Scared myself........Now I use what I have.
TGO David replied to personDJ's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
Kudos to you for acknowledging a deficiency in your overall preparedness and then making plans to remedy them. Especially the part about doing some walk-throughs to lay some plans for the day you hope never comes. Most people don't bother! They buy a gun, slap a light on it and stuff it in a drawer and never think about "what if". -
Reminds me of this...

Costa Catalyst Extended Mag Release for M&P Handguns
TGO David replied to TGO David's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
Sure does. Works just like the Vickers in that respect. -
Sounds like a Nighthawk.

Costa Catalyst Extended Mag Release for M&P Handguns

I've tried that in the past but didn't really care much for it. -
Costa Catalyst Extended Mag Release for M&P Handguns

Understood. Yes - it has a slightly rough texture however I have a baby-carrot thumb so I doubt I will be hitting it much except to drop mags. -
Costa Catalyst Extended Mag Release for M&P Handguns

I run compact mag baseplates on my mags for carry. Less crap to snag on clothing, less crap to accidentally hook with your fingers if you carry more than one spare mag. -

It's a mag release lever. It won't change anything about the way it shoots, and it shoots like a tack driver. -
Costa Catalyst Extended Mag Release for M&P Handguns
TGO David replied to TGO David's topic in Firearms Gear and Accessories
If you are serious about carrying your M&P for self defense and practice combat reloads, and if you have to break your primary grip to activate the mag release with your thumb, then I see this as a no-brainer. Spend the $30 and enjoy the benefits. You're simply investing in making better the item you carry to protect your life. -
Received my Costa Ludus / 21st Century Gunfighter "Catalyst" extended mag release for the Smith and Wesson M&P handguns today... Promptly installed it in my M&P 9mm and can say that despite being a just small light piece of plastic, it's almost worth the $30 it cost shipped to my door. The price is indeed a damn bit absurd but it's also the only extended mag release for the M&P and there are also only two vendors selling it on the Internet right now from what I've seen, so they can pretty much charge whatever they want for it and if you want one, you'll pay it. So what's it look like installed? I have read questions on other forums asking if it interferes with the use of Raven Concealment Phantom holsters or Comp-Tac MTAC holsters. I carry with both and the holster's trigger guard stops short of the mag release area so, no - it does not interfere and use of those holsters does not cause the mag to eject by accident. I also tried it with my TT Gunleather and my Occidental Leather Company holsters and it worked just fine with them for the same reason. Overall I am very pleased. The extended release allows me to drop the mag without breaking my primary hold on the firearm. I have short little Shrek fingers anyway, so this is a huge improvement for me. It's very similar to the Vickers Tactical extended release for the Glock series and I love that on my Glock 19, so... this is a winner. I'd like to buy about three more of these for our other M&Ps but that'd be nearly $100 in plastic and I'm not about to do it. I may pick up one a month for the next few months, but the price seriously is out of line and out of reach of most people I'm afraid. Which is a shame because it is truly a damn good upgrade.

Westboro Baptist Church in Knoxville 10-18-12

They should focus their energy on practicing propper trigger pulling technique with shotguns in their own mouths. A "respectful proximity" to the ceremony would be them, burning in hell. -

I'm surprised this thread still has legs like this on a gun forum. Surely there are cycling forums out there. Are they just all tired of talking about it? -
I'll be visiting you guys soon for our second XD-S.

Sipping some Four Roses Single Barrel right now actually. I've been keeping a fifth of it around for about two years or so now. Good stuff.

how far back does the search function work?
TGO David replied to S&WForty's topic in Feedback and Support
Technically it should be back to the start of things but I know that's not true based on some of my own searches. One day soon I'll need to take the site down for a day to do some maintenance, one item of which will definitely be re-indexing the search database. -
Disagree with Dave that the M&P 45 is that much fatter than a 1911 grip that it makes it unsuitable as a "carry gun". The M&P 45 grip is only a hair thicker than the M&P 9mm or .40SW variants and the slide is likewise only a hair thicker. The difference is so negligible that the vast majority of holsters made for the 9/40 fit the 45 perfectly. I know you're talking about the 45C but I'd skip that and go straight for the shorter (4-inch) full size instead. The M&P 45 4-inch version is the perfect carry .45ACP in my opinion. Here is a very good photographic comparison between the M&P 45 4-inch and a 1911 Commander size. These are not my photos but they save me the trouble of having to break out the camera and do the same thing.

I dunno... I wear pants that fit correctly, a good sturdy gun belt all the time, and am just used to it I guess.

Thanks, I shot him an email as well.

Repairing scratches on Kimber Stainless model

I couldn't tell you. It's been at least 5 years since I did it and I have no idea what it cost and don't have my email from back then. -
Repairing scratches on Kimber Stainless model
TGO David replied to S&WForty's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
I had a Kimber once in the past that had the KimPro stainless satin finish. The frame itself may indeed be stainless steel but that is most certainly a top-coat. Rub it down with some acetone and you'll likely see the cloth come away silver. Actually don't do that... I'm just making a point. Seriously, you will not be disappointed with Robar's NP3 finish. It may take them a few weeks to get your stuff back to you but it will be worth it in spades. -
I replied to the email last week. Check your spam filter.

Repairing scratches on Kimber Stainless model
TGO David replied to S&WForty's topic in Gunsmithing & Troubleshooting
Before you send it back to Kimber, I'd consider just having the firearm coated with Robar's NP3 or NP3 Plus [link] and ask them about having their smiths fill in the scratches before they do the coating process. I had an XD-9mm that I had treated with NP3 and that was one bad-ass finish. You won't find a paint-on finish anywhere that does with NP3 does, or holds up like NP3 holds up, IMO. -
Yeah I really dig that. Do you have his contact info? I didn't see it readily available on the Smith & Wesson forum and really don't want to sign up for yet another forum if I don't have to. I already get about 300 emails on my birthday when all of the forums I'm a member of bombard me.

I've got a Comp-Tac MTAC coming for it so that my wife can try it as an IWB carry. I'm searching for a holster similar to the RCS Phantom to order for them as well but so far RCS doesn't make one and I've not really covered too many other bases yet.
