Found this elsewhere and thought I would cross-post it here for the sake of illustrating why it is imperative that we always observe the traditional laws of gun safety when handling our firearms. As someone on the source forum commented, we're not playing golf here. The firearms that we enjoy for recreation and for self defense are deadly weapons and as such must be handled with absolute care at all times. I will go ahead and point out one thing... the person guilty of the ND was an off-duty police officer. I do not want this thread to turn into LEO bashing! As some of our own resident Officers have stated before, not all cops are avid shooters. Some departments only make their officers qualify once a year and that qualification is the only time that some officers ever fire their guns. We are fortunate in my town that the PD makes their officers qualify more frequently than that. Further, our chief is a very pro-2nd Amendment individual and supports civilian carry. Anway, here's the story. Blue text is not mine: Earlier this week I got word of an incident at a nearby local range involving a long time friend who is a great promoter of the gun arts here locally. Today I made a quick trip out to his range, put in an hour of shooting time and heard the story first hand. Because of the intensity of what happened and the lessons to once again be learned and/or reinforced I pass this along. Straight up.........classic mistakes in gun handling almost got a man shot. Recently, a nine year veteran of local LE came into that range (out of uniform) for a little personal shooting practice. Right off he made a mistake by ignorning the sign posted at front door, but that might have been because he was armed and carrying off duty. Anway, for whatever reason he came in with a loaded uncased weapon. At that point things went straight to hell real fast. According to the owner and at least one on sight witness he apparently unholstered his duty weapon (GLOCK) and went to clear it. He racked out a chambered round, let the slide drop back home and THEN dropped out the mag. He proceeded to point the gun at the floor and pull the trigger. Sure enough the mistakenly chambered round went boom. The round bounced off of the concrete tiled floor, went into the "range rules" sign shattering the glass at the top (how ironic that is) and into wall behind it. The bullet travelled upward hitting something within the wall and then came back out angled downward and right into the corner of the desk where the owner was sitting in the process of making a phone call. The owner (an experienced combat veteran and one heck of a SD/HD promoter and trainer) honesty thought he had been fired upon as glass was raining onto him (he thought a round had come through the display case) and a bullet had just hit the desk right next to where he was sitting. He literally spun around coming up out of his chair while drawing his C&L laser equipped Kimber (which he always carries at the range) and according to both he and the witness present, dropped the safety, had the laser on the person's face and was preparing to fire when he realized that the man was not a real threat and what had actually happened. At that point he proceeded to lower his weapon and invite the person (in not very nice terms) to get out and never ever come back there. The owner put up the Springer sign to cover up the exit hole after the incident although he plans to leave the Range Rules sign as is. Picture of his desk. The bullet landed just to the left of the left can and the owner was sitting just to the left of that. Both the owner (long time friend) and myself were glad he did not follow through with that last aspect of pulling the trigger on his Kimber. Once again...........be safe folks as things can get out of sequence real fast if one is not thinking all the time.

Please pay special attention to the start and end times. We will start at 12:00 noon to accommodate those who will be attending church that morning since it is on a Sunday this time. The official TGO portion of the day will end at 3:00pm. You are more than welcome to stay and shoot beyond that time but you will be on your own recognizance from that point forward. This is to say that we won't be there to interface between you and the land owner should a problem arise. Finally, we are doing this on Sunday this time because it allows people who usually have other obligations on Saturdays to attend. Next month we will have it on Saturday again, and may flip-flop like this throughout the summer. Thanks.

You must supply your own eye and ear protection, paper targets and target hanging materials. Rifle lanes require a heavy duty stapler and cardboard to hang targets to the backstops. The handgun pit requires cardboard, stapler and/or heavy tape to hang targets from the backstop. Recommend that you bring insect repellent and bottled water or soft drinks. Alcohol is not allowed! Weather dependent, also bring sunscreen and/or shoes that you don't mind getting muddy and dirty. This is an OUTDOOR range. Approximate GPS Coordinates for those with GPS devices: Latitude 35.7606 N ; Longitude -86.8571 W *** There will not be an organized lunch connected to this month's get together *** Important Update Regarding Owl Hollow: As many of you know, the Owl Hollow Gun Club no longer has the lease for the shooting range. The range is now being run by the landowner. The landowner is fine with us continuing to meet there during the summer provided that we police ourselves and ensure that everyone is being safe and responsible. Some changes that should be mentioned are: There is now only the 25yd pistol pit. The short pistol pit has been closed down as of this writing. Only handgun calibers may be shot in the pistol pit. Centerfire rifle calibers may not. We did shoot some defensive shotgun (12ga) in the pistol pit yesterday and the owner did not appear to have a problem with that. Full auto weapons are not allowed to be fired in full auto. If you have a full auto, you can bring it and shoot it but you have to stay in single fire mode. Rapid firing is permissible as long as it is kept in 3-round, controlled strings. Bump firing is forbidden. Anyone doing anything unsafe will be asked to leave. Period. That's pretty much it. We will review these rules again on the day of the event just to make sure that there are no gray areas. It's imperative that we respect the wishes of the landowner if we want to be allowed to meet there again. Look forward to seeing you guys there!

