  1.   Yeah, I quoted the comment I posted earlier in this thread.  I think you guys can see there was nothing 'questionable' about my comment but mine has not appeared in the comments section, either - and I doubt that it will.
  2. While it generally does take more Bantam eggs to make a good breakfast, I do find some advantages to them, as well.  I generally like my eggs over-easy with the white part cooked but the yellow nice and 'runny'.  I find it easier to flip Bantam eggs in the skillet without busting the yolk.  It also seems easier to cook the white more fully while leaving the yellow runny.  Finally, there sometimes seems to be a slightly higher yolk to white ratio than with normal eggs but I might just be imagining that.   It is kind of funny to see the eggs in the nest.  The Bantams and the Leghorn all pretty much lay in the same nest and the Leghorn lays much larger eggs.  In fact, one of the Leghorns (I think it was one of the two that died) laid eggs that were so large that when we put them in egg cartons that once held XL store-bought eggs the lid on the carton wouldn't even close.  Biggest danged chicken eggs I have ever seen and they were consistently that large.  I actually have to wonder if she didn't end up getting egg bound and if that is what killed her.
  3.   I see the point you are trying to make but must point out a flaw in your logic.  Do you really think that some dumbass who shoots at his dog inside an apartment, thereby shooting through the walls and endangering people in the next apartment, is going to let a little thing like not having an HCP stop him from carrying and sitting next to you in a restaurant?  Sure, it would be an extra charge to tack on after he did something stupid but I don't think the likelihood of his getting caught before doing something stupid would be all that high.  In other words, I'm not sure Constitutional carry would make that much difference in the number of dangerous morons who may be carrying firearms in public without a permit as many such dangerous morons probably don't worry a whole lot about carry laws either way.
  4.   Actually, if you look at the list of ingredients on the label of 'Mexican' Coca-Cola, don't be surprised to see both sugar and high fructose corn syrup listed.  They used to be just sugar but a couple of years back - about the time I had to switch to 'diet' soft drinks, anyhow - I noticed that the label changed.  Maybe not all of them but some, anyhow.
  5.   You always hear this crap and I think it is BS.  I think the truth isn't that Americans won't do these jobs.  Instead, I think the truth is that Americans who are paying taxes, etc. can't afford to do those jobs for the same wages as a 'migrant worker' who is likely getting paid under the table and doesn't have to give a big chunk of their earnings to Uncle Sam.
  6.   Because it is important to feel pretty.  Remember, morale can make a difference in a survival situation.   Sorry.  Couldn't resist.
  7.   Pickled eggs are good.  Pickled Bantam eggs are even better because they are bite-sized - you can just pop the whole thing in your mouth.   I don't even get as complicated as using a dill pickle recipe.  I just add a sprig of fresh dill, a whole garlic clove or two, some whole peppercorns and slices of jalapeno or habanero to the eggs in the jar and then pour heated, pre-diluted vinegar over them.   I usually do fairly large batches so I put them in pint canning jars or large jelly size canning jars and can them so they don't have to be refrigerated until opened.  They will keep for a good while if canned properly.  I haven't made any in a couple of years - I think it will be about time when my peppers come in this year.  I will admit that the last time I made them I screwed up.  I was trying to get fancy and experiment with different vinegars so I did some with balsamic vinegar.  They tasted good but the vinegar turned the eggs black.  It was hard to get past that so some of them went to waste.  Luckily, I didn't do a lot of them since it was an experiment.   My mom hasn't made any pickled eggs in a while.  I don't think she likes them all that much but she used to make them for my late father and me.  Her method is ridiculously simple but makes really good pickled eggs.  Her method is to wait until all the pickles in a jar of store-bought dill pickles have been eaten, pour the solution from the jar into a pot and heat it a little, pack the eggs into the empty pickle jar, pour the heated solution over them, put the lid on and keep them in the fridge.  Works really well.
  8.   Yep.  A couple of years ago I came across this older article from Mother Earth News where they tested some of the various, supposed methods of preserving fresh eggs.   http://www.motherearthnews.com/real-food/fresh-eggs.aspx?PageId=1#axzz2XFQPbUuB   Excerpt:   I have a few Bantams - only a couple of hens and one rooster - as well as one White Leghorn that came to me from a friend who passed last year.  I actually got three White Leghorns, originally, but only one is still around.  My Bantams were given to me by a farmer who also has a few game chickens running free-range with the Bantams so I think they are actually a Bantam-game cross.  I think the hens (not the rooster) killed two of the much larger Leghorns.  The Leghorns were really good layers and I'd like to have two or three more good layers like them.  To my thinking, if I am going to fool with feeding and taking care of three hens then I had might as well feed and take care of five or six and get more eggs but since I have limited space I worry that the Bantam/game hens would kill any new additions, too.
