  1. I think I have probably extolled the virtues of cheesecloth on the forum, before.
  2. I can now officially say 100% for sure that the HCP is NOT currently renewing on an eight year cycle while the driver's license is now good for eight years. I had to be in Kingston early this morning so I went to the Rockwood Drivers Services Center and renewed my permit in person. Walked right up to the counter, filled out the paperwork at the counter, had my picture taken, paid ($62.50) and was out within about 15 minutes of walking in the door. Before renewing I specifically asked the (pretty) lady at the counter if the eight year renewal had gone into effect, yet and she said that it hasn't. I also asked about the expiration date on my driver's license, which I renewed via the Internet earlier this month, is good for eight years and which arrived in the mail this week. She said that there wasn't an error - our DL expiration date is no longer automatically set to our birth date. That is annoying because expiring on my birthday made it easier to remember.
  3. Your DL will be eight when renewed. Renewed mine online Saturday before last. The new license came yesterday and is good until 2024 - but doesn't expire on my birthday.
  4. I don't think anyone needs to incite panic buying. Hillary Clinton is going to be the Democratic nominee (and likely next president, sadly) so panic buying is going to happen. Encouraging people to get ahead of the panic buying while there is still time is a 'public service announcement' to my mind - not that most folks on here should need it.
  5. Forget the foil. Wrap them in cheesecloth and keep the cheesecloth damp with the liquid of your choice - I like a vinegar/water mix because it gives a nice 'tangy' base for my home made dry rub which I put on after the meat comes off the smoker. Vinegar, water and apple juice are a nice mix to use on pork, too and I used a vinegar, water and white cranberry juice mix the one time I smoked a whole turkey. Just leave the cheesecloth on the entire time - the smoke still gets to the meat but it doesn't dry out. You may feel like you are unwrapping a mummy when all is said and done but it works really, really well. You won't get as much of a 'bark' but you will get plenty of smoke and a nice color on the surface - and you will likely still get some 'bark'. Of course, I am talking about doing the ribs over very indirect heat (as in my offset smoker.) I don't think the cheesecloth would work out too well directly over a flame/heat. I'd like to have one of those rib racks for use on the grill but probably wouldn't ever use one on the smoker, myself (not that there is anything wrong with it.) I use the cheesecloth method for just about everything I smoke - at least when I remember to get cheesecloth. For ribs, roasts and so on just wrap a couple of layers around it and make sure it is entirely covered. For chicken breasts, I lay those directly on the cooking grid and then just cover them with a piece of cheesecloth. Just remember to keep the cheesecloth damp - although once it really gets started the juices from the meat will sometimes help dampen the cloth which makes it sort of 'self basting'.
  6. When did the renewal cycle change? Are you sure that is accurate? Last I heard, the state legislature changed the HCP cycle to every five years to be pro-rated so it would coincide with our driver's licenses and then promptly changed the driver's license cycle to every eight years, completely invalidating the logic behind all the hassle of pro-rating and so on to get the HCP on a five year cycle because the two still won't sync.
  7. Thanks for posting this. I am not that interested, personally, because I have just about sworn off buying any more semiauto pistols but I reposted it over on the Heritage forum. Some of the folks there might be interested.
  8. That looks danged good. I fired my smoker (I use an offset smoker so I don't have to use a burn barrel but I do like your old school setup) over the Memorial Day weekend and did a brisket, a pork butt and some chicken breasts. I made a tomato based sauce for the beef and a vinegar based for the pork. I have pics of the brisket but don't want to hijack your thread. I actually still have some of the meat left. I put part of the pork and chicken in the freezer and have the remaining brisket with me to stick in the fridge at work to make sandwiches a day or two this week. I am glad I have some of mine left because that helps me resist the urge to take a bite out of the computer screen when I look at the pic of yours.
  9. Yep. My renewal came in the mail yesterday. Mine is also up at the end of August and the document said that a lifetime permit can be obtained for $500. This is one of those times that a bill should have become law immediately upon being signed because it is kind of - no, not just 'kind of', it is - screwing over those of us whose renew dates happen to fall within the 8 months between the bill being signed into law and it actually going into effect. Needless to say I won't be going 'lifetime' this time around. Maybe next time. On another note, the document said that I should allow 3 months for processing. That is kinda dumb considering I only received the papers yesterday - about two and a half months before it expires. I know, as long as I apply beforehand I should be okay and it probably won't take three months for processing - although it did take nearly the full three months for my original permit to come because I applied back when there was a large upswing in the number of applicants - but still if they have up to three months to process then they should be required to get the papers to us at least four months in advance.
