huge second amendment win in April that got very little mainstream news coverage. On May 3rd Governor Haslam signed HB2550 into law. This bill requires the State Board of Education to develop a firearms education course as an elective for high school students. The course will include history, mathematics and the science related to firearms along with firearms safety. Representative Dawn White from Murfreesboro and Senator Dolores Gresham with District 26 in Mid-West Tennessee sponsored this bill. This is great news for Tennessee High School students who will soon have the opportunity to choose to learn more about the mechanics behind firearms and proper safety techniques as part of their curriculum. We hope the demand for this class will encourage our lawmakers to expand this bill to include firearms education and safety to our middle schools and even elementary schools. Safety education saves lives. http://wapp.capitol.tn.gov/apps/BillInfo/Default.aspx?BillNumber=HB2550 HB2370 Allows Option for Concealed Carry For Posted Locations On April 24th Governor Haslam signed HB2370 into law. This new law allows Tennessee business owners, individuals and even government entities to allow the concealed carry of handguns by handgun carry permit holders only while still prohibiting other weapons and open carry. Representative James VanHuss and Senator Rusty Crowe from the Johnson City area sponsored the bill. If you have any friends that are business owners in Tennessee it would be a great time to let them know about this new law that would allow them to support the second amendment. This legislation is especially helpful for franchise owners who might feel pressure from corporate offices to keep their properties posted. http://wapp.capitol.tn.gov/apps/BillInfo/default.aspx?BillNumber=HB2370&GA=110 In the News... Vehicle Thefts Leading to Kidnapping Cases There have been two recent cases of cars being stolen with children in the backseat in the Nashville area. Thankfully in these cases all of the children were found safe and unharmed but as we know from other incidents that is not always the case. Stay alert out there and be sure to take your keys with you when leaving your vehicle. Running vehicles are an easy target and so far no arrests have been made in these cases. http://fox17.com/news/local/search-for-suspects-ongoing-after-two-nashville-cases-of-vehicles-stolen-with-kids-inside Kids Summer Camp Opportunity: If you have a 5th-9th grade student interested in shooting sports and looking for summer activities Tennessee Shooting Sports teams up with the UT Extension 4-H program to present Target Smart Camp every summer. 2. I'll paste a copy of it here, if I can. You might also check your spam folder. I sent it to anyone who'd logged into the site in the past two years.
  3. Thanks for the kind words. My wife did all of the research and put that newsletter together after hearing my lament, one too many times, that I really needed to do a newsletter for TGO. She'll be happy to hear that it was well received.
  4. All; After reviewing the metrics and looking once again at how I can ensure that I am able to provide the most stable and consistent experience to our members regardless of what platform they are using to visit the site, I am making the decision to no longer participate in the Tapatalk network. The recent software upgrade from IPBoard once again broke Tapatalk and the Tapatalk developers were once again incredibly slow to keep up with the IPBoard development cycle. I've never allowed Tapatalk to delay the installation of critical security fixes on TGO's software, and have rarely allowed it to delay us from using newer and more improved versions of our software. It is perhaps helpful to put this into perspective: TGO does not run on Tapatalk. TGO runs on IPBoard. Tapatalk wasn't our platform, it was a convenience and for a few years a bit of a necessity until IPBoard caught up with mobile technology. The developers of IPBoard have made tremendous headway in providing a feature-rich and easy to use mobile version of the software, which functions great inside of your phone's mobile browser whether you are using an Apple iOS device or an Android device. Foregoing that in favor of third party software which isn't kept up to date and which doesn't bring to you all of the features of the native IPBoard software is allowing the tail to wag the dog, and just doesn't make any sense to me. I am seeing quite a few other large forums making the same decision to abandon Tapatalk. Third Party software, such as Tapatalk, are losing market share as forum software authors are getting better at making their software better on mobile devices. My apologies to those who prefer Tapatalk. I hope that you will give TGO a shot using your phone's browser instead. If you don't, we will miss you but TGO will still go on. --David
  5. Hey folks... I've been doing a lot of work on TGO tonight to fix some nagging issues that were bothering perhaps me more than anyone else, but were caused by the recent upgrade to the latest version of the IPBoard software. Specifically, the problems were caused by the customization that was done to make the software "look like TGO". That's a pretty important part of TGO, in my opinion. Ultimately the only way that I could make it all come together was to delete the customization entirely and re-do them from scratch. While this was a big deal, it wasn't painful to the point of my own death because I'd documented the changes pretty thoroughly over time and was able to put them back into place. It was tedious and methodical, but still do-able. All of this brings me back around to a question some of you have had about the "Dark" theme for TGO. That's just not coming back. I'm sorry to just be that final about it, but the problems that I just went through are squared if I have to maintain another theme for the forum on top of the one I am already working to maintain each time a new version of the software comes out. My free time each week is very finite and is somewhere around 10 hours, per. That's 10 hours that I have to divide between everything else TGO requires, my family, finishing up a degree as an adult college student (which totally sucks) and other projects. Maintaining the "Dark" theme for TGO does not fit anywhere into that bucket of time. So, my apologies as I know a few of you liked it, but you're going to have to dim the brightness on your monitor for at least the foreseeable future.
