  1. I've stayed out of this thread because I wasn't really sure how I wanted to approach it nor what I really wanted to share for opsec concerns.  I built my own system using commercial-grade PoE (power over ethernet) IP cameras, additional IR illumination for better picture quality at night, a commercial-grade PoE ethernet switch and Luxriot brand software running on a dedicated machine that dumps video to a network attached storage (NAS) device as well as sending motion-triggered frames with pre-and-post event frames to Amazon cloud storage.   If someone were to break into my house, obtain my network video recorder and trash it, it's still too late for them as every bit of it it sent to the cloud instantly where they cannot reach it and destroy it.  The credentials used by the software to write to Amazon cannot delete or modify files, so once they're there... they're there until *I* sign in and delete them.   I'm not going to post brands of cameras or switchgear publicly for the sake of opsec, but anyone who is REALLY interested in knowing what equipment I would recommend can ping me privately and I may answer.  My setup ran me about $2,000 by the time all was said and done but I have 360 degree coverage of the property and very high-res cameras covering front and rear exits and driveway.   Overkill?  Maybe to some, but it's just part of the overall home security system to me.  Plus I enjoyed building it and love to play with tech.   TheGrayMan over at Arfcom is hands down the most knowledgeable "pro amateur" that I have encountered yet and his threads were invaluable to me as I pieced together my own system.  The stuff you buy from SAMs, Costco and others are better than nothing but there's lightyears of difference between what you get from them and what you get from pro-grade equipment.   Check this thread out: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_10_17/624112_CCTV_cameras_101_____Table_of_Contents_in_OP____Updated_27_Jun.html
  2. Sorry but I've gotta say this.  It's CORD.  A chord is a group of musical notes.
  3. I went to the store the day before yesterday and couldn't find any new small-batch stuff to try so I picked up a bottle of Maker's Mark Cask Strength.  Pretty good, really.  I could see buying it again.
  4. Glock worked out the problems with the Gen4 a long while ago.  The current production models are good to go and have been for at least a year or two now.   In order of preference I'd go for Gen4 and then Gen3.  I'd skip Gen2.  I have several Gen3 and two Gen4 now.
  5. Yep... it is time.  :)
  6. I want to wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving! For some of you that will mean being surrounded by friends and family. For others it may mean being surrounded by your brothers and sisters in the military, police, or civilian emergency services. And yet for others it may simply mean some time alone. If alone-time is what it means, I pray that it is because that's the way you want it. If not, I would encourage you to seek out company at the many churches and civic organizations who will be opening their doors to the public tomorrow for a warm meal and some time of fellowship. Do not spend it alone because you think no one cares. Reach out to me here if you have no one else to talk to and I'll be glad to give you a call or in the Nashville area I'd be glad to try to meet you for a cup of coffee somewhere. For those of you working this holiday to keep the rest of us safe and sound, God bless you! For everyone else, please be safe if your weekend includes travels or (God help you) venturing out into the retail jungle. Keep your eyes peeled, your sidearm close and your powder dry. No matter what it looks like these days, we still have much to be thankful for as a country.
  7. I mistook your question.  It helps to clarify which convention center you're talking about.   In this case I can only assume it's in Knoxville?
  8. It's hard to beat the SIG P220 as a companion to your Glock 21.  It's what John Moses Browning might have come up with 80 years later after he built the 1911 if he had lived so long.
  9. Some info on what 41P is for those who might be curious:   http://www.nfafa.org/atf41p.cfm   "Most of the 41P options currently under consideration would RE-insert local CLEOs into the NFA approval process. Currently, there are CLEOs throughout the country who will not even consider certifying such forms; however, gun owners living in these jurisdictions have the option of creating trusts, LLCs, or other legal entities, in order to avoid having their forms disapproved by a CLEO who is either personally or politically opposed to the ownership of NFA items. If 41P is implemented, that option for bypassing the CLEO sign-off requirement will disappear.   Under 41P, many U.S. citizens who are currently able to purchase NFA items will have that right denied by biased, often politically motivated CLEOs. Even in jurisdictions where CLEOs do not automatically deny all NFA applications, the requirement that all NFA applications go through a CLEO will result in long delays much longer than the months of delays that are already the norm in the process of acquiring an NFA tax stamp."
