TGO Moving to Newer Server -- Sunday, Sept 25
TGO David replied to TGO David's topic in TN Gun Owners Announcements
UPDATE 10/5/2016 @ 10:30PM Central Some of the slowness that we have been experiencing has been tracked back to corruption in the SEARCH database table. I am rebuilding the search index now, but this process takes a while to complete. As a consequence, you may find that search results, including the search for new content, may be limited for a few hours. More to come. -
Eh... I think I just fixed it. @Omega Can you confirm?
-
It seems to be limited to the default TGO Theme. If you switch to the "TGO Darker" theme it works. This tells me there's a bug in the theme code, so I'll dig into that as soon as I have time.
-
Hadn't noticed that. Will check into it.

Thanks for spending some time looking at the server with me today. So far, so good!

TGO Moving to Newer Server -- Sunday, Sept 25

UPDATE 10/2/16 @ 8:00PM Central Folks, I cannot apologize enough. The switch to the new server has been one frustration after another. Performance is not what it should be and I am near the limit of my knowledge as relates to tuning it and tweaking it to accommodate our normal workload. I am investigating other options right now, including hiring someone to either go through our current server and tune it up, or to build a new one for us that is optimized to handle the load. Please continue to be patient with me.- 13 replies

Since moving most of our file storage to Amazon, I have been able to open up more space for our members to upload file attachments. While the preferred method of inserting photos into posts is to link from a photo-hosting service like SmugMug, PhotoBucket, TinyPic, etc. we realize that some folks do not want to go through the hassle of that, especially if they just want to post something for sale in the Trading Post. I strongly urge you to edit your photos offline and make them no more than 1600 x 1200 pixels in size as that is generally more than adequate for displaying on a web page, and makes wise use of the storage allocated to you. A single unedited 7-megapixel photo from an iPhone can be as large as 12MB! A photo edited down to 1600 x 1200 pixels us usually less than 800KB, or 15 times smaller. The smaller the photo, the more of them you can store in the same amount of space. The following lists the current amount of space allocated to a member based on what type of membership they have: 2MB .... Standard Member 10MB ... Benefactor 10MB ... Vendor 20MB ... Lifetime Benefactor 20MB ... Premier Sponsor These allocations may adjust over time as situations change with our hosting arrangement. You can always refer back to this thread for the latest allocations. I will update this any time I update the settings.

My family agrees with this sentiment. They're tired of seeing me in front of the computer all evening fighting with this.

UPDATE 10/1/16 @ 8:45AM Switched database engines to something supposedly a little faster. Tweaked PHP caching a bit. Fingers crossed. -
That would make sense on a tablet that only connects by wifi, but a person using a phone or a tablet with a radio for a wireless carrier would only need to drop off of their company wifi and hit the wireless signal in order to get to TGO.

Trust me, Mac... I was seeing them in realtime. I do appreciate it though. I'm frankly surprised it was even able to get that 503 error out with the server load as high as it was.
-
You're visiting at the right times because sadly there have been quite a few times lately where despite all of the efforts I've made to speed it up and keep it stable, things were anything but. I am still working on it very diligently.

I've had it with Tapatalk!!! Three hours spent tonight trying to pull the server back under control while that piece of #### software was hammering the CPU. I've completely deleted it from the server at this point. I really hope that those of you who rely on it so heavily will just give the native IPBoard mobile skin a try. As much as I hate to lose a few members over Tapatalk, I can't lose the whole forum because of it. Sorry.
-
Astute observation. Here's the ugly details... I had disabled it for some troubleshooting and forgot that I did. So I re-enabled it this evening and the server immediately went to its knees. I'm talking CPU load out the ceiling. I am assuming that maybe everyone who uses Tapatalk was suddenly getting a boatload of content updates delivered to their phones at once, so I am going to wait until much later tonight to try and turn it on again to see if it was an anomaly. If it was, awesome, I'll leave it on. But if it brings the server down like that again, I am going to turn it back off and leave it off. Yeah, I know there are some folks who swear they will stop visiting if they can't do it from Tapatalk. That's sadly a risk I will have to take if Tapatalk is what has been murdering the server. We can't tolerate that. I removed it once before for similar reasons but thought all of that had been resolved. I'm hoping this was a fluke, but if not... it is what it is.

Just picked these up tonight. The Clyde Mayes was on sample and was fantastic so I bought it. The Leadslingers... it's probably rot-gut but I've heard too much hype so I'm going to find out for myself. It certainly doesn't have much of a pedigree. [emoji38] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

LOL... everyone wants to know what's behind the doors they can't open. Honestly, that is a new feature that isn't ready yet. Nothing to see here. This isn't the link you are looking for.

UPDATE 9/30/2016 @ 8:15AM Central Several improvements have been realized over the past two days. During off-peak hours, most TGO pages seem to be loading extremely fast. During our peak times of early morning, midday and evening hours, the site is holding its own and page loads aren't abysmally slow the way they were the first few days on the new sever. You may also notice that all profile photos, file attachments, emoticons, forum icons, etc. are now serving off of Amazon Web Services. Those things load just as quickly as you would expect from Amazon's insanely powerful web delivery engines. Over time I will move even more of our content to AWS so that we can leverage their infrastructure. In the meantime I am continuing to chip away at things and will be bringing some new features online that I think you will enjoy. -
Welcome to TGO! I've visited INGunOwners a few times over the years myself.

UPDATE 9/27/2016 @ 5:15PM Central I was able to make a minor change to the server today at lunch and it seems to have moved the needle in the correct direction but there is more to do. I am going to monitor TGO through the evening and may have to take it offline at some point to try my next planned change to shore things up further. I appreciate everyone's patience with me as I continue to chip away at this and get our new server tuned for optimal performance. As before, more to come... -

UPDATE 9/27/2016 @ 6:10AM Central I am continuing to fight slowness on the new server and frankly it's driving me up the wall. Unfortunately there is little I can do to improve it today as it's "back to work" for me which means TGO will have to survive on its own for the next 10 hours or so. More to come. -
What was the glitch? (I can try to add it back)

Try again. I'll do almost anything to keep Oh Shoot from starting more threads about things that aren't working.