  10. I am not sure I understand what you meant. Are you saying that, unlike other endorsements, the HCP shouldn't cost extra or are you saying that other endorsements don't cost extra and neither should the HCP? I ask because other endorsements do cost extra. I have an 'F' endorsement on mine (or at lest had, not sure if it is still on there or not but it was for a former job so it doesn't really matter.) When I got it and every time I renewed and kept it (in person), it was an extra five bucks. I could handle five bucks whenever I renew my license better than fifty bucks every four years, though.
  11. I don't think that is it because you have to click a box when applying to renew your driver's license that is a similar thing - a statement that says something to the effect that you certify that this is your driver's license and that the information given is correct and I believe there is some indication of a penalty for providing false information although I can't remember the details. In other words, pretty much the same thing as what you are talking about for the HCP.
  12. Just a bit of a mini-rant. I just renewed my driver's license online. It took about five minutes and I got a confirmation to print in case my new license doesn't arrive before my old one expires. While I was at it, I thought I'd check and see if my HCP (which expires in a few months) could also be renewed online. Nope. I think that is pretty stupid. I mean, if we had to renew in person I might understand not being able to do so online but we can renew by mail so why not via the Internet? I guess being able to quickly and easily renew online would just make staying legal to carry too easy. Bad enough that we have to pay for the privilege to exercise our right to be equipped for self defense. The state and the Department of Safety could at least give us this quick, easy option for doing so.
  13. Through the week I have a Spyderco Resilience in my pocket. I prefer a blade that is closer to four inches or a little more because I just like them better. I mostly use it for opening packages, peeling fruit and sometimes cutting other food at work but I still prefer a blade of about this length so I went looking for something with a blade a little longer than four inches as soon as the state law changed a couple of years ago. It took a little while but I finally settled on the Resilience. I looked at some of the longer Cold Steel knives in roughly the same (budget) price range but they seem kind of bulky whereas the Resilience offers a fairly heft blade size in a not so bulky knife. It is my first Spyderco and is one of their 'budget' line but I really like it, especially after I convexed the edge (I just plain like convexed edges on pretty much any knife except a Scandi.) It is 'only' 8Cr13MoV steel but I got it sharp and by hitting my sharpening steel and a leather belt about once a week or so I keep it shaving sharp or pretty close. In my EDC bag I also have a Victorinox Trekker in case I forget to put the Spyderco in my pocket, a Gerber Suspension multi-tool in case I need the tools and a Buck Paklite skinner in a home-made kydex sheath in case I need a fixed blade for something. Funny that I work a desk job but still find a 'need' for all of them from time to time although I mostly carry the varied blades for a 'just in case' situation more than because I need them daily. When not at work I often still have the EDC bag but instead of the Spyderco I often carry a fixed blade, either a neck knife or a belt sheath knife.
  14. I am thinking that the more likely scenario is that 8 of 9 shots missed their target and, since one of the errant rounds did hit a bystander, the NYPD doesn't want to admit that 'collateral damage' could have been much worse and so they are peddling this nonsense that the jacket stopped some of the bullets.. I am thinking that only one round penetrated the Carhartt jacket because only one round actually made contact with the Carhartt jacket. Instead of admitting that this was a failure of skill, training or whatever where these, two officers are concerned, however, New York's response will be an attempted ban on Carhartt jackets.
  15. Probably so. Not sure how 'deep' into filming the next season they would be at this point and whether they would be past filming the first, few episodes or not. Also, I think many of the long-term actors on the show have moved to the area so it could be that one (or both) are killed off but were just out riding together in the area because they haven't changed residences, yet. The more I think about it, though, the more I have my doubts that Glen will buy it. I like the character and Yeun's portrayal of him so I don't necessarily 'want' him to die but I think that at this point the show 'needs' him to die. It pissed me off when he got the bat in the, um, other medium but the story line really benefited from it more than it would benefit from the deaths of the other, most likely candidates. I am seeing the strength in the argument that it might be Abraham who gets killed, partly because they have made so much effort in the last, few episodes to make him more than just a two-dimensional 'added muscle', second string character. Thing is, they still haven't done enough for me to believe that killing him off would have nearly the same impact but they have done just enough that I'd kind of like to see the character developed a little more.
  16. That logic hasn't worked out so well with Haslam or Harwell or even Ramsey, really. The difference is that one party says, "Get ready - we are your enemy and we are coming for you," while the other says, "We are on your side so while we stand side by side with you don't mind that knife we are sticking in your back." Personally, I find both reprehensible.
