  1. I have never made it to this new store (S W) here in the B'oro. Have plans to do it soon as I get over this bronchitis. Mailed in my 2, $75.00 rebates to Savage this afternoon. Each rifle had one. A healthy little chunk of change coming back.
  2. If Wal Mart dries up on ammo, we will not have many sources locally. If we do it most times is much higher.
  3. We have been ordering ammo from on line sources for a while now. Most times cheaper, even with shipping, and can just order about anything you want now a days.
  4. Well, after a morning long outing we ended up purchasing 4 Rifles. The one I purchased was a Savage Axis XP bolt action in 308, and we got another for a grandson(11 Y O), a Savage Axis XP in 7MM 08. Another grandson (15) and his dad both purchased 243's. All have detachable magazines and Weaver 3x9 40 MM scopes on them. All have camo composite stocks. They are nice rifles for what they cost. Quality off assembly is fair, as two of the rifles has the scopes mounted crocked. Grandson 1 has already had his out, but not sighted in, yesterday afternoon. By the way both went hunting, yesterday afternoon, and one got a small buck also, but not with the 243 they just purchased. He said he needed to check the scope zero before he trusted the new rifle. Very Wise! We arose at 3:00 AM and was in Bass Pro parking lot by 4:30. Too our surprise, there were about 500 people already there. By the time the store opened (5:00 AM) the were about 750 people in line to get in the store. They had 110 of these rifles for sale. They were gone in 15 minutes. It took up until 11:00 AM to get all the paperwork complete and on our way home. We ended up purchasing the 4 rifles for 169.99 each. The Rifles were regularly 349.00 with a 75.00 markdown by the store. Also all of them had a 75.00 rebate from Savage. We were also able to purchase 2, 600.00 gift certificates for 540.00 each (60.00 savings), which we used to pay for the rifles before we left. That amounted to another 30.00 per rifle off. That is how we came out with he 170.00 cost + sales tax, for each of the rifles. Have plans to get them out and look them over soon. Will go sight them in and see how they shoot. All in all we had a great day, with 2 grandsons (who will never forget this day) and their fathers out for a large Black Friday shopping spree at the Bass Pro (Man's Store my granddaughter call it). Slept like a baby last night! What-A-Day! The Creedmoor's were gone in the first 5 minutes.
  5. Ended up with 2 each. Tell more later. Had a blast, but it was an all day thing(4 AM-12Noon). Got to eat our big Thanksgiving meal tonight (Friday) here at "Reed Manor". Go to families house on Thanksgiving day. Post more tomorrow.
  6. We have a house full of family, and a lot to be thankful for. Going to be a good day at Reed Manor. Happy Thanksgiving to all.
  7. Thanks for posting. Always good reading and reminder things can happen if we let our guards down and skip rules. Glad all went well in the aftermath. Had a friend who shot his foot, in his car, last year while trying to re-holster while siting in the driver seat, in front of a city business in his car with wife and family in the car with him. Things happen. Police got involved and he had big problems.
  8. Starts with 30. Probably right Garufa, but have you ever pondered going down an unknown direction? For me that would be 6.5 Creedmoor. Don't know what I will do for sure, but plan to "do", L/w if possible. Does not seem to be a large difference between the Creedmoor and 308 with a slight edge to the 308. The Creedmoor sure is getting publicity for now, although it has been out for multi digit years, fell from grace, but recently found again with gusto. Is fun to consider. My deer hunter Grandson is saying Creedmoor all out! He has killed with 270 and 06 I gave him last year. I will need to see the selection and decide then. May just come home with the old tried and true 308 or 30 06 in the Savage Axis XP flavor. Friday(29) is D day for us.
  9. I too have started downsizing. I am 71 and my health is getting worse. I want to give my guns to my grandchildren. I want to do it before I will need to run them through a nix system. Have already given away several and have several more to give. I sure have enjoyed collecting them over the last 50 years. Hard to see my babies leave, but the passage of time is saying let them go. Will keep enough to protect my sweetie and me. Kinda sad in a way.
  10. My grandson, Son In Law and I are bound for Bass Pro on Friday morning and both of us want the Savage Axis. We will see how we come out. Hope they got a bunch. I have decided on the 6.5 Creedmoor, or 308. They said they had 8 calibers in the add. Which caliber would you get if you were in the market? I am kind of a 30 06 man at heart, and this will be a stretch for me.
  11. I have my scoped Marlin bolt action 22 mag sighted in at 75 yards. I have had it for 25 years and I purchased it at Wal Mart for $139.00. I hunted varmints with it on my farm. At that distance I can shoot less than 1" groups of 5 any day of the week. Of course that is off sandbags now, because at my age with my eyes, I can not shoot as well as the rifle can off hand, any longer. Don't own a lever gun in 22 mag but do own one in 38Spl/357 Mag. It is my families favorite rifle and every thanksgiving we get it out and burn a couple hundred rounds of 38Spl. I agree with the others, if you are only shooting paper go with the 22LR. Big difference in cost. My Marlin Magnum is pretty much a safe queen now, but I would not sell it. I have a scoped Marlin mdl 60 I squirrel hunt with in 22 LR. Edited to add; I am going to purchase a Caldwell Led Sled to use while sighting in on my new shooting range. Hope to be using it for my new Savage Axis 6.5 Creedmoor. Are you listening Santa???
  12. I tend to agree with you Dave, but it is textbook on how NOT to handle oneself in an interrogation, for sure. The article the guy wrote is informative also.