  10. I find the 19 easier to carry and conceal and the capacity is only minus two rounds from the 17.
  11.   Agreed.  Plus, if you get to shoot someone in the dick I think you have pretty much unlocked an achievement.  Terrorists, home invaders and other body-armor turds need to consider that before engaging in shenanigans.   Might I get shot in the dick for this?   If the answer is "YES" then go back and re-think your strategy.
  12.   No need to apologize.  Thanks for being willing to help keep the lights on here!  :)
  13.   Head shots are such a tricky thing, though.  If you don't manage to sink rounds into the ocular triangle (between the eyes and bridge of the hose) the odds of putting their lights out are increasingly slim.  Being LEO yourself I'm sure you know and would agree that's why civilian/LE trainers push so heavily to aim for center of mass.  There's a lot more blood-bearing organs in the thorax than there are in the head.   If I am guiding someone through drills at the range, we go for multiple shots to center of body, delivered as quickly as possible while maintaining tight accuracy.  Non-standard response of at least three rounds rapidly.  Punch as many holes in them as you can.
  14. What OhShoot said is right.  Let me know if you find that you don't have a pending renewal in your "Client Area".
  15. I went through this.  I settled on 9mm and .45ACP for the most part, but still have a few .40SW around for the sake of utility.  I typically carry 9mm in either a Glock 19 or HK VP9.   The reasons I chose 9mm are the same reasons most folks do: I don't believe in stopping power fairy tales I prefer to take 2 more rounds of capacity over 1 step up in caliber It is cheaper to practice with Recoil is less which means split times are faster for me It's generally lighter to carry and the firearms can be smaller   I'm not here to throw rocks at anyone who chooses to believe that .40SW is superior.  Mathematically it *should* be, however physiologically -- when the bullet strikes meat -- the degree of superiority is not all that great.   Choose what you like.  Get good at shooting it.  Shoot the hell out of it.  And always carry it.
  16.   I laughed.
  17. Welcome to TGO, Paul.  Happy holidays to you and yours as well.
  18.   If they caught the right guy, I hope he doesn't make it to prison.  As the father of two girls, I'll rent someone the woodchipper.
  19. I've never been much of a runner even when I had to, but I do go for walks on a daily basis and my daughter (2yrs) is a ball of energy that needs another ball of energy to keep her company and run each other ragged until they both pass out.   We're also wanting a dog that can both be a pet and a protector, and will take us on as its "pack" and bond well with the family.   After speaking with MrsMonkeyMan's friend last night, we are very interested in meeting the dog she has in mind.  I just dig meeting cool dogs (preferring them to people most of the time, lol) no matter whether we're taking in a new family member or visiting, so it's a trip I will be glad to make.   The big sticking point for us is what the dog thinks of our daughter.  I really need the dog to protect her and love her as if she were one of her pups.  Too soon my daughter will be wanting to run around and play in the yard and I really want a dog that will watch over her and keep her safe.
  20.   Don't forget Willis!  They also have Willis, and if you're a kidnapper and you put him the right frame of mind he might kill your whole family!  Seriously the most badass thing I think I have ever heard someone say to their captors!!!
  21. $100 may be what it costs to do an NFA transfer through these shops then. It's likely more involved for them than a standard firearms transfer. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  22. Places I'd suggest trying in alphabetical order... Everything Weapons (Franklin) Guns & Leather (Hendersonville and Greenbrier) Guns n More (Smyrna) Law Enforcement Sales (Oak Ridge - not midstate but a Vendor)   All are vendors on TGO and all three deal in NFA items.
  23. What are you looking for?  I can recommend some folks if I know what's on your shopping list.
  24.   This is the simple truth.  Pappy is not worth the money nor the hassle.  It has become legendary only due to it's controlled limit quantity nature.
  25. Use Tapatalk.  It's the easiest way to do what you're asking.   We don't host photos on TGO; we couldn't afford to provide that much space to all of our members on our server.   It's better to use a 3rd party service like that.
