If a creep restrains your hands, you can fight with him and try to wrestle at least one hand free. That's also why I advocate carrying with a live round in the chamber. If you're in a fight for your life, will you really have time AND the faculties available to you to rack the slide?
If a creep grabs a lady's purse and her gun is in that purse... even if it's still attached cross-body like a messenger bag by the strap... who has control of the gun? The rightful owner or the thug who has the purse in his hands, tugging and dragging with it?
That's why I say if the gun is in the purse and the creep has your hands preoccupied... you're screwed. I'd rather the gun be on my person so that as soon as I could get a hand free, I could grab for it rather than having to THEN try to grab for my purse and re-engage that particular aspect of the physical struggle.