  17. I agree. The problem is that, as I mentioned in my previous thread, laws that originate in Kalifornistan often metastasize until they spread throughout the nation via the feds. Just as none of these politicians on either side give a tinker's damn about We the People, none of them give a hairy rat's posterior about 'the children'. It is all a bunch of propaganda designed to cast people who argue for our rights in a negative light as if we want children and others to be killed by criminals. That way they can argue emotion and myth rather than fact and logic because logic is not on their side. For example - and this is a variation on an example I use a lot, I doubt that some maniac is going to say, "Well, I'd really like to kill my entire family and then go out and randomly murder fifty or sixty people but, darnit, having that gun would be illegal and I wouldn't want to break the law so I guess I won't massacre anyone, today." I think that the laws against committing a massacre are just a bit more serious than a law against owning a particular type of gun or a magazine with a particular capacity. I think the politicians realize that, too and maybe even some of their disciples. Still, they use that same, old, tired argument to try and justify taking rights away from people who aren't going to commit a massacre and manage to convince a certain segment of the brainwashed (or simply brain dead) general public that it makes sense. It is kind of like trying to prevent teenage sex by outlawing back seats in cars - it will have no impact on the problem and removes the ability to have something that is legitimately useful for many people. Yeah, I pretty well hate them, too.
  18. Looks like Norman Reedus and Steven Yeun were out riding motorcycles together, recently, when they stopped to help out at the scene of a car accident. Because of this, it sounds like that in addition to probably being pretty good guys in real life, both of their characters might be around in some capacity in the next season of The Walking Dead. Reason being that they were apparently in close proximity to where TWD is shooting for the upcoming season. http://time.com/4329592/walking-dead-norman-reedus-steven-yeun-car-accident/
  19. Don't forget who was instrumental in getting the ball rolling on California anti-gun laws - the same laws which likely later lead to and even served as a model for federal anti-gun laws - in the first place. Who was that? Yep, the Lord High Priest of Republicans, Governor Ronald Reagan who unabashedly supported an act - introduced by another Republican, by the way - which made it illegal for the average citizen to carry a loaded firearm in public. This was the same Ronald Reagan who wrote a letter passionately supporting the Brady law. Reagan supported gun control. I suspect that many other Republican politicians support gun control they just know better than to say it out loud. In our own state, Haslam and Harwell obviously support gun control. It seems to me that most politicians are elitists who don't believe that the common rabble needs to be able to defend themselves - especially against over-reach by those very politicians. It is just like professional wrestling. One side are the 'baby faces' while the other side are the 'heels' except here which is which depends on which line of B.S. a person is willing to buy. Neither side is on our side.
  20. Great lines on that one. It looks so refined that I would never have guessed it was that big if not for the picture of it in your hand. To paraphrase a popular tune from the early '90s: I LIKE BIG KNIVES and I cannot lie!
  21. Wow. You have posted up pics of many attractive knives that you have made and this one may well be the most beautiful with the most stunning workmanship yet. PITA or not, that thing looks phenomenal.
  22. They only make one model of .380 - the P3AT. There has been a first and second generation but only the one model and the trigger pull is about the same on both gens. Why the heck did he have it in his sock? I have an ankle holster for mine that I bought at a gun show. It is inexpensive and works great - it is basically like a belly band but sized to fit around the ankle. It retains the pistol, keeps it in one place and covers the trigger. I hardly ever use it but if I want to carry the P3AT on my ankle it will be in the holster. If a person can afford the pistol, the ammo and the carry permit then he or she can afford such a simple, inexpensive but effective holster. IIRC, when I bought it (which was a few years back) that holster cost less than a single box of .380 range ammo. Of course, being that he was on school grounds and apparently inside the school building wasn't it illegal for him to have it on him, at all? Seems like that would be more than a misdemeanor.
  23. Great looking knife. If the pics give the 'true' color I like that orange G10. In the pic, it looks to have sort of a brownish or 'burnt' orange look more than what I usually think of as 'blaze orange'.. Almost looks like some kind of exotic wood.
  24. I found this interesting video on YouTube in which Bowie knives of various styles and time periods from 1820 - 1870 are discussed. Others will probably enjoy it, as well, but I know that Spots will (if he hasn't already seen it.) One, really cool part comes at 9:06 or so the gentleman in the video discusses what he calls, "One of the most intriguing and important knives," of its, particular time period - and that knife has a connection to Knoxville, Tennessee. Beautiful knife, too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgDLPTAGw-k
  25. Okay, so let me get this straight.  Local law enforcement departments - in this case in Arizona - helping the Feds enforce (sometimes unconstitutional) gun control laws is just fine.  Local law enforcement tackling an issue that seems to be a much bigger problem in states such as Arizona by trying to combat illegal immigration through enforcing laws which the Feds want to ignore, however, infringes on Federal authority and the officials of those departments will end up in court over it.   http://www.newsmax.com/TheWire/sheriff-joe-arpaio-raids-illegal/2016/05/03/id/726885/