  9.   Some 'things' are irreplaceable.  Things that belonged to my late father, grandparents, great-grandparents and so on.  Those things are one of a kind because of the family connection and I place a much higher value on them and that connection than on the life of some lowlife scumbag who would steal them.  No, I wouldn't shoot to protect those things but only because it is against the law.  If our laws were more reasonable - like Texas - then a choice between irreplaceable things with priceless, sentimental value and the life of some lowlife crook would be no choice, at all.  I will abide by the laws as they stand but if our state government were to entertain the idea of allowing the use of deadly force to protect property then I would support such a change.   Other things are just 'stuff', however.  In those cases, even if it were legal, I would not be likely to shoot to protect property.  Not because I think the scumbag's life is 'of more value' but simply because I wouldn't want the hassle of having shot someone over 'stuff' - even if it were legal to do so.   All that said, I agree with the fears that the residents in this case have gone too far with the fliers they have posted, etc.  I don't disagree with them taking a stand but things would probably 'end better' for them if they weren't so vocal and extreme in the declarations they make before-hand.
  10.   You guys ever hear of bobcats?  I have personally seen one run across the road in front of me that was about twice the size of the 'average' bobcat.  I wouldn't want to tangle with a normal sized one much less that bruiser.  Would a bobcat attack a person?  Who knows - it is a wild animal and so I figure it might do just about anything.   Besides that, the OP never said that all of his hiking and back country camping are in East Tennessee.  Florida officially recognizes that there are mountain lions/cougars/panthers (or whatever name you want to use) living there.  I don't think it is outside the realm of possibility that there are still a few lingering in the wilder areas of Georgia.
  11.   Glad you are enjoying it.  I didn't realize until after I had bought mine that Savage/Stevens offers a ghost ring type setup.  I have since seen one at my LGS (who didn't previously have any of this model - I would have bought from them if they had) and it looks really good.  I like ghost ring sites in general, anyway.  Still, for the uses I have for it the bead sight will be fine, I think.  Might even be better for quickly pointing on target at self and home defense ranges in a low light situation.
  12.   So was every, single individual who signed the Declaration of Independence.   I'm not necessarily putting Snowden on the same level.  However, when the government is betraying its own people then perhaps the only way to do the right thing for one's country and it's people is to act against that government.
  13.   I don't know that this is necessarily true as I do not know Florida law.  However, by TN law (in simplified language) you can't be a party to starting a confrontation and then be legally justified in the use of deadly force when that confrontation is not going your way.  It is my opinion (and I acknowledge that this is all it is) that by following/stalking Martin - even after Martin attempted to evade him - Zimmerman participated in starting the confrontation.  Basically, he was acting like a swinging dick then shot Martin when his (Zimmerman's) ass couldn't back up his mouth, so to speak.   I do not believe that Martin was an 'angel' and, yes, he probably could have done more to avoid the confrontation that ended with his death.  That said, I can't help but think what I would do if I were walking around in a neighborhood where I had every right to be (heck, this was apparently the neighborhood where Martin was living at the time) and some dude I didn't know started following me and possibly trying to 'question' me - some dude who is obviously not a cop.  As an adult with, hopefully, a bit better control of my temper than a teenager, I don't think I would stop and get into a fist fight.  Instead, I would call the cops, myself and tell them that some weird dude was following me and that he was starting to make me fear for my life.   Bottom line comes down to this:  If Zimmerman had not been following Martin - and I have seen no claims that Martin had actually done anything to justify Zimmerman following him - then the confrontation would never have happened.  Therefore, to my mind, the root cause of the entire fiasco was Zimmerman following Martin without reason and (apparently) attempting to stop and question Martin despite having no authority to do so.  Therefore, it was Zimmerman who is responsible for everything that followed.  Honestly, I believe that he makes responsible gun owners and carriers look bad.

    44mm Glock

The anchorman on WBIR just declared that someone is suspected of stealing a LEO's service pistol from the LEO's home while the LEO was on vacation. According to the talking head, the pistol was a 44 millimeter Glock. Now, I am no fan of Glock. They just generally aren't for me. However, if they are now making a 44mm, I might have to get me one of them. Should be just the thing for SD against random, roving T-Rex. Do y'all think limpwristing would be a problem?
  15. I (and probably others on here) have meds I have to take in the morning and meds (some the same, some different) I have to take at bedtime.  If these things block all moisture from getting in, I can see getting about six of these, marking them "AM" and "PM" and then putting one dose each of the corresponding meds in each tube and keeping them in my get home kit.  Might be a good, compact, waterproof way to have three days worth of meds on hand and separated into doses.  Sure, there are other ways of doing that but the waterproof and compact nature of these things make them appealing.
