Just for reference if you have to deal with an International shipment, DHL is awesome based on my past experiences. My latest shipment through them was from Estonia and I got it either 3 or 4 days (back last year so I don't remember for sure). The speed at which it was traveling across Europe prior to getting on a plane was impressive. The shipping charge was around $23 USD.

Not that I agree with the drastic increase in gas prices around these shortages, etc., I heard an explanation a couple of years ago that makes sense, at least in my mind. Gas stations set their prices based on what they will have to pay to refill their storage tanks, not what they paid for the gas currently sitting in their tanks. I guess technically a lot of product costs are based that way, just seems gas is more prone to do so. So supply and demand pricing affects both the gas station and consumer.

Well, I guess Mr. Becker's comment that I quoted is misleading IMO. I will though stand by my comment "good luck with telling folks in Alaska and Montana they can't carry a firearm", maybe just not in connection with this story.

I love my warrior as well. If you're wanting something for the vehicle, you might want to consider the Prerun 2 (headlamp model). Great output level and hands free if you need to do something on your vehicle at night. Due to the 90 deg design, it can can be taken off the head strap and clipped on a backpack or shoulder strap, etc. Very compact. Head strap is top quality. The DBJ-2 is the antenna I mentioned in my previous post. For reference that particular model is designed for backpacking/field use and is not intended to be "permanently" mounted outside base antenna for several reasons. Dr. Fong's DBJ-1 is what you would need if you want to use it as a base J-Pole antenna. With that said, a J-Pole design is a little more limiting than a ground plane vertical antenna, so for a base antenna I would recommend the ground plane route. If interested, just let me know and I can throw out some antenna suggestions. Another option if you are specifically trying to reach a certain location, you can use a Yagi directional antenna that will give you more signal strength since you're dealing with an HT. You can set up a rotating mount if you need to vary the direction of your signal. Good luck with your endeavor.

Just to give you a frame of reference, I'm around 700' and participate in a 2m simplex net, and the net controller is out of Mt. Juliet so he is about 26 miles away from me. I think he is in the 900'-ish elevation range with a good base antenna. I can talk to him easily off my 5w HT using an dual band J Pole roll up emergency antenna. It's more about elevation, a good antenna, and no major obstructions between stations, than power. Obviously power helps but is only one component. You will lose some range since you'll be UHF compared to 2m VHF.

I'm in the camp of the smaller capacity generators (2200W-ish) rather than the larger capacity ones that will power most, if not all, of the house. The larger generators are more of a "fuel hog" than the smaller generators. I'm of the mindset, I'd rather have a more limited amount of power for a longer period of time, than more power than I would likely need in an emergency, for a shorter period of time. Mine is a converted tri-fuel unit. In the event the power is off, I'm going to be in conservation mode so my energy requirements will be on the minimal side. Cooking will be done with propane. Heat would be with gas logs, assuming the natural gas is still on, propane if it's not. I have some solar capability as well. I guess I'm somewhat okay with my current situation, it could always be better, but I find I can sleep at night at this point.

For reference what are the distances and elevations of each area you're trying to reach? I got in ham radio in September of last year and have really been surprised how far you can simplex on 2m given decent elevation and a good antenna setup.

Another off-road park you might want to check out is Turkey Bay OHV park up in the Land Between the Lakes area. I used to ride dirt bikes there back in my younger years. Yep, just unplug. I've become a lot more disconnected with the news ever since I got into ham radios back in September. I use to listen to talk radio on my 45 min commute in the mornings and it kept me worked up. Now I interact with a great bunch of guys from about 5:30am to 6:00 to just cut up and have a good time. At 6:00 am we have a Bible study net with about 30 folks on the 147.015 Nashville repeater where we pray for each other, read the Bible, and then comment if you want. It's been a great blessing in my life. If anyone is interested, but isn't a ham, the repeater is linked to a smartphone app called Broadcastify. Look for AF4TZ 146.670 Mhz Nashville Repeater. (You can only listen through the app.) If you do have a desire to listen through the app, shoot me a PM so I can be aware and mention that you're one of the ones listening in. We have several from out of state that listen, and at least one guy from Australia right now.

I'm not a gamer nor a IT person so I can't add value to your processor question, other than totally agree the video card is the key to a good system just based on what I know for CAD workstations. Just wondering if the PC will be used for other things (school work, etc.), or will it be just for gaming? If just for gaming, is there an advantage of a PC over a game console?