First, please quote and reply correctly. When you embed your comments as you did, it makes it very difficult to reply with any sense of continuity. Second, while some of your remarks may look cute at first glance, it just makes it look even more like you didn't think out your first response well enough to be able to substantiate it in follow-up responses. Point in case, StrickJ pointed out exactly why my reply refuted most of what you said initially. Had you qualified your remarks with a statement like, "I wouldn't render aid to a badguy because I might do something that would cause further medical trauma..." then it may have made sense. May have. Even still, the idea that you wouldn't render aid to a GSW victim because infection might set in is a bit absurd. Infection will likely set in regardless if the wound is left unattended. Bits of clothing, hair, skin will be forced into the wound channel, not to mention the bullet and bullet fragments. None of those will be sterile. It seems as though you just want to argue. I pointed out that your statements were essentially false but did it because I would not want someone else to read what you wrote and be fearful of assisting a friendly GSW victim. Most of us are savvy enough to ignore 90% of what we read on the Internet. Some of us aren't, which is why I try to keep misinformation at a low on TGO. There are plenty of forums elsewhere where you can argue with people for the sake of arguing. If you want to do it here, at least bring the facts.

Both parties have been issued 30 day temporary bans to cool down. Apparently neither is fully capable of engaging in a heated debate with another party without resorting to threats of violence against the other. There are plenty of forums on the Internet where you can behave badly. I can provide a link to one where it's actually considered to be a kosher form of discourse.

You know who benefits from that? It's not the guy who gets shot there in the first place causes that sort of lawsuit. So when do we stop caring with the anti-gun press and other Liberal hand-wringers think, and start fighting fire with fire? It seems to me that some folks here are paralyzed with the fear that if provoked, the anti-2nd Amendment crowd will start saying anti-2nd Amendment things. Well that is as certain to happen as the sun is certain to rise tomorrow morning regardless of whether we sit around doing nothing or if we start fighting them with their own tactics.

Um... if it's someone you just shot in self defense I'd leave them alone. But not for any of the reasons you just listed. The resident nurse in my household just read that and rolled her eyes. 1. Infection doesn't set in immediately 2. There are medications for infection to address that problem later 3. The more pressing issue in a GSW is bleeding out. Pressure mitigates that. So if my buddy gets shot, I'm going to render aid. I'm not going to stand there with my thumb up my butt and tell him "Sorry dude... you know... infections and stuff."

Yep... for whatever reason there are people out there who will order a holster and then stiff the guy when it comes time to pay. And he refuses to take payment until he's actually building your holster for you! No good deed goes unpunished.

Hands down my current favorite holster and a shot of my elusive Wilson Combat Pro Bobtail. I would have a VM2 holster for every handgun that I own if it weren't for the 12-18 week wait that it takes to get them from Milt. You can sometimes luck into a brand new one on eBay or elsewhere, but expect to pay a nearly 100% convenience fee for it. Milt Sparks Holsters

This is the only OWB holster that I own that I care for at all. It pulls my M&P in tight against my body and is almost as discrete as any of my inside the waistband holsters. I have since ordered two more: one for my Glock 19 and one for my Kimber Warrior. Highly recommended. The Malabar Front

I just went with straight black cowhide since it tends to stay hidden beneath a shirt anyway. One of these days I'll get a pretty OWB holster for one of the guns.

I hunted down that thread and saw it. Beautiful holster! Makes me even more anxious for mine to arrive. I need to take a pic of some of my holsters and contribute to that thread. Hopefully today.

I'll give you a heavy rock out of my yard when you get back. It has better ergonomics than that SIG and probably better reliability. It'll save you $500 too.