  6. We released the Shooters Nation Podcast, Episode 10 and it's ready for you to check out! https://www.shootersnation.com/podcast/shooters-nation-podcast-episode-010/ David and Mark celebrate the TENTH episode of the Shooters Nation Podcast by being interviewed themselves! And, this interview was done as a live-streamed episode on YouTube with a live audience who were asking the questions! Dennis Ritchie, author and blogger with The Art of Standing, emcees this special episode and asks the guys as series of questions about everything from how they met and started the Shooters Nation Podcast, to choosing the right carry ammunition, to how relevant 9mm carbines are. 7. Springfield Armory Announces TRP 10mm with Trijicon RMR Red Dot Sight https://www.springfield-armory.com/products/1911-trp-10mm-rmr/ From their web site... The Springfield Armory TRP 10mm RMR – one with a 5” barrel, and one with a 6” barrel – are now available with a Trijicon Ruggedized Miniature Reflex (RMR) sight specifically milled into the slide of Springfield Armory’s most elite production 1911. Springfield Armory chose Trijicon, the proven leader in rugged red-dot optics, for its ability to stand up to the power of the formidable 10mm round. The sight is crafted from 7075-T6 aluminum to mil-spec standards and has a patented shape that absorbs impacts and diverts stresses away from the lens, increasing durability. The 5” and 6” TRP 10mm RMRs feature forged National Match frames and slides, precision-fit to match-grade stainless steel fully supported barrels. Frames and slides are Black-T finished to withstand heavy use and harsh environments. The front strap and mainspring housing are checkered in Posi-Lock™ for a firm yet comfortable hold. A SA Magwell/Grip System allows for rapid mag changes under stress without adding any more bulk to the contour of the gun. Once the ambidextrous safety lever is flipped, the Springfield Armory Gen 2 Speed Trigger, calibrated to a crisp 4.5- to 5-pound pull, provides an amazingly clean break. Recoil is managed through extra mass in the reciprocating assembly and frame, making the power of the 10mm round easy on the operator. Each TRP 10mm RMR is shipped with two 9-round magazines. Take Springfield Armory’s most elite production platform, the TRP, and add a Trijicon Ruggedized Miniature Reflex optic, and you’ve got a critical-use 1911 like nothing else – the new TRP 10mm RMR. The 2018 NRA Annual Meeting has not disappointed for new product releases, at least.
  8. Sorry, the Tapatalk developers are SLOW to update for the new versions of our forum software. I'm on record numerous times on TGO talking about how much I hate them and the slapshod way their software integrates with ours.
  9. So your theory is that the media is protecting the armed citizen? Really?
  10. Here's a Waffle House shooting that occurred on Thursday, April 19th that none of us heard anything about... http://www.ksla.com/story/38007080/man-shot-shot-inside-waffle-house-arrested-for-armed-robbery NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - New Orleans police have arrested a subject in connection with a Third District armed robbery. Ernest Thomas. 19, is charged with one count of armed robbery and one count of attempted armed robbery that occurred in the 2900 block of Elysian Fields. Thursday night, two men entered the Waffle House restaurant located in the armed with semiautomatic handguns. One man jumped on the counter and demanded money from the cashier. The perpetrator took $8 dollars from a customer. Thomas stood on the side by the counter covering the staff and serving as a lookout, police said. A customer who was armed with his personal firearm drew his weapon as the perpetrator approached, then ran from the scene. Thomas turned toward the armed customer and pointed his weapon at the customer. The customer fired several times and Thomas fled from the business, police said. The armed customer informed the detectives he believed he shot the subject. The witnesses saw the subjects flee in a white Chrysler south on Elysian Fields Ave. Detectives located a blood trail outside the business to the area where the waiting car had been parked. Detectives alerted local hospitals for any recent gunshot victims. A short time later, detectives learned a someone with several gunshot wounds to the back and arm had been dropped off on the emergency ramp at University Medical Center. Officers determined the man who was shot was Thomas. Detectives recovered the suspect’s bloody pants and sneakers which matched the description of the perpetrator. Hospital security footage showed a white Chrysler which matched the description of the perpetrators vehicle pull on to the ramp at a high rate of speed and the suspect exiting the vehicle and walking into the emergency room. The subject had been shot in the lower back, hip, and arm. Detectives checked with NOPD dispatch there had been no reports of gunshots in the city for the time period. The investigation remains open and active. More charges may be filed against Thomas.
