There's not much to know about the Nashville chapter at this point. If you live close to Memphis, Knoxville or Chattanooga you stand a better chance of getting something out of your local chapter.

I'm not going to schedule it around a gun show. We've tried to organize these things before and have found that we'll never find a day and time that works for everyone and doesn't conflict with something else for at least one person. If folks want to eat with us and then head over to Williamson Co. for the gun show rather than go shooting, that is certainly another option for them.

I think we can all agree that she #1 needs to be equipped to protect herself and #2 should seek professionally lead instruction on what to use, how to use it, when to use it and get the permit to carry it. Whatever "it" is has become fairly academic at this point right? Unless it's a 1911, and then she'll have God on her side too.

Saturday December 8th (2007) at 11:30am Famous Dave's BBQ in Smynra, TN Click here for map and driving directions We will meet for lunch at Famous Dave's in Smyrna. After lunch we will head to the On Target indoor shooting range in Murfreesboro,TN (click for map) to get in some range time. I would expect that we will arrive at On Target somewhere around 2:00pm and be there for a couple of hours. I would remind everyone that Famous Dave's does serve alcohol for on-premises consumption. When you arrive at Famous Dave's, the party will be seated under the name "T G O" ... so you can ask the hostess to be seated with us, or you can just look for me sporting the green TGO ball cap. See you there!

So yeah, um... this is going well.

I mean no disrespect, but I would almost think that being in a wheel chair might give you more concealment options that the rest of us could not get away with w/o odd looks. A pack of some sort, for example. And at the risk of seeming even more disrespectful, which I assure you is not my intent, it is often the natural inclination of people to look away from someone in a chair ("Honey, stop staring!" ... etc.) rather than risk appearing to be rude, so you probably have an even better chance of flying beneath the radar of waitresses, nosy dinner neighbors, etc.

In the meantime... deep, deep concealment if you dare.

Come on people. Let's avoid following "party lines" and prescribing one gun over another just because we each favor something in particular. That's utterly useless advice for someone who is completely new to guns. The reason so many different guns exist is because not everyone has the same preference, same needs or same budget. What feels good in one person's hand is not always going to feel good to the next person. And what one person can shoot accurately is not necessarily what the next person will!!! My recommendation, sent privately to the original poster, is pretty much as follows... #1.) Ignore the suggestions to get a shotgun. You're not going to walk your dog with one or drop one in your coat pocket. #2.) Find a reputable, NRA certified firearms trainer. I recommended Austin Crow (Phantom6) as I think he is reasonably close to her. Let that firearms trainer teach you the ins and outs out owning a firearm for self defense. Let that firearms trainer help you navigate the hundreds of handgun options out there. A good trainer can probably arrange to have several handguns available on Range Day so that you can shoot a few and get an idea of what you like and what you don't. I swear, sometimes I think the Glock people really DO think that's the only handgun made as I've counted several posts in this thread that consisted entirely of "Buy a Glock!"

First of all, welcome to TGO. Please enjoy your stays here. Second, are you specifically shopping for an automatic handgun or are you also open to the prospect of a revolver? Lots of good advice has already been given in this thread. The only thing I want to echo is what Frank (ETS_Inc) said when he mentioned trying as many handguns as you can before making what is essentially a very personal decision. Many folks will give a knee-jerk reaction and tell you "Buy a Glock!" or "Buy a Kimber!" but they are merely telling you what they prefer; not what you're going to prefer. It's been my own personal experience that female shooters do very well with mid-sized compact automatic 9mm and 45acp handguns because of the softer recoil offered by them. The 45acp has a fairly tame recoil, believe it or not. Many female shooters don't like the .40SW handguns because of the "snap" that the cartridge has. Especially in small frame automatics. Definitely try before you buy! Modern defensive handgun ammunition almost ensures that as long as you're shooting a .38 Special or 9mm or larger, and that you can put your shots on target when the time comes to do so, that it really doesn't matter what caliber you're carrying. So try as many as you can and find the one that you like and the one that you're going to feel comfortable carrying. If it's not comfortable to you, it will end up left at home more often than not... and a gun left at home is useless for your self protection. Good luck!

*sigh* Perry from the TFA Nashville chapter called me again a moment ago and said that while Buford and staff will be at the APPS offices this evening around the time of the scheduled meeting, that the meeting has in fact been called off. Communication continues to be the stumbling block for TFA Nashville. :-\ I recommended to Perry that he give strong consideration to stopping by the Picadilly Cafeteria this evening between 6:00 - 6:30 and meet you folks, eat with you, and talk about the current state of things. I told him that he could expect some very candid remarks about the way TFA Nashville seems to be going lately. If he does show up, please welcome him. He seems to be struggling with the same frustrations that the rest of us are and would likely welcome any feedback that you can give. Eddie (Molonlabe) ... you and Danny (Dunndw) know what Perry looks like. Could you guys be on the lookout for him this evening? He might not be able to spot you guys as easily as you will him. Again, I'm sorry I won't be able to make it. I've got some family stuff going on this evening that will keep me from being there this time.

trading handguns without a transfer
TGO David replied to Mike.357's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
I agree 100% but my personal stance is that if someone refuses to fill out the transfer form, then I'm going to refuse to sell the firearm to them. I also take time to explain to the buyer that it benefits them as well since I give them an exact copy of the form that they could use to show the police where they purchased the firearm if a question ever arose. I'm not trying to be a dick about it. I just insist on mutual CYA when I do a private sale of a firearm. It strikes me as being the socially responsible thing to do. -

And your reply was an attempt to obfuscate the issue at hand by making a HUGE leap into 4th Amendment Rights. Thus it was very much so a strawman argument. Thank you, come again. -

Typical straw-man argument from you, Rabbi. I'm not going to get sucked into it like others have. I could issue a similar challenge to you and insist that I want to buy one of the firearms in your store from you, privately, over the hood of a car somewhere per the outline you provided in your previous post. I'm sure you would be just as willing to do that as I would be willing to allow someone to violate my 4th Amendment rights. -

I don't think that I would ever spray something like that on my vehicles. But I'm a huge stickler when it comes to detailing my cars too. -

trading handguns without a transfer
TGO David replied to Mike.357's topic in 2A Legislation and Politics
No offense, but if you met me to buy a handgun and subsequently told me to "get lost" when I presented you with that form, I'd tell you to piss up a burning rope for wasting my time. Then I'd come back here and make a giant post about how you refused to sign something that anyone without a shady background should have had no problem signing. -

Though no FFL involvement is necessary, I would strongly encourage all of you to use a form like the one here to document the transaction for your own protection. Should that firearm later be involved in a crime and tracked back to you by the serial number, you will be able to supply the police with the contact information (or at least identity) of the buyer. It's just a good way to cover your butt.
