Truthfully, what protects us (and them) in cases like this is just simple ol' planning ahead and having contingencies lined up. I appreciate the kind word and confidence, though. With our backups, I can re-home TGO elsewhere pretty quick if needed. The delay is in getting DNS servers to update, and there are some tricks that can make that give us a little extra control over that. Without backups, we'd be sunk. They would have been too.

Wow. The description of what happened to their server falls into what I think most folks would just call an "Act of God". Glad they got it running again!

We're not immune to problems but we do a LOT of backups, all "off-site", several times a day.

No worries, man. I appreciate you supporting the site. -
I'm still waiting on the full-size variant of these to come available in another week, but I wanted to pick up one of these too since it seems like a more "carry friendly" EDC sort of knife. There are a few steels that I am a big fan of and CruWear is one of them. It's a bit more difficult to sharpen than CPM S30V, for example, or the D2 that the previous Adamas was produced in... but you can't beat it for retaining an edge with use. When I saw that the new Adamas and MINI Adamas were going to be released in CruWear, I knew my wallet was going to get a bit lighter. The smooth G10 scales are perfect for pocket carry, the Axis lock is one of the strongest ambidextrous lock types out there, and the pivot runs on legit brass washers. Brass washers are my favorite for a knife that might get dusty or dirty (you know... USED like a knife) since they tend to keep grit and grime out of the pivot better than the other alternatives. I am very pleased with this one. If you get a chance, pick one up for yourself.

Overlapping Benefactor Membership Periods
TGO David replied to btq96r's topic in Feedback and Support
The old one was set to expire on 3/15 of any given year. I just edited the new one to expire on 3/30 of any given year. That pushes it out past the six days and keeps the math easy. -
My generation spent stupid amounts of money to buy sequined gloves to look like this weirdo. I can't throw rocks at my kids because of it. To be clear, I am physically incapable of throwing rocks with this damn glove on. They slip out of my hand. I want to throw rocks.

Sounds frustrating. We've tried to keep it simple here and it's working so far.

Overlapping Benefactor Membership Periods

You should be good to go now. I canceled the old one so that renewing it won't be an option and then set the expiration on the new one to a year from today's date. Let me know if that works for you? -

Shouldn’t be a problem. I can work on it for you this morning. -
I just want to acknowledge the clever title for this thread.

I am watching the J&J vaccine with interest. If I am going to do one, it will probably be that one. I am not an anti-vaxxer, lest anyone be left with that idea. I do the flu shot practically every year and have not sprouted a second head because of it yet. I just want these COVID-19 vaccines to get some miles under their belt before I embrace them, especially the radically new ones. Until then, I've had the real deal and that should suffice for a while. I also plan to not embrace any more social distancing unless some crazy new extraordinarily virulent and lethal version of COVID-19 or other nasty plague manifests. There is a justifiable concern among the scientific community that social isolation in 2020 may have hurt us more than helped us, by diminishing our herd immunity to other communicable diseases. I'm ready to get back out there and lick some damn doorknobs and hug randos at church, folks.

General Class here as well. I'd like to study for Extra at some point. I can help where time permits.

https://apnews.com/article/germany-suspends-astrazeneca-vaccine-blood-clotting-0ab2c4fe13370c96c873e896387eb92f "BERLIN (AP) — March 15th, 2021: A cascading number of European countries — including Germany, France, Italy and Spain — suspended use of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine Monday over reports of dangerous blood clots in some recipients, though the company and international regulators say there is no evidence the shot is to blame." My take-away from this: The AstraZeneca vaccine is not approved for use in the US yet. Might never be. There have been deaths recorded with suspicious proximity to other COVID-19 vaccines being administered here in the US. I've not yet seen whether blood clotting might have been a factor in the US deaths. No one should feel pressured to take or not take the vaccine. It's a personal decision. Consider all of the information available, include factors which affect your risk level into your calculus, and go from there. If you prefer to make decisions in a vacuum or if your opinion is easily buffeted for or against this or any other subject, the Internet is not a good place for you to spend your time.

Maybe let the moderators do the moderating?

I don't disagree with the inherent irony of that situation, but you're basically complaining about a person's freedom to choose.
-
I work in healthcare. I think maybe you should do further reading on the mRNA vaccines and how they work. They aren't exposing your body to pieces of the virus and causing it to trigger a natural immunity. They are modifying the way your body's own immune system operates and programming it to create something it ordinarily wouldn't. The downstream effects of this are unknown. You have zero evidence to the contrary because no one does.
-
There are certainly people, like yourself, for whom the vaccine makes a lot more sense. And I'll add... that if a person is out of the "child siring" or "child bearing" games, then there is probably even less risk. Here's an aspect of this to think about, though: You may feel that you have nothing to lose but there are people who will feel a loss if you succumb to any of those conditions. At the very least, we here on TGO would miss your contributions to the ongoing dialogue and the experiences that you can share with us. I don't want anyone rushing off into oblivion. Please don't misread my words or intent.

Just an update of sorts, I am still really enjoying this knife. If I had to change one thing though I would probably look for a way to replace the natural canvas Micarta scale with a G10 scale and thin steel liner. The Micarta scale by itself seems reasonably strong but (a.) the "patina" that develops on the unsealed scale can get rather gross looking and (b.) the added support of a thin steel liner would add a small but welcomed bit of durability. I did take it completely apart yesterday and thoroughly cleaned the action with some alcohol prep pads (they're great for this sort of thing and really cheap on Amazon) and re-lubed the pivot with some Weapon Shield brand lubricant. It's the same stuff I prefer to use on certain guns with tight tolerances and the viscosity is thin enough that it doesn't retard deployment of the blade. Lucas Gun Oil might work as well but it seems to have a thicker viscosity, so I tend to use it on things with looser tolerances. I should have taken the knife apart, cleaned and lubed it like this straight after initially receiving it. The improvement is significant.

Agreed. If people would be as determined to study for and pass the extremely simple Technician class exam as they are to make CB and GMRS work over long distances, they'd end up with a far better solution. Maybe we could just get some TGO study groups going.

I wish nothing but the best for you. My concern is that no one can truly predict what the side effects may be 2, 10, 20 years from now so "I'll let you know what happens" could mean waiting a long time to find out that it causes second or third generation birth defects or some other terrible issue. If COVID-19 were as contagious and fatal as, say, the Ebola Virus, I think taking the calculated risk of rushing everyone to get vaccinated would make sense. As is, statistics still show that this virus is perhaps slightly more contagious than the strains of influenza we've been dealing with for generations of people and less fatal overall than influenza. The statistics also show that co-morbidities play a significant role in determining who has a harder time with it or dies from it, but you don't hear the government screaming those things from the rooftops. It's all about the shot, and the shot only addresses COVID-19. Purportedly. It doesn't address obesity, diabetes, sedentary lifestyles, smoking addictions, etc. Here's the thing: None of us are making it out of here alive, but those other things are known killers too. And I am once again dragging my lazy, office-dwelling, all-too-sedentary ass up at 0500 HRS every day to put in time on the rowing machine because I might like tacos and Cheetos, but the Reaper is still going to have to at least power-walk to catch me. *I'm not a doctor but common sense is common sense*
