You can turn the audio recording off on practically every dash cam I've seen or used. I turn mine off just because I want maximum capacity on the storage card for video. If I am bugging out of my vehicle, it takes maybe three extra seconds to grab my dash cam and shove it into my pants pocket. Since that camera is evidence of what occurred, it's a worthwhile three seconds.

I am so glad that someone mentioned dash cams. A recent article I read inspired me to not only put my cam back in my car but to upgrade it to a different model that has a camera for the front window and a separate camera for the back window. The article brought to mind that you want factual evidence to support your account of any altercation rather than it be your word against the accounts of conspirators within the mob.

RFTH Scenario Discussion Series: "In Your Vehicle, Surrounded By An Angry Mob" I am going to start a series of scenario discussions using events ripped from the news headlines. These will come as events warrant and justify, and the purpose of them will be to help us think through situations while we have the luxury of time and without the pressure that comes from being in the moment. The intent is to prepare us for things that might actually happen by evulating real-world occurances, dissecting them, and thinking critically about strategies and tactics. As with any structured conversation, there will be some parameters. Guidelines for Participating Discussing the actual event(s) that inspired the topic are fine so long as the discussion is germane to evaluating what went right, what went wrong, and learning from it. Comments should be meant to ask serious questions or provide serious answers. Humor should be used sparingly and appropriately. Comments should pe productive and not solely meant to entertain. We strongly recommend that you remember that the Internet has a long and very indelible memory. Don't make comments here that you would not want your lawyer to have to defend in court before a jury of people carefully selected by the prosecution to maximize the odds of sending you to prison, or worse. Be open to criticism and be able to support your statements with historical evidence or real data. If you are simply offering an opinion, please state such but, again, be open to criticism. The point of this is to make us all smarter and better prepared. Recognize that profiling is a legitimate tool if used appropriately to compare people, the environment, and activities to a baseline of what is normal or conventional for a given place or time. I would refer you to the concepts of the US Marine Corps Combat Hunter program or to the excellent book Left of Bang for more details on this. Profiling deemed to be driven by racism, bigotry, or ignorance will not be allowed, however. In the case of ignorance we willt try to educate, but racism and bigotry will not be allowed. All other TGO rules apply. The Scenario: Recent civil unrest following the death of George Floyd while in the custody of Minneapolis, MN police and even more recently the death of Rayshard Brooks after being shot by police in Atlanta, GA has proven that mobs of angry people can assemble quickly. These uprisings might catch the unware completely off guard. These uprisings have closed down public roadways and included the destruction of private and public property, as well as assaults on law enforcement officers and the general public. On Saturday, June 13, 2020, rioters said to be protesting the Brooks killing set fire to the Wendy's restaurant that owns the parking lot where Brooks was shot by police. In another part of Atlanta a major interstate highway was shut down when protestors marched onto the roadway. [source: https://www.foxcarolina.com/atlanta-protesters-block-interstate-set-fire-to-cars-at-fast-food-restaurant-where-police-killed/article_e45c6e96-3aef-5cdf-9c8a-f0b2f5fabc51.html] While some reconnaisance ahead of time of an area through which you might be traveling or participating in other activities could spare you from being sucked into some protests, others -- such as these -- can spawn rather unexpectedly and without much forewarning. For this discussion, you are asked to consider that you are driving through an area not necessarily prone to violent demonstrations when suddenly a group of people march into the roadway blocking you, the motorists ahead of you, and the motorists behind you. You are effectively "swarmed" by a mass of very angry individuals who appear to be engaged in a protest of some sort. How would you respond? What would your order of options be and how would you work through them to determine the best option given increasingly escalating hostility around you?

Nashville area FFLs that accept incoming from private parties?
TGO David replied to asu174's topic in General Chat
Check with your nearby Music City Pawn Shop. I use Music City Pawn almost exclusively for FFL transfers and am 99% sure I have used them for a private-party transfer before. -

FFS. Democrats don't do this? -

You might be right. I've considered that as a possibility. It's a really hard pill for a lot of people to even contemplate swallowing. -
Easy there, chief. No need to get dramatically butthurt about my comment. If you're right about it not making a difference, a lot of people who've been running dots longer than either one of us need to be told that they're wrong. I'm glad you're happy with the setup. I'm sure it suffices for pleasure or competition shooting. I wouldn't run it for combatives, but that's just me and... like... practically everyone else I know that sets up their guns for duty/serious use.