  13. This is the Police interrogation of the guy in Florida that shot the man, who shoved him down at his local convince store and was just sentenced to prison. It is a somewhat long watch, but worth your time to educate yourself on how not to send yourself to prison with diarrhea of the mouth before investigators. Why trainers tell everyone what to say after a self defense act that one may be forced into. Also a good article surrounding the event. This is a good site if you want to keep it. IMO, this guy was on shaky ground, from the get go, but you decide. He sure did a lot of harm to himself by talking without a lawyer present. http://modernserviceweapons.com/
  14. I gave my bedside 357 mag to my grandson last year. I got my SW 629 out and ordered some 44 spl ammo for it (200 gr hp in several flavors. Settled on Speer G D HP). So after some practice with the 44 spl ammo it is now my new bedside gun. Lots of difference from the magnum ammo. A lot more manageable for an old Gezer. Now the 44 is not a safe queen any longer. Enjoy yours.
  15. Went to Specialty Arms yesterday. Guns were higher than the last time I was there. I guess everything continues to go up. They did have some good deals.
  16. Bernie is going to take care of all of this. Medicare for everyone, or in other words Socialized Medicine. I am sure he is going to give us this when he becomes president. The reason he can give us this, at no cost is, you will die before you can get the medical attention you need, thereby no need for money to pay for the medical care. Simple ain't it? Ah! Socialized Medical Care!
  17. I purchase ammo from S G all the time. Easy to work with and timely delivery. One must take in delivery cost because it adds to the bottom line. I purchased 9 MM practice ammo form Wal Mart cheaper than S G had it after you add the shipping. Wal Mart has had some good sales on ammo, lately, because they are closing out and not going to be selling ammo or guns in the future. Got my 9mm practice ammo for 17.00 per hundred for Winchester ammo.
  18. Specialty Arms II, in Lavergne TN, is having a Customer Appreciation Sale starting 25-27 of Nov. In the past they have had some real good prices on their guns. It is a big deal if you have never been there during one of these sales. They usually have factory reps on board and the place is really crowded. I hope to go today(Friday 22) and view the regular prices and then go back for the sale. Their prices are usually better than most places I go to even without the sale. Also just got a sales paper from Bass Pro Shop and they are having a big 5 day sale on several guns and other things. They have a Savage Axi XP rifle, in 8 calibers, at a bargain after a 75.00 mail in rebate. It is on a 6 hour only sale on 29 from 5 AM to 11AM. I don't work for either of these places. Check them out!
  19. Guess this is my lucky day. I just received a Black Friday sale paper from, Bass Pro, which has a Savage Axis X P Bolt action rifle package with a factory mounted, and bore sighted Weaver 3-9x40 rifle scope on it. It is priced, after a 75.00 rebate for 199.97. It comes in 8 calibers. Sounds interesting. Do any of you know anything about the Savage Axis X P rifles?
  20. I have fallen prey to all the hype about the old/new again 6.5 Creedmoor. Been scouring the internet about that caliber along with the 260 Remington. I will be going to my local gun store later this week. They have a Thanksgiving weekend customer appreciation day coming up on the 25 the through the 27th of November. They usually have a Ruger factory rep, among other brand reps, on hand and the Rugers are on sale at good prices(30% Off new). Going to go a couple days early so I won't need to face the crowd, and know what I am looking for before sale day. This gun store moves a lot of firearms and he has the best prices around our area. For sure on the customer appreciation sale. With all my searching I am not real sure I am not going to purchase one of the well known calibers in 308, 270 or 30 06. My Weatherby Vanguard 06 was a real good rifle, and had the best trigger I have ever felt. My grandson, who I gave it too last Christmas, has fallen in love with it. He has researched the caliber all year and has made himself very knowledgeable on the 06 caliber. His dad has a 270. I will not be shooting over 200 to 300 yards, if I ever hunt again and know those calibers will not be the flash in the paints and fade in the future. From what I have gleaned, from my searching, is the 308 and 6.5 are somewhat comparable, with a slight edge to the 308 (Maybe), and the 270 and 06 are a bit better than the 260 or 6.5, which the Creedmoor sure is the favorite flavor for now. What is your thoughts on my choices? Tell me if my analysis is wrong, and why. If you were purchasing a new rifle now, what would it be? I have expressed my thoughts.
  21. Thanks Dave.
  22. Dave, Specialty Arms in Lavergne TN. The sale last all week. Haven't been down there lately but the guns will be marked down this Friday, but the cards say sale is 25-27. Researching the 260 Savage mentioned in this thread. Appears it is almost the same as the 6.5 Creedmoor. Edited to add; Got my notice, for the sale, in the mail yesterday. Never seen a model 11 Savage but have the mdl 110.
  23. I purchased one in SS and gave it to my granddaughter last year. Good guns. Paid 300.00, in a pawn shop, for mine 5 years ago. The one I had was like new.
  24. I also have a Taurus 3" brl 22 magnum revolver. Unless you shoot Speer Short Brl ammo in it, the revolver will not burn all the powder. Standing in front of a target at 5 yards, after firing the regular 22 Mag ammo you get unburned powder residue holes in the target. The revolver shoots a lot harder than a regular 22 lr.
  25. Hozzie, I do not know anything about the 260 Remington. At $350. that is a good deal. I am not against the Savage brand, but do know a little about the Mdl 110. Thanks for the heads up, but just not interested in that caliber.
