My son has decided he wants to buy a traditional muzzleloader. A man I know has a few. I looked at a CVA Hawken .50 yesterday. Seemed to be in decent shape. He said he had some more he’d need to dig out of the safe. I don’t know what kind they are yet. Is the CVA Hawken any good, and what would the twist rate normally be?

As an important side note, now my youngest son wants to find him one, so any help with that would be appreciated too. I told him we’d find him a .50 so we can share the same components. He definitely wants to go with a traditional like this one. I’d like to find him a Thompson Center with the same twist rate so he’s not limited to round ball.

I’ll be picking this rifle up from a friend of mine shortly. This’ll be my first real foray into traditional muzzleloading. I have a learning curve ahead of me. I’m used to seeing the Hawkens with the patch box and brass furniture. What little info I’ve found, including a video by Fortunecookie45LC (I think) indicates this one as being one of the Thompson Center custom shop models, which should have a 1 in 48 twist. I think for this deer season I’ll just go ahead and stick with my friend’s recipe of 100 grains of Hodgedon Select Pyrodex and a 250 grain Powerbelt bullet, just to save a little time since this load is already accurate for that rifle. He’s also already converted it over to a musket cap nipple and has gotten much better firing reliability. He’s throwing in a couple hundred musket caps and some powder, along with most of the necessary kit, all for $300, which I thought was very reasonable. I do need to know where the best place is to find musket caps, and what the best brand is. Also, even though I’ll probably use his preferred load this year, I’d like to move over to something like the Hornady Great Plains bullet and start casting my own. I just don’t know where to find a bullet mould that matches that one. I know I’ll need to be schooled up along the way, so any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

Why fer should you not post? This is your home too man I don’t know since I was having to study up on them myself but I hear the CanAm is good. Probably like anything else though, some people swear by them and some people swear at them.

As much as it pains me to do this, I’ve resigned myself to the fact that I’m going to have to do it. Wife and I have been talking lately about the fact that I really need an ATV. We can’t afford both right now so I’m going to have to trade in (or sell) my beloved Harley Heritage. I’ve never loved a machine like this, but I need a good ATV more than I need my true love at this time. There’s not only work I need to do with it, but dragging deer up out of my steep gulleys has somehow lost its charm. I’m not only looking for a real good dealership (I keep hearing Abernathy’s/I-69 Motorsports in Union City is the best), I’m looking for brand and model recommendations. I’ve actually never owned an ATV. I need a good 4x4 4 wheeler. I don’t want a side-by-side. What I need foremost is long term reliability. I’d like for this to be a one-and-done thing. What I need is a good stout 4 wheeler, a bare minimum of at least 500cc, REALLY GOOD pulling power, 4 wheel drive, good racks, and a winch. I don’t know if power steering is a must, but it’d sure be nice, and an auto transmission would be nice too. Good fuel mileage and ease of maintenance is a must too. The chinese brands are automatically out. I’ve been studying up on the Honda Foreman and Foreman Rubicon, the Yamaha Kodiak and Grizzly, the Suzuki King Quad, and the Polaris Sportsman 570 and 850. Done a smidge of study on the CanAm Outlander 570 too. Don’t know much about the Kawasaki yet but I’ll look at those. It’s going to be tough to let go of my true love, so it’s going to have to be just the right deal, and any recommendations from personal experience and/or good information sources would sure be welcome right about now.
