Do you have the tritium or the phosphorous model?

Finally found my old Swiss Army Brand compass yesterday. Model is Recta Type DP2. Anyone have any experience with these? Still seems to be in good working order, needle settles quickly. One problem is a large bubble in the capsule now.

Me and a friend of mine are planning on a day early spring where we can take our kids on an all day hike. I do need to get a good compass course and study up so we can teach the boys. Good for all of us to retain that kind of skill.

Admittedly biased here, cause I'm a revolver fan through and through. If you've just GOTTA do it, then I'd go with the Smith. Just my opinion. I know others have other opinions, but they're all wrong!:D:D Just kidd'n. I have to carry a .40 at work, and I'm just not much on the .40. Long stories there I won't get into. I do like the .357 though. You've got a lot of versatility there for defensive packing or carrying in the woods or what not. Rat shot, 125JHP, 158 grain, 180 grain. Good points made here on the Taurus too. But you do need to handle/shoot both. Find what works for you. My revolver fetish may not be right for you. Someone else's auto fetish may not either. Bottom line is, if your not comfortable with it, there's a chance you may not be confident or competent with it. Get what you're comfortable with and train with it till you hate training with it. After that, train some more. That said, I sure hate to see you get rid of that fine piece of machinery. Wish I had something left to swap you for it. Good luck to you brother.

Thanks fellers. Been looking at a Cammenga at a local store. I believe its the phosphorous and not the tritium. Can pick it up for 37 + tax. Kind of like to have the tritium though. Also been looking a the Brunton 15TDCL, the Silva Ranger 515, and the Brunton 8099 Pro on ebay. 8099 is a little pricey for me. Looks like I've got a good compass course manual and a good vacation (time to study and learn) in the near future.

What would be the best choice in a compass for a feller to obtain? Of course that'll have to be tempered with cost, but I would like to have the best one I can find for the money. Also, where could I find a good compass training course. Sure do need a refresher, skills have gotten rusty. How good are the training videos, such as the one from Brunton, etc? I am looking at some of the Bruntons, as described in the maps and orienteering thread, but the most important thing is for me to find some real good educational materials in this area. I might remember a little about shooting an azimuth, nothing about declination, and I have no friggin idea what a clinometer is! Now you see how bad shape I'm in, huh?

Got to break her in this morning. Went to my buddy's range where he has some steel popper targets. Didn't do any time on paper targets yet though. Stepped out back of his shop and set up. 65 yards from there to the half size steel silhouettes he has. Shot half decent with some old 130gr AE round nose FMJ. It liked the few 38+P's I brought. Then went to the full house. Had some left over rounds of 357 in Corbon, Hydrashok, and Golden Sabre, just some odd-out rounds that I just had a few (6-8) each of. Sounded off with a good bit of buck and roar. The targets stood up, took notice, and went ta swingin'. Enjoyed it so much at 65 yards I never bothered to move up to the 25. Really happy with this baby! Got it stoked right now with the 125gr Hornady XTP, also have Speer Gold Dot 125 and Federal C357B 125JHP as well. Figured the Hornady would be good for all around packin in the woods in the Smith 586 too. It's hard to describe how friggin happy I am now to once again have a good quality brace of revolvers. It's like going back to what ya just know is right for ya!

Yeah, I know, but I was too LAZY to type out the full "three and one sixteenth" bit. Speaking of that, the 3 1/16" is the one I wanted for sure. For one thing, I think it looks a little more "bidness like" but I was also wondering how much velocity and accuracy one might gain from the little bit of extra length. I know there's a formula out there for how much velocity is lost/gained with shorter/longer barrels, and I believe some of that will depend on what commercial ammo you use or what powder you use (slow/medium/fast burn rate). All that factored with bullet weight and construction being equal, say 125 grain Gold Dot or XTP for example for the .357. That, and do you have any recommendations on the best powder to use for .357 as far as what brand and burn rate and why? I probably wont handload a whole lot for the 101, except for .38 practice ammo, but I will for my 586 6". The 101 is mainly defense - duty backup and off duty primary since I'm a revolver nut - but the Smith is hunting and defense. Now for that I'll load some 125's and either 158's or 180's. Thinking about the 180's (deer, coyote, hogs, the occasional blue wildebeest:rolleyes:). I'd really like to settle on a powder I could use for all the above to keep it simple and save a little money, if practical to do so. Anyway, sorry for the long verbal spew. Got the SP101 3" in today! Beeeyooteeful! Reminds me of my old one I had several years ago, and have missed ever since I sold it (dang such foolishness). Ruger must have improved the action a bit over the years. Had some action work done on my old one and this one still seems smoother than I remember. Trigger stages very nicely. Good to have one in my hands again though. Haven't gotten much work done at all tonight, seeing as how I've been fondling and molesting this thing since this afternoon! Gonna go break it in tomorrow.

Good to know that cause I was looking around for another Silva. Now where to find a good Brunton at a good price cuz that one in the link above, while being something I would love to have, it was too spensive!

When I'm off and out I'll carry the Taurus 85 ultalite loaded with 125 grain Speer Gold Dots and 2, sometimes 4 speed strips of same. I was hoping my SP101 would be in today. At that point I'll carry it with 4 speed strips and the 85 as a bug, maybe with 1 speed strip right beside it. I always think of the handgun as a tool to use to fight your way back to your long gun. When I get to my truck, I'll transition to the good ole Model 94!

I always carry. Went to a gun show in Nastyville some years ago. I was off duty. Saw the signs. I asked a couple of Metro officers about it. If somebody could make some calls next time they're seen and have quite a few residents come on out, might pass the hint to move on to easier pickins. Just to clarify, I did get the Smith 586, he wouldn't come down off of 500 and I knew he would get that from someone, judging by what they've been selling for on the auction site. So, I traded into it. Piece that I had only 300 in plus some boot. Got him down to 400 that way. Very pleased with it. Now I've ordered a Ruger SP101. Couldn't stand it anymore. Bowed out of the one on the auction site. A few got into a bidding war and drove the price up to 376. I just refused to pay that for a used one. Hard-headed I am! Got a friend who's an FFL. Cheapest he could find it was 396 plus tax and shipping. His distributor only had 3 left, so I went ahead and ordered it. Should be in tomorrow.

Searching for a Smith or Ruger 357 and ran across the Smith and Wesson 520 on Gunbroker. Anyone know anything about them? Appears Smith ran them for a while, but I don't find them on the site now. What are they worth? Pros/Cons? Thanks