  16. I'd say that one 'place' most folks don't want to be when SHTF is trying to come through the front door of most members of TGO uninvited and with bad intent.
  17. Has anyone else heard of this one?  I read it years ago in a 'natural remedies' book.  I'm trying to verify it on the 'Net but can't find much:   Anyhow, the idea goes that the reason raw Irish potatoes turn reddish-brown when left exposed to air is because they contain a high amount of iodine.  In fact, I remember the source I read claiming that eating too much raw potato, while probably not a significant risk for an adult, could cause iodine poisoning in a small child.  The source claimed that, in the absence of a chemical antiseptic, a slice of raw potato can be applied to a cut/scrape just as one might put iodine on a similar wound.   In trying to find verification of this claim, I found other, supposed uses for raw potatoes in 'first aid'.  One claim was that a slice of potato placed (and, presumably, left for some time) over the sight where one has a splinter can help 'draw' the splinter out.  Another claim was that a poultice of mashed up raw potato could be applied early on in order to prevent a black eye.  A third claim was that a poultice of mashed, raw potato -  when applied immediately to [first degree] burns - can help prevent blistering or scarring and speed healing of the burn.  I have also, personally, heard (again, can't verify) that a slice of raw Irish potato placed on a boil will 'draw' the boil and reduce it or even make it go completely away.  Can anyone verify any/all of these claims?   Other information I found while attempting to verify my original point was that the potato is very nearly a 'complete food' as it provides protein, many vitamins and so on.  In fact, there are apparently only two essential vitamins that aren't contained in potatoes.  The sources I saw said that Irish peasants actually got a pretty complete diet by eating potatoes, drinking buttermilk and eating oatmeal.   So, it sounds like potatoes are pretty good things to have around for SHTF.  Even better, they are easy to store fairly long term - when we used to grow lots of potatoes, mom and dad would spread them out on the (dirt) floor of a storage building and cover them with lime.  We'd eat on them all Winter and often have a few left to sprout/plant for the following growing season.
  18. From the quote in the OP:         No reason?  No REASON?  I watched part of an episode of his 'show', once and based only on that mercifully short but still nauseating experience, I already hated that pompous, overblown, self-aggrandizing piece of excrement just for the way he struts around like he is some sort of ultimate badass.  Just looking at his scuzzy-looking self (not to mention his equally scuzzy wife) makes me feel like I need a shower.  Then he goes and says something stupid to indicate that he believes people acting in self defense, "kill people for no reason."  Yeah, well, look asshat - if I shoot someone, whether it kills them or not, it will not be, 'for no reason.'  Instead, it will be because they are threatening the lives/well-being of me and mine.  That isn't, "no reason' you b*stard.  It is a damn good reason.
  19.   You know the one I'm talking about:   http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/topic/49895-on-my-way-to-the-ergraphic/
  20.   I guess 'Jonathan' minds think alike.  In fact, I couldn't resist posting a comment to that effect.  My comment is awaiting 'moderation' - we will see if it actually gets posted.  The following is what I wrote:
  21.   Maybe I'll stop by on the 24th and beat the rush.  Who knows, I might even find some .22!
  22. Let's see, how has the whole 'enemy of my enemy' thing worked out for the U.S. government in the Middle East in times past?   Hmmm...well, there was this one feller whose cause/forces got support because they were 'resisting' the Soviets.  Now, who could that have been?   Let's see...oh, yeah.  Osama bin Laden.  That worked out great for us, didn't it?   Then there was this other feller, leader of some country or another, who we declared to be an ally because he was opposed to Iran.  What was that feller's name?  Sam Hessian?  No, no.  Ah, yes - Saddam Hussein.  That was it, Saddam Hussein.   So, how long do y'all figure it will be before our military personnel are facing the very arms that our government is going to send to these rebels?

    50th Henry's

Wow, you are going to have some fun!  I only have one Henry - the 'basic' .22 model - but it is a load of fun.  I'd rather shoot it than one of my semiauto .22LR rifles any day.  I do have two, other lever rifles - an older (microgroove) Marlin in .44 Magnum I found used last year and the Marlin/Glenfield 336 my late father bought in the early '70s.  I think I'd eventually like to have a lever in .357.  I love me some lever guns!  Those 'brass' look receivers on the Henrys are gorgeous.
  24.   Fixed it for them.
  25. Meh, I think Obama-butt-kisser rags have to, occasionally, run a 'story' or 'editorial' that is (usually mildly) critical of Barry.  The reason this is necessary is so that next week when they tell you he walked across the Potomac to heal handicapped children in a Maryland hospital they can claim to be unbiased because they 'criticized' him in the past.