I'd challenge you to re-think the statement to be "They are upset because an elected politician is telling them what to do" and strike the party line out of it. People, in general, are starting to become very tired of elected representatives acting like ordained directors or dictators. It's happening with elected representatives across party lines, but is perhaps more prevalent in the Democrat side of the problem. -

I'm going to throw out a very unpopular opinion: 2A Supporters are either a silent majority or a vocal minority, and if it's the former of the two... the silent majority is screwing the rest of us. The media panders hard left but that's because the hard left is a hell of a vocal group. If the 2A supporters, regardless of political affiliation, were vocal enough and large enough of a group, the media would likely pander that direction. The media needs money and their money comes from advertising ... when it isn't coming from George Soros. They'll follow whichever group generates the most revenue for them. If we're actually just a vocal minority, it's time for us to start adopting minority tactics. One of the most effective minority tactics is to be an inconvenient pain in the establishment's ass until it can't ignore them anymore. -
To each their own, but damn. Most folks want their RDS set as low in the slide as possible.

Zeroing red dots. Is it right if it’s only right for YOU?
TGO David replied to One1's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
This video is the way to zero a dot. -
Pro Tip: Don't fall for the lies of no-line / progressie bifocal lenses. They are much harder to use with a red dot sight and maintain a crisp clear dot. Use traditional bifocals with distinct single-vision areas.

Consider too that the machette is not exactly a "stabbing" kind of weapon. These people got slashed and hacked.

Devil's Advocate Post: I hear that these folks aren't helping further or preserve the 2A. Who is and what are they doing that is expanding the appeal of the 2A? -
Zeroing red dots. Is it right if it’s only right for YOU?
TGO David replied to One1's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
I just started watching your video, so I will make an additional point: Zero your gun for the ammo you will use the most often for whichever purpose you bought the gun. Different ammo from different manufacturers will generally print differently on target. Dial it in for your ideal ammo, then understand how to adjust your hold for the other ammo you tend to use. Example: I carry Federal HST 124gr 9mm. I zero my RDS for that at 15yds. I know how to adjust my hold (POA) for the desired point of impact (POI) at distances closer and further. I also know how to adjust my hold if I am shooting 115gr Fiocchi FMJ at the range, or 115gr Magtech, or 115gr Winchester, etc. I don't adjust my dot for those. I adjust my hold. I leave my dot zeroed for my carry ammo. I also accept that there may be variances in each round of my preferred carry ammo due to manufacturing tolerances. At the distances I expect accuracy of myself and the gun, those variances generally don't amount to much on target. -
Zeroing red dots. Is it right if it’s only right for YOU?
TGO David replied to One1's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
RDS should be parallax free. There should be no difference between shooters except for the shooters themselves. With that in mind, if you are zeroing your RDS to compensate for jerking the trigger - you are really just enabling bad form. It may work for you at the distance you're zeroing it at, but you will again be inaccurate as that distance changes. With a handgun the difference won't be signfiicant due to the overall shorter distances at which we generally shoot them, but there will be a difference. Also, what group size are you aspiring for? If you are grouping your shots within a 5-inch circle of each other, at a reasonably quick pace, at a reasonable distance for self-defense purposes... maybe just accept that it is what it is. If you are trying to thread the eye of the needle at 15-25 yards and cloverleaf your shots, then you need to focus on your grip and your trigger press then worry about dialing in the dot. -

My wife, an RN with extensive clinical experience, started everyone in the family on Vitamin D supplements two months ago. I just did as I was told and took the pill each morning. I'm glad she was right, but I'll never admit that to her.

That one never gets old no matter how many times my friends tag me in it.

How to legally transport guns to a shooting range?
TGO David replied to CaliGirl's topic in Handgun Carry and Self Defense
^^^ This. It's sad that California has become what it is now. It used to be a state that embodied the American dream, freedom, rebelliousness. Welcome to Free America! -
Nashville is a large area. What part are you in?
-
Almost two years ago, my journey into the Dot Life started with this M&P M2.0 Compact that I had Primary Machine mill for an RMR. Since then I’ve moved wholly to handguns with red dot optics and parted with almost every one I owned that wasn’t set up for a dot sight. This gun has sat at the back of a bottom shelf in my safe for the last year, after I poached its RMR for a different gun. Today I unburied it, added an RMR, and installed a new front sight of the appropriate height from 10-8 Performane to fix a minor problem I had with the irons not really printing POA/POI. Sometimes it’s fun to return to your roots and spend some time running a gun that started something new for you. I’m looking forward to getting back to the range soon with this one.

Why? Trigger "feel" is such a subjective, personal, opinionated thing that there's no way I'd let someone else's comments about a trigger deter me from considering a gun. Go try one yourself. You might think it's the best trigger ever. This sounds like a poorly designed holster. Most good holsters have a relief around the mag release to prevent what you described, and I've seen many bad holsters cause exactly the problem you had. If it really was the fault of the gun, somehow, the part they should have had you replace was the spring-rod in the grip that provides the resistance against the magazine release button. The button itself wouldn't have needed to be replaced unless the portion that sticks into the magazine tube to secure it was broken off or damaged in some way.