  11. Searches, both for new content and for general keyword matching, will be incomplete for another few hours while the forum re-indexes posts.
  12. Tapatalk is disabled until I can confirm that the version we have installed is 100% compatible with this version of the forum software.
  13. The forum software has been upgraded to the latest and greatest from IPB. There are quite a few new things with this release, some of which aren't enabled on TGO yet but will be introduced soon. One thing that I can say definitively will not work with the current version is the "Dark" theme that some of you have been using. I will investigate what it will take to upgrade to that, but I am going to be 100% honest and say that it is not a top priority at the moment. There are quite a few other things in line ahead of that right now. Another thing that will not reliably work for the next few hours is the "New Content" search. The forum's server is updating the index of all of our threads as quickly as it can but there are a ton of them to go through. Your patience is appreciated.
  14. Correct. The way email works in 2018 with most providers, especially the big ones like GMail, Yahoo, Microsoft, etc. is that they send a spam report back to the sender's organization whenever a user flags email as spam. This even works with email programs like Outlook, Postbox, Apple Mail, etc. because the software these days does the report-back automatically behind the scenes. I can show you a list of 40 people that have been banned for this already. All for the exact same reason. Fortunately the VAST majority of them are folks with zero posts to their name, many of whom signed up during the boom after Sandy Hook and never contributed anything to TGO.
  15. Considering that the software bans people automatically, and you aren't banned... the math is kind of easy.
  16. One of the things a member has the choice of when they register for an account on TGO is whether they wish to receive any emails from the community. This includes not only the emails that the software sends out but also the emails that we periodically send out to our members to alert them to various things. For anything that we send as a "newsletter" there is always a link to use to unsubscribe. It's quick and easy. There's also a way to adjust the emails that you receive by changing your notification settings here on the forum. The link to that is here. However, using your email system to report the mailings as spam is absolutely the wrong way to unsubscribe. It is also a quick way to get banned from TGO entirely. The forum software will ban you if you take that approach rather than unsubscribing properly. Here's the deal, folks... if you don't want to receive email, that's fine. I get a lot of email that I unsubscribe to also. BUT... reporting our email as spam when you opted to receive it, causes problems for the other members. One of the most common issues I have to spend time with is when someone says they aren't getting the emails we send that they want to receive. Claiming our email is spam (when it isn't) just hurts everyone and complicates that situation even further. Just something to keep in mind.
  17. When we sat down to record this episode of the Shooters Nation Podcast with Ian Strimbeck of Runenation last week, we had no idea what would unfold at the Waffle House in Antioch during the early hours this morning. 50% of your waking hours are likely spent in places where you cannot legally carry a handgun. How do you defend yourself in Non Permissive Environments like that? Give it a listen. https://www.shootersnation.com/podcast/008-ian-strimbeck-self-defense-in-non-permissive-environments/ *** NOTE! We built in a few pauses so you can stop and resume listening. There was no way to do this show in just an hour.
  18. No one would know who Briley was if his boss hadn't screwed a cop. Now he wants to screw the law abiding gun owner. Figures.
  19. We primarily require people to link to their photos from elsewhere and not expect that TGO will pay to host those photos for them. The only place where we do that is in the Trading Post forums for items that are for sale/trade, and only then for the Benefactor members who have the ability to start new threads. Everywhere else, you are expected to host with something like Photobucket, Imagur, Smugmug, etc.

  21. Steve, these knives are absolutely amazing in every way. This is the pinnacle of what you've been able to do for TGO with Pro-Tech and I can't thank you or them enough. Anyone who opted to sit this one out for any reason other than having to meet other obligations first, should just hate themselves for skipping it. I am completely blown away by the quality of this knife. Wow. Just wow.
  22. That orange banner is just going to have to be ignored for the time being. There may be an issue with the software that the authors need to look into. My question wasn’t about whether it was here or on your end; it was about here or on Shooters Nation.
  23. You know, I had seen some pics of a Gen 5 mag base-plate that had a dingus on the front edge that filled in the notch on the frame. For some reason I thought those were stock. Turns out they aren't.
  24. Yep, that's Mike Sisino. Mike is a really good guy and knows his stuff. Mark has known him far longer than I have, but in the few years now that I've known him I have found him to be exactly what he is on that podcast episode. Very low key, very professional, very knowledgeable, and very hesitant to criticize others and never does it to elevate himself. When he was saying that there are a lot of good trainers out there that you've never heard of, that was the closest you will ever hear him come to promoting himself -- and he did that in a very roundabout way. I can't wait to take a class with him.
